  • haha, pearl articulites are so cute. Just like this one they come in sizes 14 by 10, and the older smaller size 13 by 9. Hes using the smallest of the smallest, the 13 by 9. That size is really hard to find these days.

  • Maybe YOU Are more like a sport! Snare- like any instrument- has a range of color (or timbre..."groove" junky..brass monkey..lazy diamond studded flunky) that can only be accessed by "quick and fancy moves!" And once the ear adjusts to these color changes.. it demands them! That's why groove-splattered, sausage dripping, cow-tipping, jingle-jangle, star spangled, banana-rama! Get it!

  • I'm a drummer myself (self-taught, drum set) . All those quick and fancy moves are impressive - better than I could do - but I don't get it. Somebody actually wrote this? It sounds like random noise. It makes me think either "Wow, your ability to precisely play random notes that somebody wrote is amazing" or else "Dude, are you playing what is written at all?". There is no "groove" to it. Maybe snare drumming is just a world of it's own that I don't understand, more like a sport than an art?

  • its pretty good. when you play a marching snare in traditional grip ur right elbow shoul be OUT away from your body. and in matched well the left one should be out too.

  • Where did you get this sheet music? Because I want to play it.

  • Hey where did you get this sheet music? Because I want it haha.

  • @ZXROMEO what the hell does weight have to do with drumming? he is an awsome snare player thats all that rele matters

  • nice job dixon always impressed with your percussive know-how

  • AMAZING

  • Are you in drum corps?

  • Comment removed

  • it looks like you play a lot of timpani

  • he needs 2 b n slipknot so serius

  • now dat is badass.

  • Damn! that's fast, i could probably pull some of it off....but I'd more than likely hit the sticks.

  • k i play kit so im not a snare wiz.. but whats the differenece between a rudimental snare solo and regular snare solo...

  • probably more rudiments like paradiddle diddles or ratamucues and book reports and stupid stuff like that lol

  • and why would these be stupid?

  • rudimental solos use stroked out rolls (double stroke) and involve more complex stickings. concert solos are played with buzz rolls and do not involve stroked rudiments such as flamadiddles, book reports, grandmas, hertas, etc etc

  • A rudimentary solo utilizes rudiments, such as paradiddles, flamadiddles, doubles, etc. Whereas a regular solo is just a piece with notes, hardly any specific rudiments. Regular solos will generally have loads of dynamic.

  • fuck all these other cuntbags on here, clearly non-professional drummers. they dont know shit. i remember trying to provide clarity to this piece, you did an awesome job brother! i miss these days!!!

  • i agree, he did do an awesome job, this piece is very rudimental, but his sticks are unmatched and it's driving me crazy!!!!!!!!

  • noob

  • Good to see somebody play some rudiments for a change. Most drum set drummers nowadays just play everything single stroke and don't use any double stroke, paradiddle patterns for style. Way to go buddy. Keep it up!!

  • Tom Gregg, the guy who wrote the solo took lessons from my father, Don Worth.

  • Your dad is a great drummer

  • is it not easier to memorise than it is to read something like that?

  • It's hard to try and sightread a piece like this, but after practicing it it wouldn't make much difference. Best to pretty much know the piece.

  • there's something wrong with your left hand traditional grip...looks like you are too much under the stick...stay more on top, not palm up. also, try not to rush so much...you are smearing everything together..get some clarity, then go for speed.

  • nice triple stroke rolls!

  • god i played this solo for state and placed fifth with it. I hate this solo now. the other guys were freakin crazy good. Nice job though

  • i poop my pants at 3:00

  • haha i use that same exact solo for my drum solo for drum line!

  • those were some sweet paradiddles in there

  • Very nice, awesome speed. Incredible technique and control. You play in very POWERFUL way :)

  • thats freakin sick, plz check out my snare solo and comment! :)

  • "too much arm" isn't the right way to put it... it's that your technique looks extremely awkward. Just try opening up the space between your arms more.

  • mr know it all huh?! fuck you.

  • just like chauntetherocker said its pretty much all rudiments and also it has techniquest thrown in such as ghost notes, accents, rests here and there etc. Anyone can play like this its all about whether they can be bothered practicing rudiments every day it gets really boring!

