I actually got fckin' scared of this game, especially the part when the man gets killed and eaten by two zombie-vampires in the graveyard while it was raining and they looked fckin' damn scary when they started looking at the camera with red eyes and then i turned off the system o_o, LMAO!! :D good times and memories :)

I actually rented Soul Reaver 2 first. The thing is, I made a mistake. At the time of rental, I was thinking of Soul Caliber. XD Best accident ever. Caliber blows. This series is truly epic.

Agree. I don't like Raziel personally. He's too unorthodox. Also - Kain was much more interesting person in the first game. They turned him into another generic villain so Raziel could be 'the cool guy' now. I don't like that.
@Panczekolada The young Kain, in Blood Omen, and also in Blood Omen 2 is the best anti-hero i've ever seen, he destroy everything that stand against him. SR and SR2 are amazing games, the story is genial and Raziel is a very good character, but the first has a better dark atmosphere and Kain is sooo powerfull when you get the right weapon and spells, more powerfull than any other character in the series, who played this game know what i mean XD.
No matter how many times I played SR1, I always amazed at the quality of the opening cutscene, especially as it was a PS1 game. I personally think it was ahead of its time.

I really need to replay all of these games again. (excluding BO2). I remember how epic the story was, how well it all interconnected when it shouldn't of (actual ending of SR). But damn, they did a really good job. Language use full of expression and perfectly voiced for this amazing story.

Kain didnt want to kill them. Rahab explains to Raziel that Kain saved them from themselves by making them vampires. Even in their mutated forms the brothers still thank Kain, except Raziel who blindly hates him for things he doesn't understand.
so my guess is kain had to cast raziel because he wanted to save him from the fate of his brothers, he wanted to save him from the fate of entering the reaver (coin flip philosophy in soul reaver 2) and vampires evolve into the ancient vampires, the ones with 3 fingers like Ianos.
This game was absolutely fantastic. Very in-depth gameplay and storyline. The soundtrack, the characters, the environments, everything was just so well thought out. Would make a great movie.
LOK is the best ever, WHO cares about tomb raider? all you need to know, is she survives (and thats a pain in the rear, in my opinion) and "no one, not evan you shall stand in my way" as kain said, edios do the right thing, kill lara!
I wish game developers still put this much thought and passion into the story, characters and world. Now its just the same old crap, repeated the same old way...
This brings back so many fond memories. I grew up playing this game and I don't care how good games become in the future, The Legacy of Kain will always have great sentimental value to me. They’re brilliant.

The voice actor of The Elder God died. That's the excuse I give them anyway. I don't understand why they can't find someone to imitate the same voice though. Tony Jay voiced characters in every single game. He would have wanted a proper end to his project.

I loved this gaming generation which had the best plots and gameplays. Now, all I see is rip-offs of classics and unending sagas (like Elder Scrolls, Call of Duty and God of War) with the same gameplay and different graphics... I miss Crash Bandicoot :(

I believe Lake of The Dead is actually is an analogy to the Lake of Fire, which was symbolics for hell from which Raziel asceneded in order to have his revenge. This is one of the games that brought my linguistic skills to a whole new level!

@VtheArcher - With you 110%. The game's storyline is similar to GoW and side by side on say PS3/Xbox platform, Raziel would be as great a god warrior as Kratos is ... I can imagine how Nosgoth would look, infact come to think of it ... there are some striking similarities between the two games ... one that comes to mind is the Muses vs The Silenced Cathedral

Why do all vampires have to be these damn sissy looking "pretty boys" nowadays? They always have to be "romantic". Vampires are much more fun when they're the vile, repulsive, bloodthirsty monsters that legends and stories have made them out to be.
I used to play this and the original when they came out because of the great story. We need more vampires like these, and less high school "love story" crap. And, of course, the vampire vs. werewolf thing has been done to death.

