  • Roysterdoyster thou art speaking via forked tongue through thy rectum.1979 was the Live 79/Levitation tour. The Hawklords 78 Psi Power tour was the last full one to feature Calvert, one of my all time Rock'n'Roll heroes. Saw it at Leicester, one of the best rock'n'roll shows I've seen, and trust me I've seen a few!

  • the late Robert Calvert, Hawkwind vocals writer and poet,,, r i p Bob Calvert

  • Hawkwind Lite? Who the fucks the singer? Of which incantation is this??? Lemmy got off right!

  • @LabiaLicker1 Robert Calvert is the singer, the guy who wrote silver machine

  • I've just got goose bumps!!! This was the 1st time I ever saw Hawkwind. Astounding Sounds, amazing music!! Calvert was a genius.

  • @elfenlied1998 the Quark Strangeness Tour 1979,,, was the first time i saw HAWKWIND live. Sheffield City Hall.. i had been buying their albums for many years before then,, but never had the chance to see them

  • This was in that confusing pre-punk time when Hammill, Hawkwind and the Pink Fairies were making proto-punk records....Marc loved that stuff. I saw him on his last tour, supported by The Damned.

It's difficult to imagine anyone but Marc bringing us Calvert, The Jam and Eddie And The Hot Rods on a tea-time kids TV show.

  • @dual506 "punk" song about quarks? :D ;)

  • @Featinwe Lol...totally agree :-)

Almost as punk as The Clash being the middle class sons of teachers and diplomats but putting on Mockney accents like Nigel Kennedy.

Even at the age of 16 I used to wonder how punks who lived on the streets could afford a vintage Rickenbacker bass lol

Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers both had long careers as prog rockers before appearing from nowhere as punky new-wavers.

With hindsight, even Twink turned out to be the vocalist with the Baker-Gurvitz Army lol

  • @dual506 I don't mind that actually... it simply proves Hawkwind to be amazing band playing so diverse music. And the only one(?) playing space-punk :D

  • @Featinwe Hawkwind have been outside of every movement....never really prog or rock or new wave or glam, but with elements of all.

    They are glorious live.

  • Its so badly ad libbed you think, Bob doesen't even try to hide his ability to play. That being said its nice to have any footage from this era. Now for those HAWKLORDS performances,...

  • die live version auf der buisnesstripp anhörn

  • ..from Margate...via the stars...

  • Love the cartoon crowd intros were the girl front right seems to be having a seizure!

  • A quark a fundamental constituent of matter...

  • Robert Calvert... let me count the ways I love you. Taken far too soon from us. RIP, brother. X

  • The lyrics to this song always makes me laugh with their enjoyable absurdity.

  • "Quark.Strangeness & Charm"such a CLASSIC album.Robert Calvert's brave move to lead Hawkwind through the "punk" years.

What the fuck's Marco babblin'on about? make your mind up dude...it's Hawkwind.

Unless there was a performance with "Sir" Bob Geldof "being very brave with a paraguin".

  • wheres dave brock??

  • @FrogsOnWeed Apparently the baron had a problem with Bolan and wouldn't appear.

  • @FrogsOnWeed, Apparently, Dave Brock’s car accidentally on purpose broke down!

  • Set phasers to fuzz out brillance!

  • this era reigns - as it were - on point - all phasers phase - we love you all - from houston to san francisco to the reagan youth - you are all daughters of tha quark - and marc! xo! chemical mange. 2011

  • shit... i remember this.. im gettin old..great track!

  • Ahhh. So THAT'S Robert Calvert.

  • im afraid this isnt that great, as much as i do apreciate Bob

  • Calvert saved the band after Lemmy's unfortunate departure, he took them in a new direction maintaining musical appeal at a time when early 70's bands were being derided and cast aside. Lemmy was a huge loss , Calvert knew this and restarted the engines for Hawkwind, Brock was no more than a sideman in this period leaving the creativity to Calvert. It was an amazing 4 year period and ultimately saved Hawkwind from falling away into obscurity.

  • Simon King.. one of the coolest and most underrated members of Hawkwind.. I wonder what's become of him.. is he alive?

  • @mustaba1234 Just wanted to lead a quiet life as a bin man for one of the inner London boroughs I think.

  • I bloody LOVE this version! I have very happy memories of being parked in front of Marc's show as a kid - much more fun than Cheggars Plays Pop & Get It Together (!) , no wonder I turned out so weird...

