I laughed when my dad told me that Michael Crawford was Phantom of the Opera....I just listened to his cd and was expecting a 'early one morning just as the sun was rising....' or even 'there was a man who bought a cat...'
I fell in love with the show on You Tube and bought an all-region DVD player so I could buy the entire series on DVD. Michael Crawford is an absolutely brilliant comedian - a real genius. It's not just his physical ability (holy cow, the stunts he does are incredible - I can not believe he actually went under that truck), but everything else as well. He literally inhabits the character of Frank Spencer to the point where you can't find any trace of Michael there at all.
This isn't the funniest scene of the entire series, the deleted scene in moving house was. ( The entire tar barrel incident with the Sikh couple uncut) It can only be viewed on Gold as the BBC refused to allow it to be aired, even on the DVD release.
Franky frankly has a face like a sucked out feruca and what's with the hair which makes him appear to be going in 5 different directions at once ? I admit that I've never seen The Hex Factor, yet I still seem to be haunted by this talentless little pre-warmed has-bin. It's amazing how such a vacuous T.V show can cause such a stir amongst the airheads of the nation who rush to vote for a bunch of 3rd rate Butlins entertainers, but can't be bothered to turn out on Polling day.
Michael Crawford is one of the most talented individuals in all of show business. From this show, to helping Torvill & Dean with their Gold Medal winning performance of "Bolero" to Phantom of the Opera and other works, Crawford is genius. Pure and simple.
One of THE best comedy moments ever. Michael Crawford is a legend and this is wat comedy should be. I'd love to se a modern day 'Health and Safety' version of this...
im 19 and i love Some Mothers Do Ave Em, one of the best sitcoms ever, i got the box set a few years ago and it is easily my most played DVD always makes me laugh
How this show was only rated #22 of the greatest British sitcoms is beyond me- certainly in the top five for sure and what a great talent Crawford was and still is.
They should have had Frank shouting "I REGRET NOTHING!!!!" when he flew out of the building. That would have been hilarious but this was still pretty funny.
That hilarious sketch seriously reminded me of Norman Wisdom when he was filming Trouble In Store in 1953 he used some rollerskates to go after the bus that Sally Wilson (Lana Morris) was on just to return her purse :L
The best actual scene is when Frank can't get the Wendy house out the house and he lowers it out of the window but as it goes down he goes up bangs his head smashes the Wendy house gies down the rope is still tied to him and he goes up upside down smashes the Wendy house again comes down the Wendy house falls on him and the ambulance comes for him roflmao
The 1970's was the best decade for British comedy, yet of all the superb stuff we saw - this is the one that people keep referring to. My only regret is that with today's technology the sequence could have been even longer!! Michael Crawford is a national treasure.
Its a good thing we still have channels like UK gold that show timeless classic and genious British humour like this. Unlike most of the mainstream crap broadcasted today (apart from TV burp maybe, but NOTHING comes close to old british humour)
You just can't imagine anyone else in the part of Frank Spencer. Even if Michael Crawford was third choice for the part. (Norman Wisdom was first choice but he turned it down)
my mate carl pushed his grandfather under a sunblest bread wagon after watching that episode, his grand father nearly died of heart failure!!! but lived gracefully to tell the tale
@JoelGeetar Erm your totally wrong, michael crawford did every single one of his stunts. the man is an absolute legend. one of the best shows ever. im 29 now and i grew up watching this shit and i still laugh at it to this day.
If there r any lip readers out there and have seen the kilt episode ( which has been taken off :( ) @ the end when the credits r rolling Frank says something to someone and looks angry I would really appreciate it if you could tell me what he says! :)
If there are any lip readers on youtube and you have seen the kilt episode ( which has been taken down) at the end of the episode he says something but there is no sound. Please if you can tell me what he says. I would really appreciate it
To think Crawford can go from this brilliant comedy as the hapless frank spencer,to become the supremely dramatic Phantom in the Phantom of the Opera. Superb actor/singer!
@unrealharry no thats wrong, the skating down the spiral stairway was at Edmonton Green, where the bus station is now and opposite the Edmonton Green railway station and some of it is in Pickets Lock
In my opinion the craziest stunt he ever did was in the driving lesson episode where he drove over a train track right as the train was passing. He actually had to swerve a little to the right to avoid being hit by that train. Insanely dangerous and very Michael Crawford!!
Just read that to, about him doing his own stunts. I have doubts. the first part in this with him on the stairway looks like someone else. Lets get to the bottom of this.
@Geert365 He did ALL of his own stunts. The only one he didn't do was flying the aeroplane in the 1978 Christmas special. But it was all him. There was even a 1975 documentary called To Be Perfectly Frank where they went behind the scenes on his stunts for that year's Christmas special and some of his previous ones.
Theres too many stunts around using wizardry and modern technology - anythings possible using those! The beauty of Some Mothers Do Ave Em was that Michael Crawford did all of his own stunts - He learnt any skill just to do them (including tightrope walking and trapezing in later years for Barnum) Not many actors are prepared to do that these days - they get stand ins.
If only this excellent sequence could be re-shot today with our modern technology, camera tricks and other technical wizzardry .... just think, it could have been a far longer sequence and even funnier. Still, it's the one everyone remembers from the many episodes!

Surely, the true measure of this piece of comic genius is the fact that despite seeing this clip numerous times, it still makes you laugh?
The past 3 mundane, boring decades have produced nothing that comes close to the TV comedy that we adored in the 1970's.
Series such as this one (and Fawlty Towers) are absolute quality - masterpieces of comedy.......and true quality, in anyone's language, is timeless