La Soul Reaver (Segadora de Almas en la versión en español) es un arma que aparece en la serie de juegos Legacy of Kain. Es un tipo de espada flamberge, de 127 cm de longitud, de hoja ancha serpentina, forjada con materiales desconocidos, presumiblemente carbón, hierro y huesos.
La habilidad especial de esta espada es la de absorber el alma de sus víctimas, y su poder solo puede ser repelido por un artefacto conocido como la Piedra Nexo. Su rol a través de los juegos es bastante significativo, siendo más que solo una simple arma para Kain o Raziel.
La Reaver fue forjada en el pasado de Nosgoth, por el vampiro Vorador cuando aún era humano, en algún momento del final de la Guerra entre los Antiguos vampíros y los Hylden. Dotada por los oscuros poderes de los Antiguos vampíros, la Reaver poseía la habilidad de drenar la sangre de sus víctimas, por lo que la espada era conocida como la Blood Reaver.
Raziel, que había regresado en el tiempo hasta esa época, deseoso de vengar la muerte del Antiguo, reclama la Reaver para si y da muerte a los Sarafan, incluyéndose sí mismo, el Raziel humano. Esto causa una paradoja temporal, obligando a la Reaver a consumir a Raziel, transformándose en la espada devoradora de almas, la Soul Reaver.
450 años después, la Soul Reaver es dada al joven rey William el Justo por Moebius, el Tejedor del Tiempo (se ignora si durante todo este tiempo la espada estuvo en poder de Moebius, ya que no se han dado pistas al respecto). Debido a que el espíritu de Raziel estaba corrupto, al entrar en contacto con la Soul Reaver, el joven William se fue corrompiendo hasta convertirse en el tiránico Némesis, un megalómano que quería unir todo Nosgoth bajo su reinado del terror.
Se ignora como, 50 años después, la Soul Reaver aparece en la Catedral del Averno, siendo encontrada por el joven Kain, quien llevaba a cabo su cruzada para matar a cada hechicero del Círculo de los Nueve y restablecer el orden de Nosgoth. Desde ese momento, el arma permanecería en manos de Kain hasta su destrucción.
Durante su travesía, Kain, quien se había unido al Ejército de la Última Esperanza del Rey Ottmar, se ve obligado a usar un Artefacto de Flujo Temporal que había encontrado también en la Catedral del Averno, debido a la inminente derrota de su bando ante las hordas de Némesis, durante la Guerra de la Última Resistencia. El Artefacto lo envía 50 años hacia el pasado, donde Kain decide matar a William y evitar que este se transforme en Némesis.
Tanto Kain como William portaban una Soul Reaver (la Soul Reaver del presente y la Soul Reaver del futuro que portaba Kain), lo que causa nuevamente una paradoja temporal, obligando a la Soul Reaver de William a romperse en dos partes, lo que determino la muerte del joven rey. Luego de terminar su misión, Kain usa el Artefacto para volver a su época, ignorando que sus acciones habían cambiado el curso de la historia.
Los pedazos de la Reaver son dejados en la tumba de William, ubicada en la antigua Fortaleza de los Sarafan, ahora el cuartel general de Moebius. 20 años después, Raziel, quien venia del futuro distante de Nosgoth, repararía la espada inconscientemente, al hacer que la espada espectral y la Soul Reaver entraran en contacto. Es de suponerse que la espada seria llevada después de esto a la Catedral del Averno por Moebius, donde 30 años después seria encontrada por el joven Kain.
El destino final de la espada estaría determinado por una tercera paradoja temporal. Durante el primer enfrentamiento entre el viejo Kain y el Raziel espectral, miles de años después de la caída de los Pilares, la espada fue destruida cuando Kain intento usarla para matar a Raziel. Raziel entonces se fusiona con el espíritu de la espada, liberado de esta luego de su destrucción. Ahora, la Soul Reaver serviría como una espada espectral, fusionada a la esencia de Raziel.
Durante su viaje en el tiempo en el pasado de Nosgoth, y luego de reparar la Soul Reaver rota del pasado, Raziel se va enterando poco a poco de los orígenes de la Reaver y decide viajar hasta el pasado, en busca de Janos Audron para así poder obtener respuesta a sus dudas. Allí, ve como los Sarafan asesinan al viejo vampiro, y se decide a destruirlos, causando nuevamente el loop temporal al que estaba atado su destino –ser absorbido por la espada y cerrar aquel círculo infinito
Es justo en ese momento en el que Kain, aprovechando la paradoja temporal, decide intervenir, en un último intento por recobrar su autentico destino –recobrar su rol como el Vástago del Equilibrio–, retirando la espada del cuerpo de Raziel. Este hecho causa que la corriente del destino se desborde, cambiando la historia por completo y posponiendo el inevitable destino de Raziel…
Mientras Kain se queda con la Reaver en su estado original, un arma que drena la sangre, Raziel, 500 años en el futuro, va absorbiendo las esencias de los guardianes originales de los Pilares, incrementado los poderes de su espada espectral.
Durante la lucha con Kain, cuando este viaja hacia el futuro, la espada intenta absorber nuevamente a Raziel, quien malinterpreta esto y creyendo que las intenciones de Kain eran encerrarlo en aquella arma, le arranca el corazón a su creador, y lo arroja a la Dimensión de los Demonios.
Luego de entender su verdadero rol como el campeón de los Vampiros y los Hylden por igual, y haber purificado la espada espectral al absorber el espíritu de Ariel, convirtiéndola en la Spiritual Reaver, Raziel se arrepiente de haber destruido a Kain, pero es muy tarde: tanto él como un resucitado Janos, observan atónitos la destrucción de los Pilares.
Janos es poseído por el Amo de los Hylden, y enfrenta a Raziel. Raziel decide no matarlo, oportunidad que aprovecha el poseído Vampiro para derrotarlo.
En el mundo espectral, Raziel, al ver que la Spiritual Reaver posee la habilidad de purificar la corrupción de los Guardianes, decide hacer su último sacrificio
Poseyendo el cadáver de Moebius –asesinado por segunda vez por Kain–, y se deja atravesar por la Reaver física. Kain intenta evitarlo, pero Raziel se lo impide. Ese es su destino, purificar al Vástago del Equilibrio y volverse su arma. Purificado de la corrupción de Nuprator y armado con una Soul Reaver 3 veces más poderosa, Kain logra derrotar al Dios Antiguo y deja las ruinas de la Ciudadela Vampirica, con una pequeña esperanza de salvar Nosgoth por el sacrificio de Raziel
Después de haber derrotado al Dios Antiguo y de ver los Pilares destruidos Kain va a la Catedral del Averno y deja la Segadora de Almas para que unos años más tarde el Kain joven la recoja y la reclame como suya y así termina el círculo infinito de la Segadora de Alma.
As high as I would like to see this game' series' serie (legacy of kain : blood omen is about Kain... Legacy of kain : Soul reaver is about Raziel...), it would be after Soul reaver 3... Since the happenings of that game... And the dead of Tony Jay (Elder God voive actor).
@tuffasgong I think they both were very very different games. Blood Omen was 2d scroller and it was about a vampire and this one was 3d and they had a whole new concept of shifting realms and soul devouring thing. I don't know how you ended up comparing both of em.
This is so damn beast. I'd love a PS3 Soul Reaver...why don't they fucking make it!? And it has too have a story as good as the first one, and action as good as the second. With environments as epic as GOW3. Holy shit this is the future game of my dreams :D
Why bother with a remake? I never understand gamers' obsessions with seeing good games get remade or become movies. The original is fantastic- remakes should be reserved for games which were poor but had a lot of potential. If doing anything with the LoK franchise was possible, they should be continuing the story, not rehashing one we've already seen done perfectly well. You can't repeat something like this and still keep all the magic that the original had...
This game is still the greatest game ever. The story and characters trumps that of any movie, and the mix of puzzles and combat gameplay is second to none.
Edward Cullen would last all of 3 seconds in Nosgoth.
If they do ever make another LoK game, they could make one of the enemies a "sparkly" vampire. It'd be pathetically weak and easily killable in a variety of gruesome ways. It would be a major selling-point.

