  • I'm not Jewish, but I love this film so much, one of my favorite musicals time. But I can relate also: My parents would not any longer if I married a non-Greek Orthodox Christian. I do not mind though. I'm sure someone will come along that I could love.

  • I read the comments; people aren't getting it. For example, suppose you belong to a little group; my group tells you, "We'll 'let' you become full fledged citizens...all you have to do is 'fit in'. Give up all your traditions, your language, your history."

And later, I renege. "We changed our mind. You'll always be scum, no matter what you do. In fact, we reserve the right to take your property, your kids, your lives. And you can't do squat about it."

I don't blame 'em for being paranoid.

  • 02:40 that hollow stare; those haunting eyes

  • I admit it I cried when I saw this

  • True crisis of faith for Tevye. You knew this was coming after his earlier clash with Chava over it. Gut wrenching in the extreme because he cannot abandon the faith that has always guided him and his people, yet he can never stop loving Chava as a father. Powerful stuff!

  • He seems like a good looking gentile Aryan Man , why has her Father got such a problem, to me this is the most memorable part of the film , the Jews in those days seemed very insular , a lot of them still are , Religion can be a force for good , but it also can cause such misery

  • Joseph married a gentile, so did Moses, and they are still viewed as great men in both Jewish and Christian faiths. I don't know why Chava's family was making such a big deal about this! Interracial marriages rule!!! :)

  • Doesn't he realize he can still accept his daughter's decision and still remain loyal to his faith?

  • Hands down, one of the best scenes in film history.

  • He has only one hand

  • On the other hand.... No. There is no other hand. NO! NO! NO!

  • Chills, literally. I have goosebumps, one of my bestfriends is playing Chava, and I'm Tzeitel.

  • I'm on Tevye's side, if he was willing to convert then I might think about it.

  • @Lar0sa1 if he were converting just for marriage then he's not really acepting her heritage is he

  • I love the symbolism around @2:20 with the Fiddler representing tradition but her love pulling her away. This whole scene is just so sad...I REALLY love Fiddler of the Roof as a play and a movie.

  • wow I still to this day can't watch this scene without crying.

  • He was pushed to his limits.. It's so sad really. Such a breathtaking scene, I remember watching this in Religion class. How sad... But, really.. I feel for Topal just as I feel for Chava. Topal sure has a lot of wrinkles under his eyes but it gives to the story.. I mean, is he SUPPOSED to be young looking?

  • Fuck off we are people. no more racists words pls.

  • @islander658 I think Germany had the right idea..... when they made it illegal to say hate speech back in the 80s. :) bet I surprised all of y'all. In all seriousness tho, racism is stupid. Only idiots are racist, and they all eserve a small kick in the shins.

  • I love how after he rejects his daughters pleas, Tveye picks up his wagon, symbolizing his life's burdens and pushes it away leaving his daughter empty handed, behind him, reaching for something she's lost.

  • lol the youngest to daughters are going to try to marry a black man and a woman.

  • to all you Religeous people arguing heres my take on it Fuck Religeon Period thats why i am an Athiest . now let enjoy the movie .

  • Chava is played by Topol's real life daughter.

  • @waitingformypopcorn Really? ooooh cool!!

  • This part with the three daughters dancing is my favorite part.... so bittersweet.

  • This is the saddest part of the movie for me, as my family went thro the exact same thing, with my grandfather denying my mother n my dad n me. In his eyes we truly r dead to him, said so himself

  • I am sobbing!

  • I think there should have been a song about Tevye and the Constable's friendship. And it should have started at 7:52 with Tevye singing, "Do you?"

And it could be about them wanting to be understood.

  • I like this clip. But if feel a bit sadistic by clicking like

  • Poor Chava.

  • oh this movie hurts my heart so much......

  • Thumbs up if you've ever had this basically happen to you... Hubby and I are quite happy now, and things cooled down with the relatives, but... wow. I know how you feel, Chava.

  • @Emirichan317 this happened to my grandfather, but the other way around obviously. its very sad how religions can ostracize someone for marrying outside the faith. And it is the religion. It's often written into the holy books. :/

  • Oh religion.... lolol.

  • thats wat u get 4 shooting out of ur league Chava

  • 02:53 : Poor Tevye looks so sad. It makes you feel like standing near him and trying to say something to confort him.

  • 01:32 : Who's the woman walking toward the right side of the screen, as two others enter by the left ?

  • @Briselance Her mother, Golde, I think.

  • Violin at 2:12 so beautiful <3

  • 8:23 i thought he was going to pull out a gun

  • Chava was the ugliest daughter

  • @flowerpower119

Well, for the ugliest of Tevye and Golde's daughters, she sure is still pretty. If you like redheads, that is. ^^

  • @Briselance meh.. i guess. she's just not as attractive as the others,

  • @flowerpower119

Sure. All a matter of tastes and all.

