@Dreamewalker I would...there's thousand of fans waiting for this series to continue. I personally think that they should go onto the ps3 at least as downloadable games in their full uncut glory.
It's great to point out that despite the grief EarthBound fans went through with Mother 3, it pales in comparison to Shenmue fans not being able to see more than half the rest of their story. This was a great overview of what Shenmue was and how it fared. It's a shame that developers and publishers don't want to take as much of a chance on creative titles anymore.

I love S E G A but, they need to take a cue from C A P C O M and allow a Western team to do the fighting, and a Japanese to do the story.. Yakuza4 fighting was annoying!
Look how much it benefited C A P C O M when they allowed DeadRising2 to be made be a Western team
@CakeBeneathTheIcing in the xbox version if you take pictures of the people you're supposed to take pictures of, it unlocks short comics. they showed the boat sequence where Ryo defeats the guy who stole the phoenix mirror (or the other thing) from his dojo. this explains why the little girl and her mom thank Ryo at the beginning of Shenmue II after arriving in Hong Kong
@RyunSharp the dc is the tupac of gaming. it's dead but every once in awhile it has new games just like how tupac keeps on releasing new albums after death

One of my all-time favorite games on any system. They need to release it on xbox live arcade, like sonic adventure and crazy taxi. Good job on the video. Let's hope for a shenmue III sometime in the future...
@conradojavier not following you there.... but we're on the same page i'm sure- this method of "the game that saved the system" worked for sega before (Sonic with the Megadrive/Genesis) but no, this game was a little too of a fringe market idea to really be a good idea to put all your chips in, i'd still consider trying it out if i could though.
@conradojavier actualy the people screwed the dreamcast after seeing demos of the ps2 and i dont know where you got your info but the ps2 was the 2nd highest grossing console and still is but the nes is at the top not the ds...just sayin
It kind of bugs me when people say Shenmue cost $70 million. It was the whole Shenmue project so Shenmue 1, Shenmue 2, most of the assets for Shenmue 3 and the other games, and the saturn version together cost $70 million.
shenmue 2 didn't fail in terms of sales, it failed in japan because dreamcast was dead in 2001 but the european version sold extremely well and to this day stands as the most imported video game in history. even big american chains imported the game and sold it in us for dreamcast with a bootdisc. that's how badly people wanted it!
I've always wanted to play shenmue. My friend came over to my house with his genesis and he had all of the Shenmue disc but not a single disc worked. :(
Wow... Shenmue fans got it worse than Space Channel 5 fans. Both got a sequel, but there was so much more meant for Shenmue. Really wish I could have played it at some point when I had the Dreamcast.
Although...the NiGHTS fanbase had to wait over a decade for the first and only sequel to appear, living off of cameos in the meanwhile. Who knows? Maybe there's still a chance for Shenmue III to appear one of these days.
@SmashQueen Now that Starcraft 2 has been released and Duke Nukem Forever is coming out next febuary not to mention marvel versus capcom3 (all these games took over ten years to be made) you never know what's gonna happen.
Shenmue is an unlucky series that will continue. For F.R.E.E. to truly fit it's name, it would require a very immersive environment, but today, it cost a fortune for people to construct the world, to research the environment it's based on, hire the Voice actors, etc. And since this game has more of an immersive story aspect to it than out right gameplay, it lacks the appeal to justify such a price tag.
@kutvn It is also ironic, for some good games to have been published unfinished with bugs just to meet financial deadlines, this game was published without money in mind. This game was made with heart, and there was no amount of budget that was too much for it. For the high price, it was worth every penny of effort. It's a shame many gamers are downright idiots.
Sega seem to only publish games these days. They are more like Activision than Capcom. Their internal devs seem to be almost non-existent now.
It should be noted that Sega All Stars Racing had Ryo because Sumo wanted him in it, not Sega. The most appropriate game for Ryo, Lan Di, Xiuying, and Chai to appear as guests/unlockables would be Virtua Fighter, yet Sega completely missed the boat on that.
I special ordered the version he's talking about when it first came out. I don't know if all European dreamcast games had that weird case but I kinda like it better than our US ones.
Sega fans in general seem to have it bad. No Shenmue 3, the 2008 Golden Axe was horrendous, there hasn't been a decent 3D Sonic game in ages, and I personally am still waiting on a new Jet Set Radio. All Stars Racing is promising, as well as Sonic 4 but it does just seem to be fan service right now. Only time will tell I guess.
The reason we will never see all 16 chapters of the Shenmue Anthology on NEXT GEN with HD graphics 1080p, surround sound, Japanese Voice/English subs is because it would be too expensive to create and not enough fans to buy it.
I'm a hardcore Shenmue fan and have been waiting for part 3 since 2002, but now I really don't worry about it anymore. My plan is to save enough money to travel to the actual Guilin China and experience the landscapes/rivers that Ryo did. That's the closest I'll get!!!
The one suggestion I have is to try and slow your speech down a bit. At times you sound quite rushed, and as a result, enunciation is lost and your words slur together a bit. Your tone and inflection is pretty much perfect though, and you sound very professional in that regard. Cheers for making excellent reviews and keep up the excellent work! :)
I just found your videos recently and have watched most of your reviews. I really like your videos and find them incredibly entertaining and informative. Your attention to detail in researching each games background is impeccable.
At the time, I really wanted a DC. My friend had one, and I played it all the time. A year later, they were selling DC's for like $50 or less. My parents waited and I got an Xbox for my birthday that year, like a month after release.
