Now that's a real engine! It's absolutely incredible what those engineers could achieve 5 decades ago with no CAD/CAM or anything to help predict how an engine should work. A compression ratio of 13.5:1 is much higher than any production petrol engine today can give. Forget about the single figure fuel economy, this is how an engine should perform and SOUND.
Hey, hust wondering what kind of cam shaft you have in there. Original max wedge cam or something different? It'd be great if you could get some specs on it because I'm looking to get the same kind of sound out of my race motor.
great video! i'm glad to see your engine stand has motor mount supports. very professional looking. i saw some guy on another vid w/sbc 400 cu.in. on a stand only mounted by the bellhousing flange.when he revved it up, the whole thing almost fell over. no supports at the base, either. your setup is well done!
This is true. I know the hemi holds well to bragging rights, but I don't suppose you know a way to bring up the torque in the 426? I guess a higher compression would help. But in general that is accurate & logical.
I have a couple of questions for you. Just curious on the Camshaft specs? and Brand? How much duration @ .050? lift? What type of pistons were you running? were they flat top or dome? and last but not least is what head castings do you have? Thanks, John
first of...awesome! second...did you build the test stand with certain blueprints? also how much total do you have into the stand? just wondering as I will be building one for my 440 to test
I built it out of my head to what seemed right/necessary to me. I think I figured I had about $500 in it all done. Metal alone maybe $100 but the big ticket items I didn't plan on were good casters, about $100 alone, fuel tank $100, and new temp gauge. I had the MSD and other gauges from past hot rods. Also went with stainless for the gauge panel, and quality toggle/ignition switches from summit. It can be done for cheaper if you want to omit some luxury's. Good luck, if I can help let me know.
Those fucking Max Wedges rock, i had one in my 27 foot motor home. It had a cracked manifold and the points were "BURNED CLEAR IN HALF" and it still did 70 miles an hour over the Eisenhower tunnel on my way to Cali!! (with a slight overheating, very slight) That's a 6% grade!!!! Only vehicles that passed me, a dodge ram with a Cums diesel. When i fixed the manifold and points i passed even the Cums LOL It was a bad ass engine!! Gawd i miss it!!
16.5 was a good price

They(383,440,426) would all sound about the same in a stock build, with open headers like the 413 here.

This sounds beastly!!!!!
Would the 440 6pack Or 426 hemi sound different?