  • Have to agree when you read Lemmy's autobiography. No ghostwriters there! Loved the band when they played Liverpool in the 60's and 70's, but missed all the crap. Does it matter?

"Is it called "Hawk"? What a pillock.

  • @MrMeddled I am more inclined to believe the former with a nod towards Brock saying about not doing a trivial tv programme so that he had a "valid excuse" not to do it. He is and always has been and always will be a grumpy old control freak.

  • 5 people have no quark, strangeness OR charm.

  • Calvert's hawk is either amazingly well trained or else hypnotized by its master's unparalleled genius.

  • ALWAYS AND FOREVER HAWKWIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm so glad that the internet allows people to preserve videos like this, so that people like me (born after this bands prime) can enjoy these videos.

  • Awesome video! Thanks!!

  • Fantastic Thanks, I have to come hear often to get my fix of Calvert.

Please someone find and upload some more Calvert with HW, there must be some more somewhere...???

  • Love the phaser on the keys...... Pricelessssssss

  • cease thy bending of mine cranium

  • brilliant

  • cool, but where's Dave?

  • @makourass Hawkwinf had/have many differnet singers mate not just Captain Brock., this is the legend the was Robert (Bob) Calvert Rip Bob see u on the cosmic highway someday ;D

  • @makourass

The story I read was that Dave Brock did not want to mime the song and so he said that he had car trouble and couldn't make it to the show.

  • @prokesuk

Love this band but.......Well Brock was wrong wasn't he. Brock is so full of SHIT they didn't mime this it was live, If it was mimed then Brock's vocals would have been over Calvert's performance.

  • @OrpheusIsThe1

It was an amusing story that I read. Amazing that it has aroused such hostility in you. As for this performance, the quality is not the best so it is hard to tell what is going on. However, it is obvious that it is live. I mean, the mitt and bird prop on his right hand that does not seem to affect his guitar playing are proof that they are actually playing. You did notice that, right? Yeah. ok. :)

  • @prokesuk No hostility intended Just that I and a lot of other people think Dave Brock is a complete and utter twat who he talks a load of bollocks most the time these days. Gone are the origins of HWs ethics to play for as many people as possible charging as little as possible Gone are most of the free gigs. As with all the other corporate wankers it's now about MONEY with Brock. That's why they sound just like any other band now. No feeling and soul left in the group all sucked out by Brock

  • @OrpheusIsThe1I agree who gives a crap about brock & did Hawkwind get any better after Levitation?...Personally no. As much I enjoy the UA 1969-75 stuff, the Calvert charisma stuff is the one for me

  • Marc's a quark!

  • Comment removed

  • i saw quark at sheffield city hall. amazing

  • @Roysterdoyster98: I saw the Quark, Strangeness show at Hammersmith Odeon. I've still got the programme and ticket. I was tempted to sell them on eBay a few months ago but f*** it, they're worth more as a memory than an extra tenner in my dwindling bank account!!

  • wolverhampton civic hall 1978 the late great bob calvert brilliant!

  • Classic hawkwind. Like the better end of New Romantic. If only there was more :(

  • proto punk

  • Top to see after all these years. Bob is still god. But to respond to other peoples comments about Brock and Bolan, I Dunno, there are nemerous photos of Marc playing a guitar with the Doremi sticker on it!! respect poss? AlexP

  • It sounds live but Calvert is not playing that guitar and neither is the hawk attached to his arm, so who is?

  • @quigglesquaggs Calvert was miming, pretending to play Brock's guitar parts to the song. Brock refused to appear mainly because he thought going on T.V. (especially the Marc show) was too much of a pop star thing to do. And the Hawk was one of Calvert's endless props.

  • This is the only footage of Calvert performing (apart from the Urban Guerilla mash-up video) that seems to be available....would like to see more...

  • how come in all our far reaching reach catalog of songs is this the only live one of Calvert - the performing artistic director of Hawkwind???

  • @crannogdolmen There is a lot of audio stuff featuring Calvert (on the Space Ritual, for example) but very little video. I also can't find a photo of Calvert with the other members of the band anywhere....

  • Is the singer Robert Calvert?

  • also at this point hawkwind were on the verge of a major falling out between brock and calvert

  • @markgimp2000 well,Dave and Bob formed the hawklords the following year(78)...so i dont think that was the case, here (77).I read that 1- Dave didnt want to mime, and also 2- he had fallen out with mr bolan a few years earlier. The recording here was done the day before(with Dave) and therefore differs from the album vsn.:)

  • Brock`s absence is due to his belief that tv appearances indicated "selling out"

  • @PXR05 Dave didnt want to "mime"..same reason they wouldnt appear on TOTP.He also didnt get on with Bolan..but he did play on this "pre-show recording",(it differs from the album vsn.)

