You mean Dalai's desire of having his private army in Tibet, claiming the Chinese provinces outside the Tibet plateau which never was under the Tibetan theocratic control, and attempting to drive out all the non-Tibetans from the area? I'm not naive to think Dalai want nothing more than independence... As a Tibetan, he must really want independence, but being realistic means he can't demand that much from the current situation. His best shot is first returning to Tibet at all costs. Once there, he can work his next step to unite all the Tibetans both in Tibet and in the provinces around. Would any Tibetan want complete independence? most probably so. But, when the Dalai Lama and most Tibetans examine the issue- they have deduced what is most important are the fundamental human needs of self-determination ,humane values, cultural preservation, and religious freedoms. It's so upsetting that you're proud of your country's genocide against the Tibetan People, a people who have their own culture and had their own nation before it was stolen by the Chinese government in 1952. No one in the United States denies the horrible, terrible things that our government, and our ancestors have done in the past, and even the horrible things that they (and sometimes we) are doing now. I wish the Chinese people would just do the same.

Tibet is part of China for 700 years. All countries in this world recognize that, including your bush. Native Indian has their own culture and had their own nation before it was stolen by white. Dalai Lama always insists preservation of Tibetan culture, what's Tibetan culture ? A culture has him as the centre of everything, he's the savior, he's the only one that can bring Tibetan to enlightenment, without him Tibetan would be terribly miserable...in front of the western audiance he preach Buddha's buddhism, but the truth is that Lamaism is very different from Buddhism, David Koresh also preach gospels too, however the US gov. decicded to eradicate him, and his group.

If Dalai is really being realistic, then he shouldn't go too far:
He claims Qinghai, Sichuan, Yunnan which never were parts of his Tibet, together they compose 1/4 of China's territory;
He want to remove PLA from these areas. If he really thinks Tibet is a part of China, he shouldn't do so;
He want to remove every non-Tibetans from Tibet. But Tibet has 13 other minorities. Being oppressed doesn't mean you can oppress others;

autonomy isn't independence. China's strength will not allow 'US-military bases' and issues regarding foreign affairs and military protection would still be in the hands of CCP under a negotiated agreement.

The Dalai Lama has made admissions that his prior government in Tibet needed reforms and there were some injustices. Yes, he is compassionate and does truly care about Tibet. At least most Tibetans think so.

chaos has already been created through CCP's brutally heavy-handed and uncompromising policies in Tibet. the Dalai Lama said if allowed to return to Tibet, he would not be a politician. Safegaurds can legally be put in place to prevent this or theocracy. A genuine mutual agreement would bring about true unity and stability because not only would CCP control their bodies, but Tibetans would unify psychologically also. He cares more about his image is a silly assumption.

The Dalai Lama continually supports and works to heal those Tibetans whom escape Tibet. He also continually speaks on behalf of the common Tibetans and humane treatment of all Tibetans and Chinese. He advocates genuine autonomy and humane values- not choas or independence. Get real?

Tibetans were willing to take any help against so large an occupying force, and the CIA's view of Tibet's utility in a global war against communism doesn't detract from the legitimacy of the Tibetan cause. The elites of the US and other liberal democracies now prioritize trade with China, and much of their pressure to act on Tibet comes from grassroots public sympathy.

Former CIA agents Kenneth Knaus and Tom Laird have both written books on the CIA's involvement in the Tibetan guerilla resistance movement, which movement was never controlled by the pacifistic Dalai Lama.

yeah, I agree. Historically, CCTV has only shown the truth and all sides of the story in order to be objective. They don't censor at all, or try to produce an illusion. As a matter of fact, I've seen on CCTV photos of protestors in near Tongkhor Monastery in Kardze County on 3 April 2008. But, I won't believe it! it is a lie! My pride will never let me believe CCP could be inhumane, historically they have been the most enlightened humane, and fair minded government on earth.

Genuine autonomy? You mean Dalai's desire of having his private army in Tibet, claiming the Chinese provinces outside the Tibet plateau which never was under the Tibetan theocratic control, and attempting to drive out all the non-Tibetans from the area? Tibet plateau isn't just the ancient home of Tibetans, but 13 ethnic groups, most of them minorities. Dalai may using the word "autonomy", but his demands smell like "independence".

The Dalai Lama has repeatedly called for genuine autonomy and unification through peaceful agreement. He has great influence over Tibetans and CCP would be wise to use that.

I'm not naive to think Dalai want nothing more than independence... As a Tibetan, he must really want independence, but being realistic means he can't demand that much from the current situation. His best shot is first returning to Tibet at all costs. Once there, he can work his next step to unite all the Tibetans both in Tibet and in the provinces around. His ultimate goal is still independence.

Would any Tibetan want complete independence? most probably so. But, when the Dalai Lama and most Tibetans examine the issue- they have deduced what is most important are the fundamental human needs of self-determination ,humane values, cultural preservation, and religious freedoms. The Dalai Lama isn't so unrealistic to think independence is more important and would allow CCP safe gaurds to ensure that.

Put all political hypes aside, just looking purely from the perspective of Buddhism as a religion, Tibetans' Buddhism believe Dalai Lama is the 14th reincarnation of an enlightened Buddha (he's the most supreme one, there're many others 'living buddhas' renicarnated among Tibetans), what does it mean to be an enlightened one ? when he basically went thru the same learning curve over again and again each time he reincarnated ? what's the difference between being enlightened and unenlightened ?

I am a Chinese, and I am worrying that my government is not telling the truth about Tibet. Why would they hate us so much? There must be a reason. They are not mad people. And the Dalai Lama, is he really a terrorist? Are we wrong? Maybe we should start reading and listening to other sources, other than the government propaganda. Maybe we are acting like fools, only believing what we are told. How can we make Tibet a peaceful and prosperous part of China?

The reason why Tibetans rioted is probably food unaffordable; and this might be caused by the corrupt officials who sidelined the poor tibetans for their own greed.
Tibetans are the likes of Chinese and tend to do unto others what they want others to do to them. Hence, it is a serious problem existing, and the Chinese government needs to take care of the poor tibetans first by allow their Tibetans to be their ruler instead of a communist official.
