I've read many critic reviews that thought the director's asinine twisted ending (hong lim's looking at the king) was wrong and completely unnecessary to an otherwise excellent film.
The Chief bodyguard understood and was greatly touched by the Kings intention of pretending that the Queen was executed with the maid's head on a stake & satchet. Initially, Chief didnt love King. As per said when a small boy, he would live & die for King which caused King to love him instantly. Whatever quality time spent and sex was just service to the King. This was also offered by the Sub Chief of guards one night when Chief was MIA. Chief finally realized King's true luv & appreciated it.
I completely felt bad for the Queen. She was basically a toy, a fish in their little pond. The King did not love her nor be with her, then the King's lover comes along and gives her what she is missing and what she longed for, only to know that him and the king love each other as well as her.
Poor King! I watched the film and realized that although he was forceful and hot headed, he was the true tragic hero of the movie. Job well done Joo Jin Mo!
At first I thought that hon lim and the queen were really in love, but the ending made me think a lot. I believe that hong lim in reality loved the king but the passion for the queen was really strong, he was become a man with her. During the fight hong lim accidentally destroyed the painting and seen as the king was shocked he understood that love was his weakness. So when the king asked him "did you ever felt even only a time that I was your love?" he said no and had the chanse to kill him.

The king did not love her in a romantically way, so she switched her emotions to Hong Lima. This story is about 3 souls holding into each other and refusing to let go the other one. Every one of them was punished for their mistakes. you should not hate neither of them
