  • It is just unbelievable that with such a full sized voice and rich tone that Lady Price can dwell so comfortably up there (not that I ever doubted her flexibility). She was not lying when she said in her interview that nosebleed territory is where she lives. WOW!!!!

  • Ya know, the word "amazing" gets thrown around quite a lot. But HERE is where it's most appropriate.

  • just unbelievable. I think I just died. She is amazing.

  • Sorry, this did not cut it for me........

  • Thank you very much for this posting!

It's really...ah, no words to explain Ms. Price's amazing voice.

    WUNDERBAR, einfach wunderbar.

  • Every young soprano should listen to this. And learn from the example of Miss Price's handling of her career.

  • she is the greatest.

  • @mayo0di0niero I honestly believe she got the Grammy that year for that note alone!

  • Holding a high E-Natural for that long with a voice like Prices' is simply unbelievable.

  • OMG!!! I'm at a total loss for words! Is she even supposed to be able to do that???

  • Oh my God, that was stunning! :D I guess the human voice is capable of much, much more than we give it credit for. If such a dramatic voice can sing an E6 without any sign of stress or strain, then there's no excuse for certain less dramatic instruments to achieve the same. Brava, diva!

  • OMG is there something she can't do it? I love her!!!!!!!!!

  • I couldn't ever imagine that note sung by Price. She really could have done things as a coloratura but the timbre of her voice suited best to other roles, those she sang on stage.

  • This "Prima Donna vol.5" is perhaps the most amazing achievement of La Price. Recorded in 1979 when she was 52, it is perhaps the most eclectic and challenging collection of arias recorded by one artist. Casta Diva, Ozean, Du Ungeheuer, this aria, the Ballatella (still one of my all-time favorite recordings) and the Liebestod, among others. It was the first aria recital album I ever bought at 15, and sealed my worship of Leontyne Price for the next 30 years. Brava Diva!

  • After that last note, what else is there to say about the greatest soprano of the 20th century! There are no words...you just BOW when you hear her voice and keep BOWING....and BOWING...and BOWING!!!!!!

  • a Dramatic soprano's Eb6 or E6 is worth real Diamonds

  • Perfection. Her recital versions of great opera arias were so beautiful. She doesn't sound like the real Gilda who's a young, love-struck girl. Leontyne's voice is more mature, expressive and dark. She's not a coloratura. This role is sung mainly by lighter coloratura sopranos who can also sing Violetta. But Leontyne sings this so grandly and gorgeously. I can hear this forever and never tire of it.

  • @OperaMystery80 In this respect, she follows in the footsteps of Callas, who demonstrated that Gilda can be convincingly sung by a heavier voice with a more dramatic sound. I actually feel that the Callas/Price approach (Scotto also comes to mind) is far more appropriate than the traditional perception of Gilda as a light coloratura role. Gilda indeed starts out as a young, love-struck girl, but she grows up very rapidly in the final scenes, and the singer's voice should reflect the change.

  • Lovely//OMG

  • OMG...

  • OMG...

  • OMG

  • this does not suit Miss Price but that last note will resonate forever, woulnt suprise me if it reaches Alien life before any scientists will with all their Gizmos!!!

  • WOWWWWW!!! I Love it!!! :)

  • I didn't know she was an E6 soprano!!!!

  • WOW !

  • No way.... No she didn't hit that high Mi natural.. She freaked me out. I'm impressed.

  • A most incredible singer, and I'm not only reffering g to the hight E natural. How lucky we were to have such an incredible lady like this in our lives.

  • As much as I love Leontyne Price, she doesn't have the right voice type for this aria. I still listened to the whole thing though!

  • @Caroline91394 : I have to disagree. This aria fits her voice " like a glove" as she would see. Her technique is impeccable, even, and artistically perfect. What else do you want?

  • @Caroline91394 : I have to disagree. This aria and composer fits her voice " like a glove" as she has said on numerous occasions. Her technical approach is impeccable, her tone is even across the range of this song, and her interpretation is next to none. What else do you want?

  • Yes that last note is amazing!

  • One wonders if it was like this in the 80's, how would this have sounded in the the 60's????

  • @arturo8402

check out a local flea market or old bookstore that stores vinyl albums, place it on a turntable @ the right speed and be FLOORED! O patria Mia still brings me to tears on her 1st recording of Aida (RCA records)

  • Girlfriend, you got it goin' on.