  • @Briselance amen

  • I love his On the other hand moments!! lol

  • 8:52 I HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!!!!!

cracks me up, he acts so childish ripping the paper away lol

  • NO NO NO NO PAPA STOP NO NO!!!!! LOL

  • I think people forget that without all of the religions the world would be such a boring place. People's customs, folk tales, etc make every people very different and interesting :) Our cultures are what define us. In the end a bad person is a bad person. Even if someone wasn't religious, if they were evil enough they could back their logic with something other than religion if they tried. It's called being an ignorant asshole.

  • @TheMajesticPigeon. we could easily still have those things without religion.

  • @xoxDiamante

Sure our folklores, tales, etc. aren't all religious. But have you ever considered what part of it do we owe to religions, whether ancient or current, still practised or forgotten, polytheistic, monotheistic, pagan ?

For example, in Europe, take the legend of the Knights of the Round Table. It has obvious traces of religion in it. Not to mention the local, often not well-known, legends and anecdotes, like the "Saints de Glaces" in France.

  • it's so sad these mass evictions were done to our people throughout history and nowadays you could cut and paste this dialogue, only replace the russians with israeli settlers and us jews with palestinians. "get out in 3 days, or we'll bulldoze your homes." :( we should know better!

  • One of the greatest scenes in any musical ever.

  • As soon as you can rationalize in your head not speaking or seeing your own family...something has gone extremely wrong.

  • Fun Fact: the meaning of the fiddler on the roof is to compare the difficulty in playing a fiddle while balanced on a roof with the struggle to maintain the jewish culture while having no set home/country, constantly being pushed out of every country they lived in.

  • @kevincool100 ikr. u can def see the sadness in his eyes

  • You've got to love Tevye's "On the other hand" bits...

  • She loved him. He should've just accepted that. now, what? Are you just gonna cry about it? OMG SHE RETURNS OUT OF NO WHERE! She loves you you idiot! And you decide to yell "NO!" at her poor little face. MY GRRR FACE IS ON NOW! >.<

"My daughter is dead." ugh, who evil could he be?

  • @spideria120 It's not necessarily evil. It's wrong, it's sad, but that was the tradition. If you inter-married, you were excommunicated. In Orthodox communities today they will mourn the "death" of a family member if they intermarry. It's a horrible thing to think about, but it wasn't just him. The point is that his tradition couldn't allow for something so "extreme". The way things were in Tsarist Russia, it was hard to trust anyone, especially non-Jews.

  • on the closeup on Tevye's face......i just noticed how ugly he was......seriously....still sad though

  • @kevincool100 he was NOT ugly!

  • It's so sad how religion can tear families apart like this.

  • @mchapin86 It wasn't just religion... It was heritage, lifestyle, beliefs, hopes, dreams... The way things were and supposed to be. It was everything and Chava rejected all of it. How could Tevye understand that?

  • @mchapin86 religion tears people apart, God brings people together :)

  • @mchapin86 religion isnt a club to some people, and if you truly look into the religions, families should not be torn up like this, so this is their mistake not the religion's.

  • @snakedemon11 Not that I don't completely agree, but this is historically accurate. Unless the other person converted (and then even in only the most liberal households), any jew and christian who were married would be cast out from BOTH of their families. And it is more correct to the source material, which was written for jewish people about sticking to tradition as much as you can despite all the changes going on.

  • @ShadeStar64 oh yeah i kno that, no i was just sort of defending religion by making it clear that this was never supposed to be the way. especially for christians. if my children married or did something counter to our religion i would love and accept them because thats how we are to live our lives. rejection and a hard heart are the worst sins. i dont know about others but i read my doctrine. I agree that this is historically accurate definatly, no one has a right to outcast others

  • @mchapin86 That's like saying it's so sad how love can tear families apart like this.

  • @mchapin86 You've missed the point entirely....

  • this is one of the most heartbreaking beautiful moments - thank you so much for posting

  • poor girl :(

  • What a beautiful scene! Those girls dancing on the plain! I think Tevye is a libra. He is always poising; considering the different sides of a question.

  • This is sad ;( too bad that sherriff guy is so spineless..

  • @bridgetvdp22 I completely agree, but if he didnt do the job, he would probably have been shot and someone else would have done it, and likely more viciously. At least this sherrif could make a small attempt at kindness, useless tho it may be when people are being forced out of their homes

  • @Bregmaiden Actually I think he was very useful. I read online that crashing weddings and stuff often leads to rape and casualties. In comparison, a few bruises and broken plates is a minor insult. Turning people out of their homes might seem bad, but he could easily have just stormed the area and taken stuff for himself instead of allowing the villagers to sell their things first as the order commanded—the Russians probably wouldn't care to know the difference in that setting.

  • The whole dance sequence, where first Tseitel dances off with Motel, and Hodel dances away with Perchik, and then up strolls Fiedka, with Chava looking from him to the fiddler. That whole sequence was brilliantly done and marvellously touching.

  • @Lamporre I know!!!! I loved that part! I got goosebumps just watching it :)

  • @Lamporre

Just another time when the fiddler represents the Jewish faith and the Jewish spirit.

