  • Of course, he was often known as "Wally Weller" because he wasn't as collected or as honest as he wanted to make out. The Jam may have been a great band who composed some classic material, but it riles me when a Middle Class teenager rants on about steretypical privileges and pretends to be on the side of the "dispossessed" even when he's got an absolute fortune. His fans seem to include a lot of inarticulate individuals - which when you think about it, isn't too flattering.

  • @PaulT1967 and yet, ironically, you've just stereotyped everyone who listens to The Jam! Hmmm....

  • love ricks t shirt

  • what a load of bollocks it is we all talk/sing sometimes.

i am sure weller would agree.

  • Decent of them to sing about public schoolboys i say - it shows they're open minded and not biased. Well done Jam, and a good song to boot!

  • I love this song, David Cameron thought it was praise to Eton, but it was the exact opposite, just goes to show how stupid the people running our country are...

  • the singer stalks my nans best mate :L

  • Think Weller looks a bit like the guitarist from Dr Feelgood, a few times when he steps back from the microphone - that sort of robotic thing. Never seen any similarity before...

  • great music and probly never to see a band like this again, if we are to get good music again e need to get computers out of the band as i fear this is why music is and has been utter rubbish for the last 20 od years wiht the od acception now and again.

  • @hugodogish Same man I'm 18, been listening to Weller since I was 15, seen him twice, guy's my fucking idol, songs he wrote with The Jam are still so relevant today and the agression and punk attitude are too.

  • The FUNKY BASS M8!!!!! O_O

  • The drummer is wearing a Herbie´s t-shirt.

  • @TheFrankjohnsonmusic you fuckin dichead!!

  • Presenter wearing FALL t-shirt. Those were the days, eh?

  • I can not belive how great this(Paul Weller) three piece band sound!, I bet all and sundry, this year's x -craptor shite does not emerge with anyone anywhere near 1% of the talent of these three?

  • @lujas10 The Jam were a killer band and we need a new killer band today to put the excitement, raw and energetic force back in to music which we so desperately need but i doubt that we will get it in the form of Simon Cowell's crappy, commercialised corporate X Factor bullshit which is sadly being drummed in to todays youngsters, we need to create a new scene to make music important again or else face a music industry with very little future.

  • Goh, I'm old but I was -1 when they recorded this. I've been waiting all this time for this kind of awesomeness to reappear...

  • @techyourself Dude, I was 9, so if you're old, I'm ancient! :-)

  • "well, what do you think of the show so far?"......pretty good.

  • Who's the presentrix at the beginning?

  • I love the jam, I fucking hate Thatcher and now the English coz I am in exile from that fucked up cunt tree.

  • @paulcancheng61 What the heck did you do to get exiled? Let us know so we can try to exile our MPs :)

  • Dame Thatcher also sent a task force to sqaush an uprising halfway round the world which most Englishmen was fan fuckin tastic. P.S. one of these sent their Sons to Eton college? Hows about that that then guys and gals, to qoute Sir Jimmy Saville??????

  • @colonelofcork I'm of Irish/Scottish descent and I thought it was 'fan fucking tastic', so much so I joined the Army when I came of age 2 years later. NI? One fucked up place which I wish we could hand over to the Argies.

  • thatcher also had 'pergonophobia' i think its spelt, anyway its the fear of beards and men who choose to wear them

  • They pulled this off amazingly without the keyboards......Weller's solo is spot on

  • The Smiths rightly hated everything about Margaret Thatcher who was a nazi fascist man-hating sow.

  • @mrcarpetride YEAH WHAT A BITCH SHE SHOULD GO DIE IN A HOLE SOMEWHERE IN SIBERIA!!

  • It's "ETON" Rifles, people. As in the place ETON. Honestly.

  • @TheLambCannon Yes.. We know.. Not Eaton mate ;)

  • @TheLambCannon

    True story :)

  • @TheLambCannon Well done it's a simple mistake due to pronunciation, feel smart now. honestly.

  • @TheLambCannon Down near Slough

  • @TheLambCannon no its eating rifles

  • @bensimps123 And all this time I thought it was "see through lightbulbs" :D

  • @Mcfinbar :oD

  • @TheLambCannon Nah it's about explosive flatulence and is called "Eaten Rifles"

  • Why on earth would someone click "dislike" for a MASTERPIECE like this?