Although the Dreamcast is amazing, and have since purchased one, and own nearly 100 games for it, I do not regret getting an Xbox.
I remember watching an interview with Yu Suzuki on Game Center CX (perhaps known outside of Japan as Retro Game Master), and he said that he was planning to create Shenmue Online for the PC, which is sort of like SNK's canceled game, KOF World (or KOF Online; see SNK Wiki's article), but they were both canceled; however, SNK's project continues.
Nowadays, Sega was acquired by Sammy (Battle Blaze, Dyna Gear, Survival Arts, RumbleFish and the Guilty Gear series), becoming a little worse.
If it's any consolation, the likelihood of seeing Shemue III is still much, much higher than Duke Nukem Forever or even a Western release of the Final Mix versions of Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2.
I think PS2's First Person and tactical Shooters also played a big roll in its ability to dominate the last generation's market. Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, SOCOM, Ghost Recon ect. Military games where big at the time, and Dreamcast had little or no titles like this. GTA was big but military FPS like Medal of Honor Frontline where also a big driving point IMO.
That was a really interesting look into that series. I never played it but man do I want to from this look into it. It is a shame that they can't release the 3rd part. I hope they will do it for the fans someday.
I love Shenmue and always will. Man this review makes me want to go hook up my Dreamcast just to play it. Also, I've loved your reviews for a while. There is a place for all the angry critics out there, but it's refreshing to always see someone talk about the good things in gaming history. The things that made us love gaming in the first place.
I love shenmue, it took a while for me to find it and see what the big deal was with people hating it and loving it then I got it cheap and wow I couldn't predict something as awesome as it, people can choose to hate it but it takes the kind of person who has patience and dedication. I give it a chance more people need to aswell.
I never cared about the story in GTA, I just liked the freedom to whatever, whenever. I mean, Shenmue kinda had that too, but if I have a choice between driving a ferrari at full throttle, blocking of a street, and blowing stuff up till the cops come or rummaging through a fridge, guess which I'm gonna pick.
I made the right choice subbing to you dude. Fantastic two-part video! If only they made more games like Shenmue. I honestly wish I could see such details as seeing what's inside fridges and closets. I really do! As well as great storytelling. I guess the Dreamcast really is a special little console. Maybe Sega will have another console someday.
I remember me and my sister would spend all his money buying gasshapons and stuff XD we got the whole collection of sonic figures and it was so fun! XD
I wish they would re-release the games for like psp and finally release the III and onwards to all present systems!
If Sega were to release the game to all systems, I'm sure it would finally sell what it deserves!
3:46 I giggle everytime when I see "Torrington" in GTA3 because I live in a small town right next to a town called "Torrington", and the funny thing is that there are gangs there (not really, they are just wiggers), good ole' Torrington, Connecticut.
great video maybe you could do some other other dreamcast game like power stone and sky of arcadia or even illbleed or bluestinger could be nice sorry maybe im asking too much still great video as always im glad im subscribed :)
Which is why they shouldn't have wasted money on doing all voices in English. I'm pretty sure it's much better subbed with original Japanese voice acting.
I've heard tons about Shenmue (I mean, who hasn't), but I haven't actually been interested in playing it until this look at it. So thanks, because of you, it looks like I'll be playing a game I should have long ago.
@Bertelhauch well, as of this writing it's only been public for >18 hours. personally, i'm happy with these numbers. but i get what you're saying, so thanks!
@Bertelhauch i see what your saying, my alexander here should be WAAAY more popular, hes a great writer, and a good actor! he has a great speaking voice and a passion for retro games! (plus great tastes in music, if you stalk retroware TV like me) :P
I think you are not being fair with Shenmue. IMO, it was the best game that the Dreamcast had,it had a really good plot and, even if it was slow, it also was an adecuated pace.
I even remember that I had a routine to drink 2 Soda drinks per day on Shenmue "because I felt like having something to drink"
And when Shenmue 2 was announced...words cannot express how happy I was. Shame that we never had the chance to saw the continuation of the saga.
I remember finding Shenmue II at a used game store and the asshole clerk insisted it should be pronounced "Shen-moy" (rhymes with Roy) - he arrogantly told me he studied Chinese for years, and that's how it is pronounced. OK, good for you, (I wanted to say) but in America the agreed pronunciation is Shenmue.
The problem with Shenmue is that they have had a really bad number of sold copies. So that means that when they (if they) release Shenmue 3 they have to first sell more copies than before and that is a huge risk even if the sequal is tempting to get your hands on for a fan.
Shenmue to me was one of the best games of all time. I absolutely loved it and played it for days. The end of the game is just an epic battle fest. How anyone can not like this game is beyond me.
To tell you the Truth... I love Shenmue but most of the time i keep going to that stupid Gachapon trying to get that gold sonic...and wasting money at the arcade...
but i guess thats the power shenmue...making you do thing what a normal person would do when they have lots of spare change... anyway Good Review!
you know their is something that really makes me mad pout shenmue 2...in shenmue 1 their is a save file that you can use in shenmue 2 to have all your old items from shenmue 1..i was so happy that i can use my old items again...but thanks to the Europe version that never happened...sheeesh!
Whenever I think (or see as common as they are) of quick time events I think of this game, which goes pretty far since I've never touched the game. The series reminds me of Xenosaga, as how they were planning on six episodes but had to shorten them to 3.
Hold on... Errrm... Did I miss something? What is this? Title says Shenmue Part 2/2... Why am I watching this megaman review again?