  • Practicing rudiments every day is important. I practice every rudiment now...it really helps. Five minutes for every rudiment, five minutes for every hand. You get unbelieveably fast unbelieveably quick.

  • STFU your a faggot that will get nowhere in life faggot ass.

  • What the fuck are you talking about? I wasn't bashing anyone, I was just agreeing with him. Anyone can play like that if they can be bothered to practice their rudiments. I was just throwing in my opinion that practicing like that is important. Calm down, Turbo.

  • man i would love to have half this tecnic and put it into my drumset playing !!

  • Great rudamental understanding. could use a little more dynamic contrast.

  • Music being performed should never be read off a sheet of paper.

  • "Music being performed should never be read off a sheet of paper."

    bullshit...

  • I guess it's okay if you're a beginner and you don't care to practice enough so that memorization comes naturally.

  • cant agree. I play all those standards like markovich´s, hurley or wooton in tempo and by heart, but I always like to have the part in front. its just a matter of prefference and it never influenced my performance in any kind of negative way. I dont believe ts a fair reason to judge or crush someone´s performance...

  • As the audience, I say it takes away a lot from the performance. I don't care about the performer. The performer is supposed to keep the audience in mind. Eye contact, grooving, all necessary for a nice performance, and gives a feeling of originality. If you're reading something off a page, you're just replaying someone else's work and seem to care only about that and the unconditional applause at the end.

  • "eye contact"?... "If you're reading something off a page, blablabla"...

haha you make me laugh! sorry but it sounds like a prolix wannabe rookie statement. you´re probably too young... well, no surprise "alphafalconx" - "copy?"

  • maybe you are one of those dci faggy dancing morons who love to play for the chicks and who believe that a good performance has to do with looking arrogant or "catchy", facing the audience right in the eye or something faggy like that. then, its all explaned. ENOUGH SAID.

  • Yep, enjoying hugs from chicks afterward sure do make me a fag.

  • ha, sure not, but it doesent make those moves any less faggy or stupid.

  • jesus christ people, this isn't the DCI, and using matched grip is not a sin.

it gets the job done, as clearly demonstrated here.

  • i disagree with he's using too much arm. it could just be a different technique. phantom regiment uses a lot of arm and their drums have dominated the DCI the past few years

  • You couldn't even memorize your solo? Lame-o

  • haha, I memorized it for state :)

  • i see stuff like "tune the drum"

    maybe its the camera?

or do none of you know that filming stuff is an art? ...

  • Too much arm.

  • I agree. Watch any DCI I&E and you'll know what a good snare drumming is supposed to look like. Take a look at "Snare Solo Competition" by PJMSnare04 in the related vids.

  • good thing this was in high school then, and not in a fucking drumline :=)

  • you're well good :)

  • awesome dude 5 stars all the way you're awesome!!!

  • Enough with the "Travis" crap already. You all

think he's the benchmark or something. He's way overrated.

  • yah seriously tune that drum, other than that ur wayyyy better than Travis. He doesnt know what soft is. I hate Travis. Good job man.

  • how do people play doubles quickly? do you just have to practice it?

  • you basicly need to loosen your rist because you are openig the rolls so whe nyou go- ll rr ll rr ll rr ll rr ll rr and speedup it will look like this on the sheet music mashine llll rrrr llll rrrr llll rrrr is relly fast and study so practice it will work out

  • thanks... I think.....haha.

  • other then the tuning and the switch back and forth between trad and match it sounds pretty good... may b more confidence

  • hey man your solo was good ignore all the other negative comments. the snare sounded a bit lifeless in its tuning thats all i want to say.

    keep it up!!

  • marching snares are when solos are at their best!

  • ew!!

    stay off the marching snares.

  • hahaha, fuck you

  • hahaha. killer reply! show that rude fuck.

  • nice job josh. thanks for writing our cadences for the gordon russell drum line. they were sick.

  • Not bad but nothing special either. Your technique is very strange... particularly the match grip.

  • try traditional

  • this is a level 7 solo? have you played tornado? you will probably like it and also try to play traditional i bet you couldnt play shit in traditional man..

