I think most of the negative comments may be coming from people who have never lived anywhere else... I've lived in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, and many smaller cities and Nanaimo is one if not the best place to raise a family. been here since 1998
in nanaimo if you'rr a homeless criminal drug addict the city council deems you worthy of being given a free environemntaly luxury condo with free hydro where you can makes your plans for your next break and enter
@CJDJ23 something else funny about nanaimo is the map of the city and they're so desperat to have an arts district but if you follow thier own map there is no arts district and if you look at the map they have of thier own downtown you have to belive it was drawn up by some hillybilly hooped up on moonshine, downtown is a joke, the best thing about it is leaving and going up to parksville or down to victoria
@CJDJ23 as someone else said, the more they try to improve downtown nanaimo the more they make it worse, its like a money pit, and its not the slightest bit better than it was before, i understand what that person was saying about it being like nazi germany with the signs and fences and security gaurds and cameras, they're so stupid in nanaimo they don't even have street lights or paved sidewalks along the entire length of the city, but they sure do in parksville
@CJDJ23 don't fucking lie to me, i know all about drinking at the river-- and what bar downtown are people drinking at ?? the grizzy bar, the old flag, the commerical, the press room, the balmoral, the jolly miner, spankys-- oh thats right they've all closed down haven't they cuz not enough people were coming downtown anymore-- so don't fucking lie to me
Don't think this is such a bad city. Believe me, it's like every other single damn city and I'm guessing there's sketchy parts in all the other major cities of the world such as LA and NY.
@HarbourHighlights to be honest i felt i was in a wierd version of a nazi germany twilight zone, there were cameras and fences and security gaurds everwhere
courtenay is a much better place, myself i live out near woodgrove where theres things to do.
downtown nanaimo is a dump, the more they try to improve it the more they make it worse, i use to live down there on prideaux street, i know what i'm talking about
@mooncloud100 i went to downtown nanaimo again tonight and i was shocked to learn that they lock the gate to the fishing pier at night, its a beautiful warm summer night and they lock the fishing pier, and then if that isn't bad enough they've put up " no fishing off bridge signs " on the lions bridge walkway
this is the type of PR that would make me want to visit and i think NZ could match it and i live there. Good stuff! And to all you negative people, every town in the world has bad spots but you MUST look at the good stuff and realise how lucky you are.
I've lived here in Nanaimo for 5 years and it's beautiful. Yeah, it has it's bad spots but clearly some of you people have never seen the beauty of it. Nanaimo has changed a lot in recent years, I don't plan on living here for the rest of my life but it's a place I will always call a second home.

@JamesBerkey are you part of the gang of corrupt scum in nanaimo who try to defend the fact that its gonna cost 15 million dollars to house 40 homeless people, its one of the biggest scams going and i've written to the auditor general of BC about it
@nimocity not sure what your talking about. I go to school in Abbotsford but grew up in nanaimo and during the summer i run a painting student painting company.

