I have the stainless steel version of this drum in my vintage 60's Ludwig kit. If anyone is interested in hearing it in a concert hall setting, you can see it by searching youtube for "Ricky Raybine Movie", then choosing "0002". The video was shot from the balcony in the Weill Center, Sheboygan WI.
A great snare - the Stratocaster of the drum world!
I would lke to know what the 400 is actually made of. Some say chrome over aluminium, some say it is made of lud alloy, and you say its chrome over brass?? I WANT THE TRUTH!!
Every time when I hit my early 70ies Supra 400 I shake my head in disbelief...what a fantastic instrument I have...along with '77 Ludwig sky blue pearl super classics..:)
Am I wrong to say that it is quite unusual for a Blue/Olive badge Supraphonic to be Chrome Over Brass? (especially the B/O badge with the rounded corners) Are you sure is it CoB, not Chrome over Luddalloy (i.e. Chrome over Aluminium)?
@lovethebluessr the blue olive badge on the newer supras denotes factory "B" stock, which means that the drum has been deemed by factory QC as such. this doesn't mean the drum is defective, as you can hear and see from the video, but only that somewhere on the drum is a blemish of some sort. when they sell them as B stock, the price is typically lower, but you will never be made aware of such a "blemish" unless you search the drum for it. sometimes, none can really ever be found.
@edizzle03 Thanks, mate. Yes, I can see how the badge has been cut off so the part where the serial number would be is not there, hence B stock. But surely it didn't take you 12 months to think of something to reply with? (Just kidding ;-)
slingerland has different rim and shell is different.,and result is different sound, but not too much.if you want that sound get this type of snare, but slingerland is also perfect snare.
mine is a '73 and i drool everytime i play it !! it sounds great in almost every live venue, be it a small club, pub or reception hall or huge outdoor stage .the thing is a miracle !!
Seriously, every drum on every video you have sounds amazing...and I suspect it has a lot to do with how you tune your drums. Would you consider doing a tuning video? I'd kill for that snare sound, and I'd love to see your technique!
I wanna get advise frmo everyone. Which one satisfies you guys more? 6.5 or 5.5? I own the first one, and its fantastic. I just want to know what everyone thinks of the 5.5
thumbs up if youre watching this by the Matt helders drum kit :S

The 400 does not notate the shell material, rather LB or LM.
LB400 is chrome over brass shell. LM400 is a steel shell.
memphisdrumshop 2 years ago
@memphisdrumshop LM400 is a aluminium shell.
niceguy1312 1 year ago 2
@niceguy1312 We stand corrected. The LM400 is a chrome plated aluminum drum. Thanks!

perfect video, im looking for a nicer snare than the stock i have. So this one seems good, any suggestions for $400 14" funk snares?
justsayelectric 2 years ago
Is there any difference in sound with new 400 and say 60's 70's vintage cos the new ones are like ££££££'s more!?
splashy44 2 years ago
@splashy44
the difference is that meanwhile these snares have become legend!
I have tried only a new one... but people who have tried both say they don't sound exactly the same... but both tremendously good.

This is a new Blue/Olive Badge Chrome Over Brass. It is the same as a Keystone Badge Black Beauty, but with a Blue/Olive Badge.

OK, thanks. Ludwig's badges confuse me.

does the blue olive badge separate this from a regular ludwig badge?
i am looking into a vintage supraphonic and saw both a blue olive badge one and a regular one
is there a difference?
guitarshredda2 2 years ago
I'm not sure about the vintage drums, but the only difference on the new snare drums is the badge.

is that REMO batter head?.
aso209 2 years ago
It is a coated Ludwig Weather Master head. It's very much like a Remo Coated Ambassador.
memphisdrumshop 2 years ago
how do you tune this kind of drum? which pitch height or note ?
Madispoiss79 2 years ago
Tight bottom head and semi-tight top head. Tune the top to the sound you like.
memphisdrumshop 2 years ago
Well..they are all brass snares...they should be doing a lm400 or 402

I got the same snare and I love it. Sounds perfect.
Other snare that I enjoy a lot is pearl vinnie paul signature snare. 100% maple, 14 x 8. It provides a fat and loud sound.
