Intercity 125s wipe the floor with the much more modern voyagers. 125s are silky smooth and whisper quiet compared with voyagers, which are noisy, rattly and jerky, oh, and it's British too.
Britain should still be designing and building our own trains, we had a golden oppourtunity to recently, but traitor Brown gave the contract to Japan.
@stepheng1483 I really like this train when I travelled to Bristol. But until they do some renovation or create something better, somebody else will. For example, class 395s.
Good old IC125/HST, still going strong after more thirty years and not bettered yet.
Some of the coaches seen with the prototype set at the start now form part of the Royal Train. Says a lot for the design if they're considered good enough for HM.
I remember watching them at Hadley Wood when they were first introduced to the East Coast route. Still prefered the sight and sound of the Deltics though
Still the most compforatble train running on our network today - and still the fastest diesel train in the world, having achieved a top speed of 143mph.
The new IEP dielsel/electric/hybrid rubbish that the Govt is propsing will never match this superb piece of engineering.
Tis truly was "the age of the train" as Sir Jimmy told us!
But as me and my mate agree, unfortunatly not the age of the train. because as he sed that BR were in colossal debt to the government and they were also hosting discussion to privatise it.
Has nobody noticed that the music from about 1 min in sounds exactly like Star wars AND that the component being craned at 1'12" looks exactly like the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon?
But this film was apparently made in 1976 BEFORE the release of Star Wars!
It's really quite strange to see them being built and being brand new...I know they don't look that old when you see them from a distance, but in some ways you can tell that they're getting on a bit!
That is true.. and the same could be said of the Westerns and eventually the class 50s but to be honest the 125sdeserve a place in our heritage.. mainly coz they are still the fastest diesels in the world and we British... designed & built them! touché
If the Beeching axes had been less severe, the deltics and Westerns would have lasted much longer because there would have been more railway lines left, and there would have been demand for any locomotives available!
great bit of footage, I work on the hsts even today, they have changed very little except the paxmans are gone but everything else stil the same very successful train , be nice if there was more videos around like this
These trains are among my top 10 diesels. Who would have thought these iconic trains would've have been in service more than 30 years after they were introduced.
A friend of mine says some of these trains are worthy of preservion.
Hmm im not suprised really. Rail travel isnt that big anymore and that exciting, i bet my business idea would perk up the rail industry. what do i know, im only a 15 year old teenager lol.
The train at the beginning, is of course 41001 Later 43000, which is now preserved at york national railway museum. (its sister 41002 was scrapped years ago)
Does anyone know if this power car is ever started?
The train at the start of the clip is not the APT,it is the prototype HST.I believe one of the power cars from that is in the National Railway Museum at York.
Just to put everyone right, the government pulled the money out of APT, the German's went on to produce tilting trains a few years later, the problem with the BR tilt system on the APT, was that it worked too well and made the ride feel unnatural and some people thus felt sick, the tilt systems used today allow for the human need to feel that you are travelling around a corner!
the train at the start of the vid is the APT, something British Rail didn't want to pay out for. that train had a titling mechanism. But BR was too tight-aresed with the money, so it never worked properly. the design got sold to the italians, who put them in the Voyagers and Pendo's!
The 125 is a symbol of british engineering. built well over 25 years ago, and with a new coat of paint every so often they go back out onto the tracks.
no it completely tilted which was the problem giving passengers a sick feeling, if it hadnt tilted so much then could have worked.. ofcourse they didnt know that at the time..
I remember the reports after some of the first runs... Had BR wanted to invest more money into the tilting mechanism then we'd have many more trains with it in. The Class 91 locos and MK4 coaches were supposed to have the tilting mechanism fitted providing the APT trails continued, which they didn't.
Somebody else who doesn't know what they are talking about. The APT after an initial public launch that went wrong in the worst winter for 30 years, the APT ran for I think atleast a couple of years as a relief train from Euston. The technology after the bugs were ironed out was a great success problem was Thatcher hated trains and it was her government that pulled the plug on its continued development. Built on a shoe string budget, the APT was streets ahead of the Iti and German technology
They were originally designed as permanent sets ie 253xxx/254xxx - no need for buffers at front or even between trailer cars. They still have a rescue drawbar coupler under nose and two fixed buffers beneath side skirts. 91's have buffers as they were orinally designed to act as freight locos during the night (they still have a brake timing changeover switch in the cab (Goods/Pass)although this option has very rarely if ever been used.
Interesting bit of trvia there :) I always wondered if it would be good to use HST's on freight trains. I mean, it's not particularly different to another loco.
The original plan was to use the HST power cars in pairs at night for freight (parcels I think) hence the prototype at York has a driving compartment at both ends (small one next to the gangway) to allow shunting. I don't think they'd be much cop though, as built they are not geared for freight - well over twice the speed of a class 60 remember - and when accelerating you need to chase the amps with the power controller, unlike, say, a 47 or 56 which will take full whack if needed.
I love the HSTs but the bad thing with working them is the amount of smoke they pump out when your with them for more than a few hours you feel the cough coming on , but worth it