Man... this game was just too ahead of it's time... not many people can appreciate the greatness in this game and how it reflects everything about the universe that we live in... civilizations come and pass... and even THOSE we haven't had the privilege to know about... This is fucking epic beyond all measure... 5 stars...

I loved this gaming generation which had the best plots and gameplays. Now, all I see is rip-offs of classics and unending sagas (like Elder Scrolls, Call of Duty and God of War) with the same gameplay and different graphics... I miss Crash Bandicoot :(

I believe Lake of The Dead is actually is an analogy to the Lake of Fire, which was symbolics for hell from which Raziel asceneded in order to have his revenge. This is one of the games that brought my linguistic skills to a whole new level!

@VtheArcher - With you 110%. The game's storyline is similar to GoW and side by side on say PS3/Xbox platform, Raziel would be as great a god warrior as Kratos is ... I can imagine how Nosgoth would look, infact come to think of it ... there are some striking similarities between the two games ... one that comes to mind is the Muses vs The Silenced Cathedral

Why do all vampires have to be these damn sissy looking "pretty boys" nowadays? They always have to be "romantic". Vampires are much more fun when they're the vile, repulsive, bloodthirsty monsters that legends and stories have made them out to be.
I used to play this and the original when they came out because of the great story. We need more vampires like these, and less high school "love story" crap. And, of course, the vampire vs. werewolf thing has been done to death.

Dotada por los oscuros poderes de los Antiguos vampíros, la Reaver poseía la habilidad de drenar la sangre de sus víctimas, por lo que la espada era conocida como la Blood Reaver.

Raziel, que había regresado en el tiempo hasta esa época, deseoso de vengar la muerte del Antiguo, reclama la Reaver para si y da muerte a los Sarafan, incluyéndose sí mismo, el Raziel humano. Esto causa una paradoja temporal, obligando a la Reaver a consumir a Raziel, transformándose en la espada devoradora de almas, la Soul Reaver.