  • Es la mejor versión que yo conozco.........Muy buena................the best version I've heard

  • If you think this is great (espically that last E ) check out the video titled "Leontyne Price preformance in 2008." She is in her 80"s then and still sings it!

  • *mouth drops* wooooow I mean I have fallen completely in love with her now!!!

  • that last note just gave me chills.....thank u ms price!!!!!

  • Now hat I'm older, I generally like hearing singers try things out of their Fach and singing when beyond their prime...as long as the listener realizes this. This emphasizes that no matter who you are, some music is better suited to your talents than other music. In addition, we see what "naturally" happens to the voice as it matures. We all know that a sprinter is not a distance runner, and that hair greys with age. The voice is also part of our make up.

  • I love how Ms. Price sings Caro Nome/Rigolleto....She is FANTASTIC..just born to sing Verdi..Thank you..LOVE.

  • @Feisenbach If you ever sung you'd fully understand. My personal explanation is just because you want to. There will be music unsuited for my voice type (lyric music opposed to dramatic) that I will do just because I absolutely love them. She does a great job on this aria just as Del Monaco does with Vecchia, Largo etc... it's fun and isn't "butchered"

  • @Dtenor87

Being a contralto myself, I would love to just get to an A but......I understand your point but dont judge Feisenbach too harshly. that E is a love it or hate it situation. Thanks.

  • @Feisenbach - Why isn't a critic of your imagined caliber writing for the NYT? At least.

  • @fferocious

Easy now, guys. Some like the E and other dont...pure and simple. Again, check out the Mews News vid on Leontyne recieving a lifetime achievement award. She can bring it @ 80+

  • This is the song that I test my stereo on....the bass settings! Trust me, turn the treble up on your equipment and the speakers MELT!

  • 3:02-13 was not leontyne at her best here.... especially at 3:10 that sounded just icky... dont bash me just my opinion

  • Oh my God...

  • A high-E att the very end. And with 52 yo OMG

  • No other soprano on Youtube that I've listened to has hit the high-E in this aria. This is the reason why Leontyne was the *ONLY* prima donna assoluta of her generation. It will be quite some time before another soprano can rightfully claim the title from her!

  • @JumpStreet1983

Not true. Laura Claycomb also hit a long and bright high-E.

Check it out. It's just out of this world.

  • thanks...got it

  • where?s the famous high E of hers here?

  • @seetsebea1 at 5.56 !!

  • thanks

  • Anna Moffo's version actually seems cleaner on those high and staccato notes...

This is very nice though! Better than I could do. :)

  • le plus beau contre mi qu'il m'est donné d'entendre!

    brava LA STRADIVARIA !!!!

  • beautifully executed.

  • Correction: It's from Prima Donna No.5, recorded in summer 1979.

  • Such an intelligent singer!

  • Onegin65...You always post such gems. Thank you! Are you sure this is from 1980?!? Forgive me for questioning you but, she sounds SO young here! And that high E!

  • She never ceases to amaze me!! Total eargasm!!!

  • This isn't even one of her roles...incredible! I guess Leontyne has a little gift with Verdi.

  • I have always loved and admired ms price, but this me to another level of respect for her amazing talent.

  • What a MASTERPIECE. I LOVE IT. My dad talked about her...She is a DIVA..

  • Check out the Meus News vid where she is honored w/a lifetime award. @ 83, she STILL has the right stuff!

  • a high E natural!!!!!! help me...I'm dying!!!!

  • @beefnotfish and it is not bellowed! That makes it even more spectacular!

  • ZARPADÍSIMA!!! QUÉ OSADA!!

  • are you kidding me????she's singing Gilda at 53....and sounds like always...AMAZING!!!!!!

  • Recorded in the early 80's (featured on the Prima Donna Collection 4-cd set) Leontyne Price sings a very touching Gilda and surprisingly well for being the 80's, the time she retired from the opera in her older age...absolutely amazing

  • this is heaven... and even God sat down to listen....

  • heard this for the first time.... before that I adored Leontyne Price... now what should I do???

  • @brodsky96

buy a turntable and a CD player then, buy all that has Leontyne ESPICALLY the vinyl! After that, play and enjoy!

  • @RRydnew ... you did not understand my comment....

  • my god! unbelievable

  • IT BRINGS GOOSEBUMPS!

  • This was my introduction to Opera when i was 16, I really love this aria, and especially by her. What a beautiful voice. Thank you for posting this.
