My Dad used to root around the dumpster at our local grocery store. Found a lot of perfectly good stuff --- mostly loaves of bread.

I work as produce manager and even I am appalled by how much I have to throw away. It really makes me cringe. I try to save as much as I can by donating bruised apples and salads. I can't take stuff home for myself unless I pay for it.

dumpster divers AREN'T being greedy. besides, the stores should not have put PERFECTLY GOOD FOOD in the dumpster in the first place. They should have givin it to the local homeless shelter OR to a free food place run by a church.

@jasan509 The laws are different in every county. I only had problems in Clayton where a cop stopped us and told us it was illegal there, I asked if he wanted us to return the trash to the dumpsters and he said "No." So we just left... locally no such troubles.

My newest video has 100's of name brand candy bars in it!!! All of it was perfectly wrapped nothing wrong with them! The Video is called "EPIC Halloween Dumpster Dive". The MASSIVE CANDY BAR HAUL is shown as a clip toward the end of the clip. Try CVS, they have to get rid of product, whatever doesn't sell during clearance goes in the dumpster. I would never go dumpster diving myself, but I have friends that go.

I agree with most except when you say that its stupid for cops to enforce the laws about going through trash. There is a lot of identity theft in the US and a lot is found by going through peoples trash. Yes know people should be shredding everything that has information on it but sometimes you get so much junk mail you just end up tossing it, and that junk mail has your address and name, which is what identity theives need. So while I agree with most, going through trash should not be ignored.

@Noyjeetut it's not really backwards, but it shouldn't benefit large corporations like Walmart. Walmart has been at the top of the fortune 500 list for some years now, so that's one instance of a company I believe shouldn't get those kinds of government benefits.

A lot of places lock dumpsters, and trash still counts as their property, so many places count it the same as stealing from the store.

That's really interesting but sadly... I couldn't do it. I've been conditioned to think that anything that touches a dumspter is automatically bad. Even though I know it's not, i'd have trouble eating any of that food. But good stuff mate!

I used to work for PepsiCo and we used to regularly throw away unopened cans and bottles of soda. The amount of waste out of our facility alone was ENORMOUS. Just as a FYI, soda does has an expiration date and can make you sick if it's too far gone.

My guess about the dumpster laws is the liability issues, if you get hurt or catch some kind of crazy disease you could sue. But you gotta do what you gotta do. We've found perfectly good stuff in dumpsters, fans, heaters, you name it. Stores don't want to deal with the warranty crap so they toss it.

where I live, in the "Coffee Bean" they throw away garbage bags worth of food. But you can't take it because they lock their dumpster.