  • love it no x factor shite here

  • WoW This is Great!!!

  • Classic

  • u idiots this song is ace

sometimes theres lots of different versions of the same songs

this band and song kicks ass and if u ever learn how to write a tune i bet its not even half as good

  • not to many videos these days ov bob calvert singing with hawkwind

  • totally great - but where is Brock?

  • Calvert was a smart guy but this song is historically inaccurate- Eistein did just fine with the ladies...

  • uchudaikaiju "This song is historically inaccurate" LOL! Yeah, and Einstein's theories had a shit bass-line.

  • I'm sorry, I love Hawkwind, and have no problem with Nik Turner, but this is just not that good...

  • I wonder how many people know what this song is really about?-yes, a quark does show strangeness and charm!

  • Nice song.

  • Totally superb in so many ways!!

  • A classic from an under-rated period of Hawkwind.

  • @Kevynuk every period of Hawkwind was under-rated in the US

  • I wonder if Steve Strange's image was prototyped from Bob Calvert.

  • My favorite morph of Hawkwind.Bob Calvert was really something else with them...but I can't say he was as good with Starfighters.

  • Great clip of Calvert era Hawkwind here, shame no Dave Brock, but he had a long running feud with Marc Bolan, that's why he's not on this clip (you can readabout it in the Hawkwind book)

  • Miss both of you.

  • Have you seen Wishbone Ash they were another like Hawkwind during that period

  • @beginization Yes I've seen them. No they weren't.

  • @vambo23

what happen to Dave Brock the original singer before this guy. this guys great too but I have always wondered why he went.

  • @beginization He didn't. Dave Brock didn't want to lip-sync. Exactly what they did on this show. Dave Brock and Bob Calvert wrote many of the songs together. Dave Brock never left and is the only remaining original member to this day.

  • hi thats good then as I thought calvet was a new member but which one is dave brock and why does he not sing anymore as he has a great voice,

  • He does still sing. They just saw who sounded better on certain songs. Bob Calvert wasn't really in the band very long but he only sang and songwrote so he was the main vocalist while he was in the band. He'd have nothing to do other wise. Dave Brock still sang backing on most of the songs though.

  • hi Can you upload any songs from there first album Age of reason I think it was called, it had weid little snakes with 2 legs and leaves on cover, it was made for trippers.

  • GREAT GREAT GREAT and more GREAT

  • this was new wave before new wave.

  • @jasonjarvis1988 Michael Moorcock did say the only difference between Hawkwind and punk was the haircuts...

  • @slacknhash Don't forget Hawkwind can play too. :D

  • @jasonjarvis1988 yessir

  • They are probably one of the most iconic bands ever...

  • Yeah..I was just gonna say that Steviesuperstar....

  • Way beyond their best here. Weak. Compared to how mighty they were on Space Ritual, this is just musical Kia Ora.

  • Is that a very young Lemmy on bass?

  • No.. This is hawkwind post Lemmy

  • Nah, blessya, Lemmy never was young, he's always been a crusty old Bastard,

That's Adrian Shaw on Bass, And Bob, on lipsynch. I think Dave was too "right on" to do the show, because they wouldn't let them play live, and you know what a fuckin' purist he is!

  • yeah think he wiggled out the womb

    sportin' a 4 day stubble

w/ a smoke in one hand & a beer in the other (maybe a nipple on the bottle end

he was just a baby y'know?)

  • Hawkwind has had so far many many years of great songs and great album. This is one of them.

They are one of those bands you either love them or just cant understand why people love, which makes it great to be a fan, keeps the douch bag numbers down. Hawkwind are our protection against the sonic attack of douchbaggery

  • lol this track is awesome the lyrics are brilliant ,most people dont even know what quark strangness and charm are .

  • Love the song but I admit it........I don't know what quark strangness and charm are..would you please tell me :: D

  • A quark (pronounced /kwɔrk/, kwork or /kwɑrk/, kwark) is an elementary particle and a fundamental constituent of matter. Quarks combine to form composite particles called hadrons, the most stable of which are protons and neutrons, the components of atomic nuclei.[1] Due to a phenomenon known as color confinement, quarks are never found in isolation; they can only be found within hadrons.[2][3] .

