My wife and I both had the lateral release done. She healed very quickly. It took me a little longer since my knee is bigger and more tissue had to be operated on. Of course you are ansthetics when its performed so you dont feel, but you are sore afterwards of course. Best advice...ice is your friend and dont pass up physical therapy.
May I ask you a question? How long did it take you to recover? I had this done exactly one week ago and I have lots of swelling and limited movement, my ankle and knee are both swollen and I am keeping my leg in an elevated position, can you recomend me some tricks for healing quicker? thnx
Depends on what mean by "recover". I did not go to physical therapy like I should have. It took me about 9 months to where I could actually lift, run, etc and not telll a difference. Ice is your friend and keep your elevation. Best advice I can give. No for my wife, she was up and running around in no time.
I had this done... I dislocated my knee 9 years ago...and just had surgery on it in August...took me about 3 1/2 months to recover fully from physical therapy. I don't have many problems with it as I once did...but i do have arthritis in my knees at a very young at of 17.
I'm only 19 but I have played volleyball all my life and every time I bend my knees crack like crazy and in September 2007, My first semester of college, I was dancing and fell and ended up dislocating my left knee cap, a piece of my cartilage broke off, and a few other things too..anyways had to have knee surgery on my left knee and my knee cap was all rough like yours on the underside. Knee surgery sucks especially while trying to do college and going to PT, it was a rough first semester.
I just got a lateral release on my right knee. Compared to my last surgery (repairing a severed patella on my left knee) this one has been a piece of cake. Keep working on your range of motion! Scar tissue is not your friend.
The lateral release is really not a bad surgery at all. I had my patella severed on my left knee from the right side, and the surgery to correct that was painful and the PT was really awful as well. I just got a lateral release on my right knee and so far it's a lot more bearable. Just make sure you're bending your knee and getting your range of motion back. Scar tissue is not your friend!
I am about to have my second lateral release, thanks for sharing this video....it is cool to see what they actually do. Hope the surgery turned out well for you.
btw my right knw is my stronger leg and i did a vast amount of pre op preperations
i did alot of muscle work before hand and i feel this might benafit me in the long run as i didnt prepare for my first operation and my quad muscle deterioated to the point of nothing and i have nerve damage causeing my thigh to be totaly numb and no signs of it coming back as its been like that since 4 weeks post op
on the whole i do feel good improvments in terms of movment of my knee :)
I had a lateral release done in 2000 and made complete recovery. You absolutely have to work your ass off in physical therapy. It took me approx. 14 weeks to be able to train hard again. Make sure you work hard and you'll be fine. It will take longer to mentally heal from the surgery than to physically heal from it. Expect lots of swelling and a few drains of the knee. No biggie, keep focused on PT and you'll be set. Good luck!!
I had a lateral release done in April of 2000 and am pleased with the results. I was running and training hard in approx 14 weeks with a complete recovery in approx 6mos. I say complete, because after any knee surgery it takes longer to heal mentally than physically. I can't stress PT enough. I have had three surgeries and my PT work ethic was key to recovery. If you are lazy you'll pay for it down the road. Work hard and you'll be glad you did. Good luck. I hear ya on the sports. lol.
I'm having one done tomorrow and am hoping to be able to do clinical for nursing school by October. Keeping my fingers crossed cuz I have to be on my feet for 8 hours a day.
I just had a lateral release done on my right knee a week ago. I started PT this week .. totally sucks. How long did it take you to heal? My PT and Dr. said it takes 2-3 weeks for swelling to noticeably diminish .. are you happy with the results? I need my left knee done .. but am waiting to see how the right turns out :) Sports .. gotta love 'em.
i had my left knee done almost 1 year ago but some complications in the nerve has cause some problems in recovery
i just had my right knee done 4 days ago and its been a totaly difrent experience
athough the knee looks worse than the last time it actualy feels much better
they left one of the arthoscope wounds open and closed the rest with stitches but i feel the swelling and pain is very difrent from last so i imagine if you get the other one done it will feel difrent
Yes it was very painful. Keep the ice on constantly and keep your weight off of it. I had mine done on May 27 of this year and I would say up until the end of September I was still a little "handicapped" for a lack of better words. It works though, but you gotta do physical therapy.