  • This song explains collage kids perfectly. I love The Jam, and Weller always wrote meaningful songs, weather people knew the meaning or not.

  • 44 people already have the plauge.

  • <3

  • Comment removed

  • Bruce Foxton sent his son to Eton (no, really).

Weller sent his son to private school so that his son wouldn't "grow up talking like Ali G." I feel cheated.

  • @aerialkate Well, the English created English so it wouldn't do to let language slip into the tip with the rest of modern life. I'm with Weller on this one.

  • Cheer up Americans, things are looking up.

Children have finished looting new street & its safe to leave the house. I love Brum, I hate the scum trashing my city AND I LOVE THE JAM.

  • If only britain was political

You dont realise this is the biggest depresion the world will ever see.

  • the best

  • class music with a true meaning pul weller is a genius

  • Does it matter? Politics is for little turds with a need to control others...spineless, ignorant, fearful cunts the lot of them. Marx was twat, lenin a terrorist cult leader. I wont bother mentioning all the drug abusing sociopaths, psychopaths, degenerats and then there is that worderful socialist/communist(bullshit) stalin who was NOT a communist. Naw...fuck politics and all the cunts that think it matters. Haven't met one worth the trouble of saving.

  • amazing what aband. megamorg123

  • I want Ricks T-Shirt!

  • What a pile of nonsense.

  • Should be "Eton Rifles" as in the school.

  • i wonder how many millions he's got in the bank...yank....fucking champagne socialist.and dont get me started on saint bob geldoff.....y'have to give....right.why didn't he lead by example.........hypocrite.

  • simply couldnt of grown up with a better group through my teens

  • This is one of the best performances by any band I've seen on YT.

  • i loved the jam. was at secondary school when they were at their peak. remember my dad god bless him saying to me one night when this was on top of the pops, here son what is he saying, eat your trifle. pissed me off at the time but can sort of understand y he thought that. rip dad still miss u x

  • Eton Rifles

  • I enjoyed this song so much when I was young, that now, I can't even listen to it. Ya know what I mean?

  • The primary difference between communism and socialism is that under communism the people are treated like cattle, penned up and slaughtered, while under socialism they are merely treated like lapdogs, and are fed and sheltered but kept leashed. No thanks.

  • they told it as they saw it, nothing wrong with that!

  • Must have been the same show that Joy Division played on with that unknown pleasures artwork in the backdrop. Youtube can be so awesome!

  • most sensible thing said in a while!!!

  • Fucks sake all you toenails arguing about politics make me wanna puke! Just enjoy the song or dont listen to it.

    FUCK!!!

  • @zoolander2485 thats the most sensible thing said for a long time - well done mate!

  • AWSOME I <3 THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!

  • Joy Division were also on this programme-what a great time to be 18.

    Two legends on one show.

  • Great group absolute legends, they pitched it just soooooo right.........then Wella climbed up his own arse and split the group....what a cock!

  • At the time, The Jam were v. different to other punk bands, but played at the same venues. The Red Cow pub in Hammersmith was my favourite. Other bands were often openly nihilistic. The Jam, lead by Weller, were a touch more cerebral.

That didn't stop us fans having massive rucks with Teds from the Paladium at Hammersmith Broadway tube station. An amazing time to be a teen in London.

  • I might run the risk of pissing of The Jam diehards on here but i got into The Jam when i was about 17/18 then by about 22/23 id become a bit blase about them. Im 27 now and heard Going Underground on the radio today and i thought fuckin hell im gonna have to get back into them. Clicked on this just now and fuck me they were some band. Gonna have to dig out All Mod Cons and Setting Sons now.

  • @antfoley1983 sound affects is my favorite and the one that has aged well!

  • what a catalyst you turned out to be

  • I will look forward to your answer @iVideoiTube as no one here has decided to debate with you. I'm giving you a chance to say your side rather than being shouted down though I do not agree with you in the slightest. How civilised of me lol.

  • @iVideoiTube Ok I'll bite and have a serious discussion with you then. Firstly, your inability to distinguish the difference between a socialist and a communist only shows a staggering amount of ignorance on your part. Secondly on the subject of our health service I have to say that I do not understand what you think the problem with the NHS is. In this country we believe that everyone has a RIGHT to healthcare. A society that looks after the needs of both the rich and the poor is not civilised?

  • @CrazySpaniard101

How pompous! The difference is that a Socialist is born into the middle class and thinks that fairplay is a jolly good idea old boy. A lasting communist is forged by living, seeing, and understanding.