There are six types of quarks, known as flavors: up, down, charm, strange, top, and bottom.[4] ...

  • Wow,I'll have to read that one over and over until it sinks in.You certainly know your stuff.Thank you.Physics aren't my strongest of points.I don't know what an orgone is either,as in Orgone Accumulator. : )

  • yeah i got it off wikipedia , thats the short version as we have 500 characters as you know, im no expert id only heard of quark strange and charm didnt know a great deal about it, but it sounds deep babe

  • I remember years ago I looked up orgone and quark in the dictionary and neither were in it. That was years ago though

  • Orgone was proposed by Willhelm Reich as a form of universal bioenergy. He thought that this energy could be harnessed from the atmosphere and used for various things like psychic, spiritual and physical healing. Devices that harnessed or accumulated orgone were therefore called orgone accumulators. Dave Brock probably has three :). The song also led to one of the best descriptions of Hawkwind's music I've ever heard - (Willhelm) Reich 'n' Roll.

  • Thank you very much. That has puzzled over that for years.I find it a bit unnerving to sing along to a song and not know what I'm singing about. Cheers : D

  • The song is a clever play on words and their meanings.

As STEVIOESUPERSTAR says quark strangeness and charm are some of the elementary particles from which atom nuclei are made, but the song lyrics at the end are:

"Did none of those astronomers discover

While they were staring out into the dark

That what a lady looks for in her lover

is Charm, Strangeness and Quark" . . . meaning that that with these words they also refer to personality characteristics which women admire.

  • looks being subjective al may or not have been handsome but as for never having a girl he had 'em probably more than most rock stars too google einstein, women find out for yourself quark's my 2nd is a favorite hawkdisc after mountain grill and calvert's a blast but his take on the good doctor was quite a bit off the mark
  • It rhymed didn't it? And what would you prefer?

A list of Einsteins Sci-Groupies, or Captain Bob, lipsynching?

  • neither my man

    maybe einstein lip-synching hawkwind

    might be an idea tho

    peace&love ... & hawkwind too

  • thumbs up. hawkwind and robert clavert have written so many fantastic tracks i couldn't count them. i know drugs aren't big or clever but try their stuff on acid - fookin beautiful x

  • I had some mushrooms last weekend and listened to 3 or 4 Hawkwind records. It was wonderful.

  • Send me some!

  • Slitheen, I have just read the lyrics to Spirit of the Age. What about them could Bolan have not thought of? It sounds like a camp fun song anyway. I expected to see some deep poetic meaning behind it but rather it sounds like a Bowie b side. Genius!

  • You asked where X Factor came from....well it came from you saying "everyone's heard of Bolan". Nearly the whole country watches crap manufactured pop at the weekend but it doesn't make it good. People with real taste have always been in a minority. That was the point. Doesn't take a genius, my friend.

  • Well if those flew over your head, which I suspected they might, try listening to the track called 'High Rise' on the Hawkwind album PXR5. You can read the lyrics if you like, but to do them justice you meed to hear the passion in Calvert's voice. There is social commentary there that Bolan couldn't be capable of if he tried. It's modern Dickens, for crying out aloud.

  • To be honest Slitheen, I'm completely bored of this and I can't keep coming back to give this video hits. Another thing is, you should stop slagging off a dead man. Now I am off, very bored. Keep up the work being obsessed with this band, no one else is.

  • Do you know what I think? I think you just have something against Hawkwind as they were borrowing Marc's white Rolls Royce on the night of his death. What with Rollers being very safe cars...with the passengers less likely to die when one hits a tree. Listen, it is not the fault of Hawkwind that your beloved Mr Bolan is dead! And the best way to honour Marc is not to insult his friends, which you started. You really aren't keeping a little bit of Marc in your heart, are you? You BAD Bolan fan!

  • You know what Slitheen, we like you after what you said about the BNP on the Question Time video. I happened to search the video and recognise your name in the comments. We are not bad Marc Bolan fans, if you saw our videos on here, you would see that we keep a lot of Marc in our hearts. But because your comment about the BNP made sense, we are going to unite with you and say rock on with your mushrooms and your Hawkwind obsession because arguing with you has been a gas. KALMIYH.

  • Well at last something we can agree on. The BNP are fascists and we all hate them. That would also be something Marc Bolan and Bob Calvert would drink to.