  • i love the Chava ballet sequence i wanna cry each time

  • Hear him sing this and tell me he doesn't love his daughter. He's probably just deeply hurt and disapointed she'd run off with some goy boy. It's depressing to say the least, but I feel just as bad for the father as for the daughter.

  • this part makes me sooo sad :'(

  • wu. heartbreak.

  • this guy's thought process is more extream than Scrubs' JD's

  • That was really, really sad. : (

  • So heartbreaking when he says "NO! NO! NO!" and she breaks down crying on her knees. So sad that her mom and sisters have to think of her as being dead.

  • WHY WON"T EVERYONE STOP TALKING ABOUT THIS IN A RELIGIOUS SENSE AND ENJOY THE MOVIE?????????????????????????????

  • such emotion in those eyes 2:40-50

  • Religion is of course good. The Jewish way of life is wonderful and my Catholic way of life of love and hard work comes from the Jewish faith. Both can live together in harmony and happiness.

  • why didnt chava husband convert?

  • @whimisicalbliss Because he shouldn't have to. The point is that Chava and Fyetka (sp?) should be able to marry each other because of their love, not their religion.

  • @VampireUnicorn24601 I could just as easily say that the point is that once one tradition is broken, all of them unravel and a way of life is lost. But really the point is that you can look at this from and relate to both sides of the issue. As much as it hurts one, it hurts the other.

  • he's such a lovely man

  • WE ARE ALL PEOPLE! The world would be so much better a place without religion. Yes, it's a comfort to people, but it is the biggest cause of all the wars, the genocide, the hatred, the violence, the sadness that has been going on since the beginning of time. It tells us to love each other, but it tears apart families and makes people hate! It's not worth it!

  • @oliviathefolkie Religion is not the cause, but Satan is.And he tires to destroy God and man's relationship with what people call religion.Yes,the Ten Commandments are good, and the Bible is true. But if you read in the Bible, you will see that Jesus broke many rules, and offended people's religious spirits.Christianity is meant to be a living, breathing relationship with God,Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.Where you learn and grow and love and are free. And he wants you free, because he loves you.

  • @LovesNeverEnding If He loves you, then why do people claim that he hates other people, and massacre them because of it?

  • @oliviathefolkie Because that's part of satan's way.he gets people deceived and to thinking that because that they hate someone, they can blame God for it,and kill the people.Such as hilter, that was one of the most demonic, ungodly things that has ever happened in history.God hates all of satan's doings, and there are many verses in the Bible about relieving the oppressed, and setting the captives free.

  • @LovesNeverEnding Fair enough. I'm still an agnostic - haven't changed my mind about that, but you argued your point fairly well, as I believe, did I. I'm glad religion is a comfort to some people, but I'm very happy living my own life without it. I wish you the best in life.

  • @LovesNeverEnding In the eyes of many religous leaders, Jesus broke many laws. But, we both know that's not true. He forfilled them.

  • @shadowfox1383 Yeah,that's what I meant. :)

  • @LovesNeverEnding Jesus said it wasn't for him to void the law, but to fulfill it, meaning to explain its purpose. There is the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. Jesus ministry was about, how, in God's eyes, how we treat each other as fellow aspects of divine creation, equally loved by God, is more important than anything else we, as human's, can do. A lot of people who claim to be Christians seem to forget this.

  • Can't the Fiddler see he's ruining a great romantic moment for Chava and Fyedka?!

  • @AForceOfHobbit Of coarse he can he is just there to be annoying and obnoxious

  • This is one of my favourite films (L)

  • so sad at the beginning of the scene. but i love the whole part where yenke tries to match the two younger daughters with the two boys.

  • 2:18 - 2:44 mixed feelings, so romantic and sad

  • This is my favourite piece of music in the film. It's so gentle and sad. Also, a 'creepy fiddler' or not, I wish I could play my violin like that. Isaac Stern was phenomenal.

  • @miriamnz

I didn't realize that the fiddler was Isaac Stern...but yes, I would love to play with that passion as well, though I only play the cello, not the violin.

  • This creepy fiddler is probably the reason why spontaneous agile fiddling never caught on in America.

  • the fiddler represents her past and lke all her tradditions and rules and stuff like that

  • the fiddler represents tradition

  • Yeah I would probably choose the hot Russian over the slightly creepy fiddler too...

  • who wouldnt if they're honest

  • i was almost shprintze, but someone dropped out the play so i became chava, and then the drama teacher said i was better than that so now im hodel. lol i changed characters 3 times but for the 1 day that i was chava i was proud to have my own sequence

  • the ending of this movie is terrible, its kind of what happened to the church ya know destroying everything jewish...geez

  • All he has is his tradition. He lived for it all his life and now it's crumbling before him. You couldn't honestly expect him to give in to all the demands. It would make his entire life obsolete.

  • "There is no other hand!"

The one line that has always stuck out to me, because it's so heartbreaking.

  • @hanniballecter3 Honestly, I have to say that I agree with the dad here.

  • this is a beautiful dance. i love it.

  • That dance is beautiful..

  • i always cry when i watch this

  • This breaks my heart every time....