  • @ejohnh sorry but I don't understand what your saying lol if your saying that all Socialists are middle class, I consider myself to have pretty socialist views but am working class. And I'm sorry but I don't mean to be pompous. There is a big difference between a socialist and a communist and I DO hate it when people (and no offence to anyone but it's usually americans) call socialists "communist" as if its some kind of insult.

  • @CrazySpaniard101 I personally don't see anything wrong with being a communist. However, the absolute power required for it to 'succeed' inevitably corrupts the ideal. To me, Socialism takes the 'fairness' of the communist ideal and marries it to the modern day version of democracy. I personally know US citizens who have had anti-communism drilled into them since kindergarten. It's no wonder that they do have this knee jerk reaction to any liberal/leftist views.

  • @ejohnh thats exactly what I think. I hate the way that people use "communist" as an insult when it is a perfectly valid political belief. The only down side about communism is, as you said, it relies upon the person in charge to be absaloutely uncorruptable (if thats even a word)

  • @ejohnh Anyone who managed to survive the Ukrianian Terror-Famine of 1932-33 would no doubt take issue with your rosy portrayal of wonderful socialism.

  • @Hellcat2800 You obviously haven't read it correctly mate. You are alluding to the totalitarian communist regime under Stalin. That was just called socialism.

  • @ejohnh I did read it, in fact I've read several books on the subject, my U.K. friend. Stalin and his cronies repeatedly justified their acts in the 30's citing the SOCIALIST writings of Marx. I've read Marx and Engels and the seeds of genocide are right there in their works.I cannot see Communism or Socialism in any other light than which the originators of these THEORIES cast them in.

  • @Hellcat2800 I copied this : The Bolsheviks began with the plan of implementing a form of Marxism in Russia but it soon became so corrupt that it didn't really resemble Marx's ideas at all. People in the USSR were not really used to self-rule. So one group of greedy dictatorial bandits replaced another. Stalin was almost as bad as Hitler.

  • @ejohnh Hear hear! I agree entirely with you, and ruffled many feathers by saying it in the 1980s. Hitler went so far to the right, and Stalin so far to the left, that they actually met each other round the back. It's called megalomania.

  • @Hellcat2800 "I cannot see Communism or Socialism in any other light than which the originators of these THEORIES cast them in." Where did Marx advocate genocide?

  • monster song, but... the title of the song is actually, 'The Eton Rifles' mate.

  • @ConnorPregowski Eton are the Taiwanese makers of gay as hell scooters, nothing like the real deal Vespa GTS 300 I ride...No way would Weller endorse an Eton. He may as well endorse all the Viet-Bodges on Ebay.

  • Paul weller trying as he might did'nt get any feedback from his amp at the end!

  • fags are a bundle of sticks use for starting fires......

  • Eat trifle!

  • 43 people are deaf twats!!!

  • The Jam, The Clash and The Smiths - Best politically motivated bands?

  • @Westy91 dont forget the who

  • @Westy91 U2 perhaps?

  • @Westy91 What politics motivated the Smiths?

  • @shawndimery personal politics- antiwar- vegetarian advocacy- sexuality- doesnt matter the jam own the smiths and everyone else

  • @shawndimery The politics of being Miserable cunts.

  • @Westy91 The Jam just sang about the times they lived in. The Smiths were all about the emotions and day to day of a lower class man. The politics were a background atmosphere for their songs. They wrote no anthems of solidarity, or pleas for change. Good bands, yes. Best political music of all time: no. Sorry, 'Amazing' bands.

  • Some potential candidates for that title:

Angelic Upstarts, Stiff Little Fingers, Dead Kennedys & Jello Biafra, Bob Dylan/Marley

  • @mikeypox Being political does not mean directly talking about individual political parties, it can be about raising the issue of social problems and other activism. The Smiths protest at the meat industry as illustrated by 'Meat Is Murder' and the obvious anti monarchy of 'The Queen is Dead' show obvious political arguments. Morrissey also spoke of politics in various interviews in particular his hatred of Margaret Thatcher. His solo work has continued to be politically motivated too

  • @Westy91 I agree with you but I wouldn't call a band who have a couple political songs, a political band. A lot of artists, most of the good ones, include their politics in their work. To me, they aren't all political bands, just bands with politics. I could spend more time solidifying my argument here, but I don't really want to get into one. Just saying my opinion.