I have fond memories of watching these pull away from Durham station, when I was a little boy in the early 80's. My mum and dad used to take me to Wharton Park in Durham so I could stand right next to the tracks behind the little wooden fence. Happy days!
nope, unless theres usual west coast mainline repairs in the north on weekends, and you have to travel up the east coast which is much more interesting ;)
Ah, the dear old HST. My brother and I used to sit near the edge of the platform at Ealing Broadway station just to feel the blast of them speeding past at 100+ mph. Beautiful trains
originally the 125's locos were going to be bullet shaped (to reduce damage to tunnels because of the air pressure and to improve aerodynamics), but because of the cost of the glass the design was changed. pity, we could have had our own bullet trains...
Adelantes were NOT suposed to replace hsts but to supplement them on Great Western, they are now replacing the Valenta engines with MTU engines and getting rid of the Adelantes!!!
Long live the 125!!!! Anyone who replaces here is a crimminal that includes virgin trains! Just wich her younger sister the APT was givien more of a chance then we would have had two all time classics which the world would be copying!
Damn right. The voyager might look impressive in the station but the ride isn't as smooth as the 125 (as voyagers have engines in each carriage), the voyagers break down at Dawlish every time they get even the slightest bit of water on them, the voyagers have less table seats, and they are way more cramped inside. I am so pleased to hear FGW is refurbishing all the 125s for at least 10 more years of life.
Is that true? That really is superb news, so nice to hear and obviously the HSTs are still giving reliable service after all this time. Long may they live!
why dont they just have more steam? isnt that like well funner and interesting? dont get me wrong, the HST's are grwat, we have a variation of them here in Australia (XPT for NSW) but id much perfer a Streak running down the mainline at 100mph... but thats just me
I've been on the Australian version of this (the XPT) between Brisbane, and Sydney, while on holiday. To be honest, it's not as good or as fast as the HST, we didn't get above 60mph the whole time, and that's nearly 600 miles!!
The 100mph steam train was a nice thought, but here in the UK, that just isn't fast enough.
well the trusty 125 is set to be around for a good while yet.. most if not all the power cars are receiving new engines to replace the Paxman "valenta" engine which they were built with so don't panic.. they ain't dissapearing just yet
wot i read (to take this further) is the Voyagers replaced 47s AND the HSTs. adelantes run alongside the HSTs and MML were going to replace the HSTs with 222s but decided not 2
hate to say it.. but slightly wrong!! 125s are being replaced by those 'adelante' trains (on Great western lines). Voyagers replaced those virgin class 47s!!

why dont they just have more steam? isnt that like well funner and interesting? dont get me wrong, the HST's are grwat, we have a variation of them here in Australia (XPT for NSW) but id much perfer a Streak running down the mainline at 100mph... but thats just me

I've been on the Australian version of this (the XPT) between Brisbane, and Sydney, while on holiday. To be honest, it's not as good or as fast as the HST, we didn't get above 60mph the whole time, and that's nearly 600 miles!!
The 100mph steam train was a nice thought, but here in the UK, that just isn't fast enough.

well the trusty 125 is set to be around for a good while yet.. most if not all the power cars are receiving new engines to replace the Paxman "valenta" engine which they were built with so don't panic.. they ain't dissapearing just yet

can we all stop arguing please... all I know is the new rolling stock is poor compared to the comfort of the trusty 125!

when i was growing up, the 125 was second only to the concord, in terms of supersonic coolness

wot i read (to take this further) is the Voyagers replaced 47s AND the HSTs. adelantes run alongside the HSTs and MML were going to replace the HSTs with 222s but decided not 2

voyagers replaced class 47s + mk3s AND HST sets which are now serving the MML.

adalate's are not replacing the 125's because my brother drives them they are all getting referbished with a brand new paint of coat

The best train ever!
And they replaced the HST/125 with a glorified Sprinter in the Voyager!
Roll on HST2!

hate to say it.. but slightly wrong!! 125s are being replaced by those 'adelante' trains (on Great western lines). Voyagers replaced those virgin class 47s!!

Anyway, sadly no HSTs seen in the North West anymore!