The video is actually reasonably accurate, which is odd for a tourism video At least they didn't try to advertise the "many" tourist attractions "in" Nanaimo.
Nanaimo has one problem - there is only one actual "tourist attractions" - stuff not available elsewhere - within city limits. The Bastion. Everything else usually mentioned as being a "Nanaimo tourist attraction" isn't actually IN Nanaimo. Certainly not accessible if you don't rent a car, because public transport won't get you there.
I moved here 8 or so years ago. I like this place a lot. Good people, great weather, centrally located, it's a good place to live. But I wish they'd stop lying to themselves about how great a tourist attraction it really is. It's not, and the current city council and the sycophants surrounding them need to understand that before they can make things better. Because they could, easily, but not if they keep lying to themselves.
I grew up in Nanaimo and am now living in Southern California. I can still remember the wonderful times we use to have there as kids, playing in the forest, taking the ferry to Gabriola, and climbing Mt. Benson. There use to be a great swimming hole somewhere near Hieroglyphics park off the highway, but all I really remember was how cold the water always was. We lived on Princess St. across from Bayview school, and used to take cardboard and slide down the grassy hills at Chadwicks farm.
Nanaimo may not be a perfect place, BUT WHERE IS????, ya there is poverty, drugs & hookers, everywhere has these things. I would say Nanaimo has more good things in & around it than bad. It basically has something for everyone & anyone (good or bad). Overall a great place to live or visit. One of my favorite places on earth.
Nanaimo is a great place and what you people say about it is not all true like hookers and stuff no and where everyother place there is bad there too not just nanaimo!!!so keep your nasty comments TO YOUR SELF leave nice freakin comments not rude ones
Beautiful place, but no jobs, lots of crackheads, hookers, and weirdos everywhere. I certainly wouldn't say it's a safe town to go walking at night by yourself.
are you kidding? Ive been biking and walking all around Nanaimo since I was 14 at all hours, including Southgate and the Old City Quarter, all throught Harewood and the north end
WOW is it true that it costs 13.00 one way to take the Ferry to Vancouver? -That would totally suck, I applied to and was considering VIU university in Nanaimo. I live in Toronto and it would be a tough transition if I got stuck in a hick harbour town.
great nature, great scenery, great weather, I was just saying it mite end up being a hick town by the harbour you know, at least compared to a big city
This video doesn't show a lot of stuff that it should. Nanaimo is a very beautiful place, but it also has a kick ass night life... you just gotta find it.
This video looks interesting! Nanaimo is a city on Vancouver Island. Nanaimo is larger than all of the cities and towns on Vancouver Island except for Victoria. I am a stranger to the user of the video.
I am sorry you had such a bad experience here in Nanaimo. Where did you move from? Did you visit here before you moved here? It does take some getting used to living on an island, but it isn't for everyone.
A Nanaimo video like this one lured my wife and I to retire there. What a mistake that was. We had never seen so much poverty, jobless people, and unemployed aboriginals. The cost of the ferry, and the small plane flghts to Vancouver "were way too expensive".
We also gave Victoria a try, and it was just as bad, with homeless people everywhere. The person who made this video should be sued for false advertising.
I think you will like it here! I tutored a student from Mexico last year! I have had students from all over the world and have travelled alot myself, so I can assure you Nanaimo is nice and also friendly! Good Luck!
The Pub is actually on Protection Island where I live, we row out to Newcastle Island in our Sailing Dory sometimes. It's awesome! Although the sea is really cold and you have to dive pretty deep to find anything. The good news about the sea is there are no sharks or other large creatures due to the fact that it is too shallow for them too survive and It's also too cold (only reef sharks, look like mini cat fish, live there). :D
hi .. i can't answer your question because i have never been to BC ever.. but I really cant see there being a problem getting along with people as long as your friendly yourself.
HOLY CRAP! i seen myself there in 5th grade on the dock with brody swimming ROFLL!!! Goodtimess 2 years ago!! LMAOO! I'm the one laying down on the dock looking sideways at the boys LOL!
Their ban on fireworks was the stupidest thing I've ever seen. Total bandwagon jump. Their solution to druggies was even worse, now they hang out in my neighbourhood. That's just the beginning.
Oh yeah? This ban is "So effective" that people are just bringing the exact devices (roman candles, air bombs, etc.) into the city when they could have easily just banned those. If they did, people would still buy stuff inside the city, and they wouldn't get the things that were causing so much trouble. But they still refuse to admit the ban was simple minded and dumb, and wasn't fair. Fireworks are no worse than alcohol, they're just targeted more easily because not as many people use them.
Nice! I'm from Mexico, and live a couple of months in Nanaimo, is freaking cool! And Monica & John's Hostel is the best! The Canadian girls down there where HOT!!!... I want to go back, really bad! Cheeers!
umm there is nothing to do here no jobs no good malls dirty bumbs and crack heads everywhere..great dirty litte city, full of people who think they are better than everyone else!
i love nanaimo with all my heart..i lived there for 15 years and wish i still did..Australia is nice but my heart belongs to nanaimo. even if nanaimo is a bit of a dump now
I grew up in Nanaimo and really miss the beauty and pace of life in that wonderful little city. Well, I heard it's not so little any more. When we left and move to Southern California, Nanaimo was a booming metropolis of about 7,500 people. We lived on Princess St. Nanaimo, one of the most beautiful places in the World. Our family still makes Nanaimo bars every chance we get. Can't seem to get enough of those wonderful little treats. Props to everyone in Nanaimo!
Come on, all it does is rain in Nanaimo 365 days a year and everyone smokes pot. You don't move there unless you smoke pot

you like the fuckers who run this city?
Their ban on fireworks was the stupidest thing I've ever seen. Total bandwagon jump. Their solution to druggies was even worse, now they hang out in my neighbourhood. That's just the beginning.

well yes i agree with the fireworks but i love crack! and i don't even live in harewood
