@gibsonpaul0 Is it? Is that funny? Shit mate I must have missed something. All bells have ends. You yourself however have been as progressive as the great Scott himself and personally reached in your own right the status of the ultimate bellend. Well done. LMFAOAU.
@DannyMadFerIt A little wide of the mark. The band was lets be honest shite, maybe apart from Power. Mavers could have graced any outfit however, truly great as he was.
@bigbeef30 mate if you think the members of the la's mavers n power excepted, were shite musicians thats just ridiculous, some brilliant musicians played in the la's, power was the least accomplished of the lot
@FeNsTa Too true. Shame I got into the club scene and not the bands that were under my nose. Saying that the club scene in Liverpool was just about the best in the land also at that time with some of the most diverse club music all within yards of each other. Stems from the beatles maybe....?
The La's ffs what an album - I used to wear the drum logo t-shirt for pe in about 1990. Lee Mavers was one of the best writers / singers Britain ever produced - and a massively over looked guitar player - the album is nearly all him. He burned out but he burned so fucking bright.
amazing to see the LAS again after all these years still doing it for me>>>>big shout to the HUYTON posse who introduced me to this band......TONY DAVIES, JIMMY JACKO BIGCAMMY AND JOHN SHARPE................not forgotten LA ............FAE SAMBO LA.......
I love the tuning of the drums and bass. superb. I had a look at this to see if I could learn to play "son of a gun" on guitar. (!!!) wow. I woudn't want to butcher it!
Liverpool needs to bottle their tap water and sell it to the kids making music these days. It would save the world, or at least give it a shot of timeless, well written pop music.
oasis are a great band who captured the culture, fashion, and feeling of the time. they make good songs but in no way have they ever made a song as perfect as there she goes? noels debut album was an amazing piece of work but if you take them song by song would you swap ciggarettes and alcohol for liberty ship? or live forever for there she goes? or married with children for son of a gun etc etc? live forever might make the grade as an album track but as debut albums go the la's are the best.
a genius by defenition is inevitably floored! this guy is a genius! there is no question but what he see's as his morals and principals about the first album release are infact getting in the way of releasing an album that has 20 years of built up songs to go on it! if i won the lottory tomorrow i would pay for all the studio time this guy needed until he did get it right, if his first album in his mind was bad then i would love to hear one he thinks is ok :-)
The tin can alley that ensues behind this is just woeful. The vocals however are utterly sublime. Lee was ahead of the band, ahead of time and unfortunately ahead of himself. Oasis fed off his demise. You never got the credit you deserved.....
At 43 years of age.... this is also my fave album ever. My 8 year old daughter loves it and I have never pushed it on her. It seems that beauty and genius will out....
Lee what the hell are you doing now? why aren't you bigger than jesus, the beatles, satan, sky tv,rosanne barr and many other things i can't think of right now???? the most perfect pop tune ever recorded earns you a pitance compared to what you should have in the bank!!! i love oasis but please come back and show them how it should have been done!!!!

@bigbeef30 I absolutely agree, Mavers voice has that angelic, yet almost harsh and raw tone very similar to Lennon, Brian Wilson etc and easily just as good.. I remember seeing this clip at the time and feeling the excitement that I'd just witnessed the birth of a band on TV that were going to be as big as The Beatles. Sadly it was never to be.
@panfart Definately, the way his life panned out you could say he missed out. The truth is we all missed out on what could have been great. He still left us with some memorable tracks though....
I have just discovered this band tonight. My God! They should have been a super band. The Knack? Gimme a break. This is the fifth song of the night. I can listen to this band all night long. The La's were a great - and I don't use that word often - band.
im 50+ hav heard 1000s of rocknroll albums/records/discs (same prolly like millions others) the las album is my favorite of all time i think it is almost a perfect serendipity coincidental once in a lifetime creation lilywhite's production mavers' compositions even his 'hating it' only makes it more beautiful i consider it on par w/ van gogh's self portrait or a once in a lifetime sunset baby's first smile
Never a truer word spoken! only few people have the ability mavers had/has and i think it's such a shame he doesn't let the main stream in any more?
the la's i feel would have been as talked about as the beatles by now if he had got his head down and carried on! £15000 every three months for there she goes doesn't seem that much money to me for a guy who has the tallent this bloke has!!!
Thanks for puting this up, brilliant performances of two songs from what i consider to be one of the best albums ever recorded. This band could have went on to give the world so much amazing music, wasted talent.
noel gallagher's got a studio, why dosent he give lee the keys and and let him do what he wants.noel owes his career to him so its the least he could do!

