In an Assassin's Creed Developer Diary video, Jade Raymond speaks about Altaïr's lack of his ring finger, which is due to the initiation ceremony when a novice is promoted to an Assassin. The ring finger of the left hand is cut off, the hidden blade is installed, and the new born Assassin is ready to complete the missions bestowed upon him or her.

@crazykawafool No. He is missing a index finger on his left hand :) So he has his hand in a fist when he attacks.

@crazykawafool Actually, Altair has 4 fingers, that is why his hand isn't opening, the blade is going through where the empty space of where his finger should be, if you play assassins creed 2, you will see that Da vinchi jokes whit ezio that he got to sacrifice his ringfinger for Da vinci to make the blade for him, and then he said that the recipe was over 100 years old, and that he could make some modifications to the blade that makes it go under the hand, not through it ;)

@crazykawafool In the first one the assasins had to have their ring finger removed so their hand could still be a fist and have the blade out. It was changed in later games, so this was probably a pic from the early game or something.
