a ghastly tragedy. about a narcissistic middle aged man who won't deal with his shallowness, or his getting older or his now gone relationships with daughter and wife. he gives way to a delusion that he can recapture the pleasant past and stay there merely by swimming a series of backyard pools it all comes to an horrible end.
A unique & classical masterpiece overlooked by so many critics, this is Lancaster digging so deep into his vast repertoire of talent which selects him out from so many actors & puts him up there with other greats, I just love looking at this film over & over,.
love it!

I thought the original Cheever story was better...eerie, haunting, a bit sad and downright creepy at the end.

One of my favorites from this period, along with Seconds, with Rock Hudson...! and The 10th Victim...a great romp....
Also before this 60's period...The Big Knife...with Jack Palance, Ida Lupino and Rod Steiger...
then there's Mickey One, with Warren Beatty, by Arthur Penn, with the greatest score I ever heard with Stan Getz and Eddie Sauter...(On CD now)

Janice Rune ruled. Very intimidating gal...her intelligence was all over the place.

Very moving and unjustly neglected film, and one of Lancaster's best performances.