(at the time it was written!) he is one guy that could have stood against lennon and Mc cartney at their peak........ magic stuff
The Beatles comparison is equally over used. EVERYONE was bigger than at some point.... or could've been bigger than the Beatles. I'm sick of the Beatles, but i'm not going to deny that they are absolutely untouchable. Do The La's a favore and stop calling Mavers a genious to rival John Lennon,Paul McCartny, or George Harrison. If you wanna say he's as good or better than Ringo i will have to say....maybe. The La's were simply a great band in their own right and not to be compared to any others.
no one has ever been bigger than the beatles? that is a fact! (bands, not michael jackson etc) the beatles comparison is something that is always going to be touted about! the reason! they are the benchmark! a level everyone aspires to! there is no getting away from mavers ability to write songs that are "inspired" by the beatles! my comments are ment to pay tribute!
also, better than ringo, maybe? that is a joke isn't it? no if's and's or butt's! thats not even a question!!!
i fully agree wi you..there's so many band's worthy of comparisons of bands like the beatles..why does nobody ever say 'they were as good as the stones,or the who,or the stone roses....and why are the small faces never included in these roll call of great bands?i absolutely love the la's,and probably own the majority of their stuff...they're all good, and for different reasons, but i think people naturally tend to say that so an so are/were the best groupever, but isn't that the beauty of it?
@Ruth, deffo agreed at the small faces mention, kinks, and Ocean Colour Scene are the greatest band ever...
But thats beside the point. And exactly the point. Music is personal taste, not some platonic thing you can rate and put in order. If you like it, listen. If not, dont. Its as simple as that.
Keep the faith :D
Its just a shame the greats (lee mathers, ian brown, even liam) dont have the same voices they once did. It stops my generation (im 17) gettin into it often.
im from cardiff and these were the best of them all better than the stone roses and the happy mondays put together!! their album is the dogs i know every word
the song is about injecting heroin, however he disguised it, so it could be interpreted as a being about a girl, probably to make money off it and get it in the charts!!
Breaks my heart to see this and wonder of what could have been. How many more great albums could we've had? How many more Timeless Melodies? A beautiful shame.
They're strikingly different as a group...very home-made feel to all the stuff and clearly into it for the sheer thrill of what creating music can bring. The album is great but it's a shame Mavers never reckoned much to it.
the nature of genius and true beauty cannot be traced or captured in the realm of the real. make what you will of the nature of drug addiction but it is the human condition of which mavers sings. i love this song.
For one of my favourite bands I've only ever listened to the album a few times, I think it's weak, check out the live BBc album and the live stuff on youtube instead
great pure performance, even my 5 year old daighter loves this performance, she sings along to both tracks and has even learned to type son of a gun into youtube lol
i gotta disagree with the posts below. i think this is my favorite la's performance on tape! there's a real authenticity to these acoustic versions and his voice sounds fucking beautiful.
Fantastic, fantastic band with a perfect romatic 60's vibe to them. To me The LAs are like a beautiful girl you met and fell in love with on a summers night, who disappeared never to be seen again, only to live on in your memory as a perfect daydream of what could have been. I really, truly love this band.

no its about a girl
girls are druggy!!1
eselaufzweibeinen 3 years ago
the song is about injecting heroin, however he disguised it, so it could be interpreted as a being about a girl, probably to make money off it and get it in the charts!!

Breaks my heart to see this and wonder of what could have been. How many more great albums could we've had? How many more Timeless Melodies? A beautiful shame.

@GMOZOH I have feeling Mavers and Power won't read these posts so..

They're strikingly different as a group...very home-made feel to all the stuff and clearly into it for the sheer thrill of what creating music can bring. The album is great but it's a shame Mavers never reckoned much to it.

Drugs ruined Mavers. I care a lot and wished he never touched them.

Mavers is a fucking genius.

the nature of genius and true beauty cannot be traced or captured in the realm of the real. make what you will of the nature of drug addiction but it is the human condition of which mavers sings. i love this song.

love the la's hate there she goes!

Only a professional could make the personification of heroin addiction sound upbeat.
The La's need to do some shows, AT LEAST in Liverpool.

For one of my favourite bands I've only ever listened to the album a few times, I think it's weak, check out the live BBc album and the live stuff on youtube instead

Absolutely sweet performance from one of the best british bands of the 20th century, if only lee mavers played the game eh??????

great pure performance, even my 5 year old daighter loves this performance, she sings along to both tracks and has even learned to type son of a gun into youtube lol

i gotta disagree with the posts below. i think this is my favorite la's performance on tape! there's a real authenticity to these acoustic versions and his voice sounds fucking beautiful.
