Releasing them at a distance from their original home turf is about as much of a death sentence as simply killing them offhand. Other rodents tend to not like "newcomers" to their territory very much and won't hesitate to fight to the death if they think they stand a chance. Injured as he would've been from the trap, he wouldn't have been able to defend himself nearly so well & likely would've ended up torn to shreds alive. So you did the kinder thing by killing it.
