...and this is the poster boy for telling kids what drugs will do to them...damn with jazz players who thought they had to do drugs to be cool and productive...
@lalbruiz get off that crap dude,,,drugs are and will always be apart of society,,,,like or not...and don't lump Mr. Chet Baker in with that sad crowd....he was so very much more than that....just listen dude.....

Candy I call my sugar candy, because I'm sweet on candy candy is sweet on me. She understands me, my understanding candy and candy is always handy when I need sympathy. I wish that there were four of her, so I could love much more of her. She has taken my complete heart, God is sweet too for my sweet heart candy. It's gonna be just tandem the day I take my candy and make her mine, oh mine.
I do think he is "raw" but not my style. He is a fantastic trumpet player but i was never into his voice. I mean damn it was smooth. But to monotone and not personal. He sounded like some druggie in this vid.....
Chet had to learn to play, then got his teeth knocked out & had to learn to play again w/no teeth. He got a full set of dentures and had to learn to play yet again w/those. His habit got worse and all the while & thru it all , he got better.
I personally think Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, Chet Baker were the top 3 best jazz trumpet players-improvisers music makers followed close by Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Roy Eldridge.
@xatzidakis - You're right about Chet vs Gillespie but vs Miles & (for me personally) Clifford Brown I'm not so sure. But this I do know for sure - Gillespie's solos on 'Tour de Force - The Trumpets of Roy Eldridge Dizzy Gillespie Harry Edison' (esp on 'Steeplechase' )are indeed 'uncompareable'. 'Steeplechase' is simply amazing. For 17 minutes Eldridge, Edison & Gillespie take turns amazing & astounding! Backed by the 'uncompareable' rhythm section of Peterson Ellis Brown & Rich! Dizzy lives!
Fantastic. Thank you so much. I had only heard this song done as a big band type tyoe ballad.
Candy can be slang for several drugs used, either seperately or combination. When I see this vid, it certainly seems to me that Chet is singing about drus, not women, Doesn't matter.
Historically, great art has, more often than not, been produced under terrible circumstances by people with lots of problems. Fortunately, the art lives on long after the artist has died.
Chet Baker is the farthest thing from a wannabe. He had one of the most honest voices and played trumpet with delicate rawness that may never be matched.
@Stephenmachine1978 you're absolutely right. It's a shame he let his adiction get the best of him. When I heard he had died from a fall from a window in Paris. The tributes given to him on TV never realy caught the genius that he was. Try to find the movies Let's get lost. The music and images are trmendous. The woman he was with in Italy is amazing.
You heard the man, caddyshack, wannabe who? He had it all, and lost it, to drug addiction. Still, one of the great trumpeters, and a fantastic singer, in his day...
Chet had such a great way of stringing notes together in fluid lines as he does here. I played with him and all the talk and conjecture about his dope use is just cornball Once he told me "That's my deal with life. I get to take all the dope and you get to listen to me play"....even steven in his mind. Chet never apologized for his dope use which I admired greatly about him. It was only a big tragedy to everybody else
Candy killed him..remember Chris Farley1 Brent Mydland, Layne Staley, River Phoenix, Mitch Hedberg, Eric Show, Chet Baker , Hillel Slovak et Jean-Michel Basquiat. all died on Speedball..
yes it was that but..he was also on speedball(it could be a crime to..so strange..the man jumped like that from a window..that's so weird, remember it's the same thing for Brian Jones but he jumped on a pool and was high on amphetamine , i'm sure Chet Baker and Brian JOnes were Killed..ok when you take drugs you feel hot , but these men were not stupid to kill themselves
Chet, I do, and I feel blessed , even during his sad times and not so great performances, he still wows me...like the man said.."He never played a note he didn't mean...awesome
I couldn't agree more with you. no matter how fucked-up he might have been on a given day, he always played his heart out. the man was the last great poet of jazz and there will never be another one like him. at least as far as I can see.
This song got me into the brilliance that is Chet baker.
My favorite.
Peace.

I LOVE this. Chet sings beautifully and plays brilliantly. Too bad the bass sounds like rubber bands though.