450 años después, la Soul Reaver es dada al joven rey William el Justo por Moebius, el Tejedor del Tiempo (se ignora si durante todo este tiempo la espada estuvo en poder de Moebius, ya que no se han dado pistas al respecto). Debido a que el espíritu de Raziel estaba corrupto, al entrar en contacto con la Soul Reaver, el joven William se fue corrompiendo hasta convertirse en el tiránico Némesis, un megalómano que quería unir todo Nosgoth bajo su reinado del terror.

Se ignora como, 50 años después, la Soul Reaver aparece en la Catedral del Averno, siendo encontrada por el joven Kain, quien llevaba a cabo su cruzada para matar a cada hechicero del Círculo de los Nueve y restablecer el orden de Nosgoth. Desde ese momento, el arma permanecería en manos de Kain hasta su destrucción.

Durante su travesía, Kain, quien se había unido al Ejército de la Última Esperanza del Rey Ottmar, se ve obligado a usar un Artefacto de Flujo Temporal que había encontrado también en la Catedral del Averno, debido a la inminente derrota de su bando ante las hordas de Némesis, durante la Guerra de la Última Resistencia. El Artefacto lo envía 50 años hacia el pasado, donde Kain decide matar a William y evitar que este se transforme en Némesis.

Tanto Kain como William portaban una Soul Reaver (la Soul Reaver del presente y la Soul Reaver del futuro que portaba Kain), lo que causa nuevamente una paradoja temporal, obligando a la Soul Reaver de William a romperse en dos partes, lo que determino la muerte del joven rey. Luego de terminar su misión, Kain usa el Artefacto para volver a su época, ignorando que sus acciones habían cambiado el curso de la historia.

Los pedazos de la Reaver son dejados en la tumba de William, ubicada en la antigua Fortaleza de los Sarafan, ahora el cuartel general de Moebius. 20 años después, Raziel, quien venia del futuro distante de Nosgoth, repararía la espada inconscientemente, al hacer que la espada espectral y la Soul Reaver entraran en contacto. Es de suponerse que la espada seria llevada después de esto a la Catedral del Averno por Moebius, donde 30 años después seria encontrada por el joven Kain.

El destino final de la espada estaría determinado por una tercera paradoja temporal. Durante el primer enfrentamiento entre el viejo Kain y el Raziel espectral, miles de años después de la caída de los Pilares, la espada fue destruida cuando Kain intento usarla para matar a Raziel. Raziel entonces se fusiona con el espíritu de la espada, liberado de esta luego de su destrucción. Ahora, la Soul Reaver serviría como una espada espectral, fusionada a la esencia de Raziel.

Allí, ve como los Sarafan asesinan al viejo vampiro, y se decide a destruirlos, causando nuevamente el loop temporal al que estaba atado su destino –ser absorbido por la espada y cerrar aquel círculo infinito

Es justo en ese momento en el que Kain, aprovechando la paradoja temporal, decide intervenir, en un último intento por recobrar su autentico destino –recobrar su rol como el Vástago del Equilibrio–, retirando la espada del cuerpo de Raziel. Este hecho causa que la corriente del destino se desborde, cambiando la historia por completo y posponiendo el inevitable destino de Raziel…

Poseyendo el cadáver de Moebius –asesinado por segunda vez por Kain–, y se deja atravesar por la Reaver física. Kain intenta evitarlo, pero Raziel se lo impide. Ese es su destino, purificar al Vástago del Equilibrio y volverse su arma. Purificado de la corrupción de Nuprator y armado con una Soul Reaver 3 veces más poderosa, Kain logra derrotar al Dios Antiguo y deja las ruinas de la Ciudadela Vampirica, con una pequeña esperanza de salvar Nosgoth por el sacrificio de Raziel

Después de haber derrotado al Dios Antiguo y de ver los Pilares destruidos Kain va a la Catedral del Averno y deja la Segadora de Almas para que unos años más tarde el Kain joven la recoja y la reclame como suya y así termina el círculo infinito de la Segadora de Alma.

Why bother with a remake? I never understand gamers' obsessions with seeing good games get remade or become movies. The original is fantastic- remakes should be reserved for games which were poor but had a lot of potential. If doing anything with the LoK franchise was possible, they should be continuing the story, not rehashing one we've already seen done perfectly well. You can't repeat something like this and still keep all the magic that the original had...

If they do ever make another LoK game, they could make one of the enemies a "sparkly" vampire. It'd be pathetically weak and easily killable in a variety of gruesome ways. It would be a major selling-point.

I've always held this game (and it's sequel) as being the best example on how to do good dialogue for video games.
