Even in our culture, the main line of conflict in life is men vs women. When I was in school in US, men and women liked each other after years of conventional housewife roles. I have watched this degrade for 30 years into britney hijinks, starving actresses, sex slavery widespread. you answered the question yourself, its the culture of the people that has intertwined with the religion. And hardly any Arab practices this, its mostly Kurds (my own culture) and Pakistani's who have an ancient cultural practice of honor killings, it has nothing to do with Islam. Its wrong and backwards no doubt, but dont go pointing fingers and religion. Infact, Islam grants women the most rights, you might find that funny but its a fact. Culture is the problem my friend.