you can't go in almost any building in GTA4. You can go only in very limited and small shops, and savehouses + few flats from missions.

I have to say, I liked this.
I honestly think you could do this as a series, and I don't say that about many people.

I played Shenmue 2 on the Xbox, as a blind rental. It was a really really damn good game, and I'm still hoping for a sequel! Awesome video :D

Do not despair. This game shall surely come...

I mean, Shenmue kinda had that too, but if I have a choice between driving a ferrari at full throttle, blocking of a street, and blowing stuff up till the cops come or rummaging through a fridge, guess which I'm gonna pick.
neogeon 1 year ago
I made the right choice subbing to you dude. Fantastic two-part video! If only they made more games like Shenmue. I honestly wish I could see such details as seeing what's inside fridges and closets. I really do! As well as great storytelling. I guess the Dreamcast really is a special little console. Maybe Sega will have another console someday.

Shenmue was such a good game =O
I remember me and my sister would spend all his money buying gasshapons and stuff XD we got the whole collection of sonic figures and it was so fun! XD
I wish they would re-release the games for like psp and finally release the III and onwards to all present systems!
If Sega were to release the game to all systems, I'm sure it would finally sell what it deserves!

3:46 I giggle everytime when I see "Torrington" in GTA3 because I live in a small town right next to a town called "Torrington", and the funny thing is that there are gangs there (not really, they are just wiggers), good ole' Torrington, Connecticut.

i tried to get into shenmue, but the terrible voice acting and the slow pace killed it for me
SkankinDevil89 1 year ago
@SkankinDevil89
Which is why they shouldn't have wasted money on doing all voices in English. I'm pretty sure it's much better subbed with original Japanese voice acting.

I wonder if they commercialized shenmue a little better would that have saved the dreamcast and saved sega?

OK, good for you, (I wanted to say) but in America the agreed pronunciation is Shenmue.
svicciarelli 1 year ago
@svicciarelli thats why you wear ear plugs when you go into game stores >3> the clerks always want to show "how cool they are"
6thhokagephil 1 year ago
The problem with Shenmue is that they have had a really bad number of sold copies. So that means that when they (if they) release Shenmue 3 they have to first sell more copies than before and that is a huge risk even if the sequal is tempting to get your hands on for a fan.

Whenever I think (or see as common as they are) of quick time events I think of this game, which goes pretty far since I've never touched the game. The series reminds me of Xenosaga, as how they were planning on six episodes but had to shorten them to 3.
