Dis ya right. All DJs in Jamaica are always vocally flat by at least a half note. Very traditional style that dates back 200 years. All is driven off the back beat.......
You know the score.........Up until the wee small hours partying, it's 6.00am and the suns coming up, bodies, fag butts, and bottles of booze litter the floor and furniture, in the corner the record player long expired, crawl to the french doors and fling them open on a summer day about to start, quietly skin up, go over to the record player and put this track on, quietly at first, then as others begin to rouse, turn up the volume, nod head................what a start to another beautiful day !
I know that much. The guitar rhythm on the backbeat is swung but he is shaking on the backbeat in straight time. They sound wrong on top of each other. I think that the maracas were maybe just put too high in the mix... Good song though!
@Makbelly It's not technical, it's technique. Technique is relative to the individual. If this track makes you unhappy...don't listen to it. Personally, this performance blows my mind! If you need polished perfection, get into classical music, reggae may not be your bag, baby.
@houseofreggae No he's not. Imagine someone is playing in 4/4. Standard eighth notes would split the beat into two even halfs. To swing the note, generally people are taught to imagine the 4/4 meter in 12/8 (or divide each quarter of the 4/4 into triplets). Then instead of playing two even eighths, you would play a quarter then an eighth (assuming you split up your quarter notes or changed meters). Long short.
The pattern that the shaker is doing a eighth then a quarter note AKA not swung.

Nice fat bassline! Awesome tune! What the hell is the guy with the shakers doing though? He's out of time for pretty much all of the song.

Thanks for the great comment. He's playing the maracas in a "swing time" fashion timed on the backbeat.

Wow, Nice that he's so technical with the "swing time" tempo beat , but quite frankly its just ruining the song for us.