  • @Westy91 Throw in early Manic Street Preachers and Rage Against The Machine and you're spot on..

  • @Westy91 well im not really into the smiths, but i know that they are not that political. can u tell me about some political songs by them?

  • @6mbl Morrisseys anti thatcherism is well documented and his obvious repulsion of monarchy and the meat industry. As someone pointed out he tended to write more from a personal view than social commentary although their are a lot of social observations in The Smiths lyrics. I can't be arsed writing anymore, just go and listen to them

  • @Westy91 Hey Westy, if you like those groups, have a look at The Specials

  • @cmst69 I love The Specials!

  • @Westy91 Me too!

  • @Westy91 Were The Smiths really politicly motivated? I mean I love The Smiths but I really don't see the politics

  • @carumbasra I can't be arsed answering you.

  • @Westy91 Was that honestly, that stupid? Because, I really don't see Morrissey as political in any sort of conventional way, I don't think The Smiths had a left agenda in the same way as the Jam did with Red Wedge and all of that. I mean I might be wrong but I'm just interested to know where you're coming from.

  • @carumbasra cunt

  • @Westy91 I wouldn't call the Smiths a politically motivated band. Morrissey just complains about everything, some of which may happen to regard politics.

  • you obviously don't know the Smiths very well if you don't know that the Smiths are most definitely not a politically motivated band. I would say the Smiths/Morrissey gives a voice to all the lonely people out there who do have serious issues with shyness etc.

Obviously you’re just another typical Jack the lad so you would just laugh at that statement, but I don't really care.

  • @Westy91 all class bands

  • @Westy91

Don't forget Britain's National Anthem, Ghost Town by The Specials.

  • @whogivesamonkeysfuck Britain has a national anthem...and it's NOT "Ghost Town"!

  • @Westy91 and the pistols!

  • @Westy91 The Sex Pistols

  • @Westy91 stiff little fingers

  • hey all. i'm a lefty yank historian who loves the jam and totally identifies with their empathetic social democratic ethos. please ignore my dumbass paranoid conservative countryman. those of us over here who actually get history and politics know what's up and know where the jam stand among things. my favorite band hands down.

  • @zacharylutz5 plank

  • Comment removed

  • @zacharylutz5 lover of libertarian principles who because-of/despite-of that fact, love the Jam. Saw them @ the Palladiium in NYC 1980 and Glen Cove LIE 1983. Have turned on many, many friends to this amazing, amazing band (politics aside)

  • @zacharylutz5

"totally identifies with their empathetic social democratic ethos"

If you're so lefty, why are you such a pretentious twat?

  • @zacharylutz5 This song is about the hypocritical element in the left and the horrible nature of a the class system. It attacks both.

  • @zacharylutz5 NICE COMMENT MATE.AND HANDS ACROSS THE OCEAN,BE SAFE hasta la victoria siempre

  • @zacharylutz5 Agree.

  • @zacharylutz5 IOW you understand that socialism is a failure, communisim WAS and always will fail utterly. That obversly facism is just as big a crock. Socilaized health care is insupportable for more than two generations. That adding zeros never solves a thing. That until Ethics and Morals and made hard sciences with as much suport as high energy physics the world will continue to be the shit hole that socialist of all stripes and greedy cunts (mustn't forget them) have made it?

  • @zacharylutz5 One Yank to another: Agree sooooo much!

  • @zacharylutz5 why not just enjoy the music do yanks always have to categorize and analyze everything

  • Excellent. My thoughts exactly. I am always telling my friend to do so.

  • @zacharylutz5

America has lost its tripple AAA status today

2008 Donald Trump said that the world is entering the biggest deppesion ever. It will make the 1930,s look like a walk in the park.

    Bad times ahead me thinks

  • @deadrebel2 thanks for that mate.

  • @zacharylutz5

    american apologists... classic

  • @zacharylutz5 from what i can gather he's not a fan of the PRICK who's running our country...that is a FACT!...NEITHER IS MORRISSEY OR JOHNNY MARR....

  • @zacharylutz5 This is a song about the hypocrisy of the left and the evil of the right. Basically it attacks both sides Labour and Conservatives. True to character the left think it is merely an attack on the class system and the tories, when he is attacking both.

  • great ,,,luv foxton,,,amazing

  • *Eton
