This worked GREAT. I was hesitant since I wouldn't want to tear up my wife's beloved car. Had no problem and I'm no electician. $9 for a narrow point soldering iron and some patience getting the face plate out - the tabs held it in tight so I had to pry a little and pull harder than I was comfortable with, but it just snapped out. I spent more time getting the face off than the entire rest of the project. THANKS!
Under magnification the solder joints of these resistors looked solid and fine. These resistors are much bigger than most electronic components and therefore lot of solders. Also, all the solders on all the components have a glue coating for increased reliability. So, don't think adding extra solder helps. The heat during the soldering process might be helpful.
The issue could be the cable plug as well. Just unplugging and plugging it back maybe enough.
Thank you very much by doing the extra mile by showing us how to fix the clock in my 2005 Corolla. I followed all your instructions and my clock works great. Thank you for sharing something few would do! THANK YOU!
Thank you so much for this info!!! It did help in my case too! I wounder, so many people had exactly the same issue and Toyota did not make any recall for fixing that. Toyota, you suck!
Just finished trying this on my 2003 Corolla and now it works perfectly. Thank you so much for posting the video. Appreciated it so much I signed up just to post a comment for the first time.
I tried this to a 2005 Corolla and it works great now. Very easy to remove. But watch the little accessory door below the clock since it seems really fragile. I'm not sure, but i may have broken the hinge on it. Clock works great though.THANKS!
I am an electronic tech that owns a 2005 Matrix. This looks like a great fix, mine just started acting up a couple of days ago. Will report back after I solder the chips.
Cool! Thank you! In my case it was the "270" chip. I just touched it with the screw driver and the clock came on again. Soldered it and tada... fixed!
Thanks for posting this how to video. My friend's clock on her 2003 Corolla is not working. I will use your video to repair it. Her car is an automatic. Also, the light bulb for the gear shifter is not working on her car. Might be just a burned out bulb. I was wondering if I take off the gear shifter panel off, would I be able to see the light bulb or some other parts need to be taken off? Thanks.
Very helpful! My Corolla is an automatic, so removing the panel involved removing two screws on the lower portion. But soldering was the same. The clock now works perfectly..... Thanks for posting this YouTube presentation!
My 2005 Toyota Matrix XRS has a different clock, but the procedure you demonstrated set me on the right path to fixing it anyway. On close inspection, with a magnifying glass, I was able to locate two weak solder joints and was able to "touch them up with a little more solder. Thanks for the great helps.
I love Toyota, but stuff like this from any companies should be on a recall or warranty. I can understand with cars made 15-20yrs ago, but these model are still fairly new. :(
Thanks so much. I just fixed my 2005 Toyota Matrix clock. There were 10 chips in my clock but it was very similar to yours. I re-sodered one 270 chip, one 510 chip, two 102 chips, and six 910 chips and now the clock is very bright again.
To get the 2 Torx screws out just use a really small slot screwdriver, insert it into the Trox head and turn.
Thanks worked perfectly saved me a trip to the dealership! All I did was touch the pieces with my sodering iron didn't even add any new soder! Btw I have a 2003 corolla.
Mine was fading in & out and it finally went completely out. I was also quoted $300+ for repair. That's ridiculous for just a clock!!
Anyway, I didn't have any rosin, so I just touched the solder points with the iron and it worked fine. If it goes out again, I guess I go buy some rosin.
Sam, TY so much! Mine just starting having this issue a few months back. I asked the dealership and they said it would cost like $360 dollars to fix. This sort of thing should be in a recall.
Sam, you are my hero! I have had this annoyingly intermittent problem for some time now. I even drove around with the clock hanging out so I could isolate the area where the bad connection was. After re-soldering 2 of the 5 components, I decided to do a search to see if anyone else had this problem. Your video confirmed that I was on the right track so I re-soldered the other 3 components you mentioned. I took it for a long test drive on a bumpy road and it seems to be fine. Thank you!
Thank you so much. It worked perfectly on my 04 Corolla.

Fantastic! Many thanks! It works very well for Matrix 2005. I re-heat one big R 270, some smallers Rx (R stands for resistance in this board?)

on 03-06 Matrix clock housing is held on by 2 small screws (hex) - how do you manage to remove these?
malelee21 1 year ago
@malelee21 You need a #8 Torx screwdriver. If you want to remove the housing, look at this video youtube.com/watch?v=paYVr4TUP20