  • Yes Definately, any sane mind would drink to that. We have added you as a friend as we are sad to end this argument. It has given this video it's fai share of hits. Now I see Hawkwind everywhere I go. In the record store today there were several LPs. If Marc wasn't on this video I would've never known who they were. But now, they haunt me with their Quark, Strangeness and Charm.

  • If they both weren't so totally tragically dead. Bob would be drinking Carly Spesh, and Marc, a Babycham!

  • So what happened to Dave Brock? Strangely absent....

  • He wouldn't go on and mime, because it was too much like TOTP. Bob was always more of an attention whore, and had no such qualms.

  • "I don't hear much substance to the lyrics in this song."

Quarks are the building blocks of atoms, maybe it's a bit deep for you?

  • A bit too geeky perhaps.

  • If these are your good friends Marc, you've gotta question who you hang out with!

  • EscapingEthanOfficia, WHAT?! Hawkwind are great guys....I've met several of them over the years. And Bob Calvert [RIP] (lead singer on this video) is a genius poet and songwriter who was dearly thought of by many, including myself. I'm afraid it's your friends who need to question who they hang out with.... as you're clearly a judgemental ass!

  • Comment removed

  • No, you were posting on a public forum, insulted a band many people love and have left yourself open to the comeback *you* invited - so I will not "piss off". I have no love of Marc Bolan or his music but I wouldn't disrespect him the way you have Hawkwind. It's called respect....you should look it up.

  • If you can't appreciate Marc Bolan but you call this a masterpiece then you need to question your own mind!

  • It's called personal taste....you obviously need to look that up too. Anyway you shouldn't be trying to make comparisons like that... they were actually great friends and any *real* Marc Bolan fan would respect that. But seeing as you want to compare, then I'll say Bob Calvert is far more than a lyricist...he was a poet before and after his musical dalliances. Bolan's music was camp and fun...but without very much substance to it. You're trying to compare Michelin star food to a TV dinner.

  • You obviously need to do your research as Marc Bolan was also a poet whose book The Warlock Of Love sold more copies (35,000) than any other published poet of his time. His music has influenced MANY artists and is covered and used to this day, be it in advertising and commercials etc. There is even a musical going to be made with his music and a film. Who doesn't know of Marc Bolan or at least his songs? Hawkwind, who are they????? Take your own advice, are you respecting Bob's friend?

  • One more thing, Marc's music had no substance? I don't hear much substance to the lyrics in this song. The weak vulnerable vocals do little to distract from the repetitive backing music.

The amazing thing about fact is that you can't change it. And the amazing thing about opinion s that you can't change that either.

Use a little Quark, Strangeness and Charm, it'll get you everywhere.

  • Marc Bolan was the Robbie Williams of his day.

Poppy, mainstream, and image based. Whereas if Hawkwind were ever concerned with the singles chart, TV appearences, or catering their sound towards a demographic of underage, screaming girls, they hid it really well!

  • How many people watch Pop Idol or X-Factor? Your numbers mean nothing - there's one born every minute. And respect doesn't extend to saying I like the Bolan's music when I don't, really. I said it is camp and fun, which was a compliment, and many people would agree. There's nothing else to his music. Calvert was a social commentator of class and distinction. Read the lyrics to spirit of the age.....Bolan couldn't write like that if he tried.

  • Where did X Factor come from? What's that got to do with Bolan? This is becoming tiresome Slitheen, you've clearly lost your point.

You know NOTHING about Bolan, you only know his hits. You've clearly never read his early lyrics or read his poetry! I've never said that Calvert was anything like Bolan but do yourself a favour and read some Bolan lyrics before you compare because you know nothing about Bolan and it shows.

  • THANKS FOR POSTING THIS!!!

  • It dosn't quite sound the same as the record.

    EX upload.

    Thanks so much! UW2

  • adrian shaw!

  • Dave Brock refused to appear because he would not lip synch/air guitar , so he was invisible.

Can't blame him really ,but his stubborn attitude bit him on the ass too many times.

  • Why did the Bolan insist on lip synching? Geez, Hawkwind certainly could have played the song damn well live.

  • Lol Mr. Brock is bunking off!

Good to see Paul Rudolph on bass there, Simon King on drums.

  • WOW !!! This is off the hook !!! Bob kills me ... God bless Youtube and Hawkwind !!! Excellent ...

  • ha ha - I've got this on audio - off-air. I couldn't afford a VCR until two years later!

  • Comment removed

  • outstanding