  • the first page of the solo is traditional... did you watch the video? yes, I learned that solo as well back in high school

  • wow i hate that snare i used it b4 and i think its too tight -.-

  • that's a weird sounding snare

  • wat the fuk were u on about hold ur sticks right? alot of people are taught to hold them like that because of the old style snares!

  • that was good, but hes playnig matched.

  • what place did you get at state

  • I got 5th

  • im sorry ..u seem to be a good drummer ..but it sounds like a monkey with 2 sticks and a snare drum ..make another and make sure quality is better..

  • I think you played rather well. I have to say, it is pretty obvious that you're into concert drumming, but of course there's nothing wrong with that. Ignore the marching snares with chips on their shoulders, they were born that way. Arrogance is coded into their cells.

  • yeah, some people are just jealous they can't do that.

  • Love how most of the douche bags posting NEGATIVE shit don't seem to have any videos of themselves playing. It's real easy to say that I'M THE GREATEST and not have vids or anything else to back it up. I also love the "Hold your sticks right dickhead" comment. Just goes to show that OTOT98 is about the biggest piece of shit there is who has absolutely NO IDEA of drumming. Go back to sitting on your daddies lap and play 'ride em cowboy' OTOT98!! As for the drumming, keep up the good work.

  • either the solo sucks or ur timing is horrible...CONCERT NOOB..keep off da marching

  • You know, it's a shame band director's still haven't been able to teach their snares that it's not all about THEM. At least concert drummers know what dynamics are.

  • woah brotha, don't you know what a fucking rudimental solo is?! there are time fluxuations you rim wizard! haha. thanks for the entertainment.

  • HE SHOULD TAKE OFF HIS SHIRT.

  • NO! I don't need my titties floppin' everywhere lol :)

  • since you are a senior u need to practice some more...buddy

  • thanks! do you have any vids? do you know this solo?

  • boring...

  • sorry

  • pretty good rudimental solo from a very obviously concert percussionist

  • and what makes you think i'm a concert percussionist?

  • your grip and general demeanor. the fact that you're reading the music instead of watching your stick height and playing position. are you not a concert percussionist?

  • why the fuck does everyone have to say something about him just watch the damn video shit

  • Are you trying to take someone's eye out nah just kidding dude forget everyone else that is some awesome shit right there.

  • hold ya sticks right dick head

  • Is this French grip day? And you use WAYY too much arm.

  • this is fucking awesome

  • I love this kid. YOU ARE AWESOME JOSH!!!! Screw you who thinks they are better them him. You are wrong.

  • you're a penis.

  • the snare has to sound better

  • Haha, I am within driving distance of Gresham!

  • play traditional style you panzy

  • lmao hey leave him alone! not everybody can do that...not everybody was raised to learn both styles...

  • me neither, but i learned it

  • What is the snare head you're using?

  • And you're the first!? Bullshit!!!!!!!!!! I've seen better than you man !

  • Oh shut the fuck up retard

  • did you start making stuff up? at the end? if you did you're a fuckin bad ass. yeah he's right about opening up those flams. i thought it was some bad ass shit.

  • very nice... the snare doesnt sound bad... its a marching snare its supposed to sound like that i think

  • the snare does sound kind of bad...you can tune a marching snare way better...i dont know if thats the best he can do with the sound but who cares when he can play like that...props to him

  • That snare sounds bad but you sound awesome!

  • ... accent and tap heights... your at like 6 inch taps and like 14 inch accents... man come bring it to 3 inch taps and keep hte 14 inch accents.

  • Good shit!

  • sounds alrite, maybe its the piece i dont like or something, something wrong about it. i dont like your posture, that could be improved. didnt like you technique or style. still pretty awesome. also, before performance, check wat you wearing. because i saw that your shirt was in the way a couple of times..

  • Absolutely well played. Maybe a few popped falams, but very good. Its so easy for someone to say that they could do better and all, but you have the proof here, and did wonderful. Kudos

  • traditional grip = carpal tunnel = drumming career screwed

  • where did you get music to that

  • wow thats great in school i do nothing like that

  • THANKS! I hated that perticular drum, and I got a brand new one to use for state. This drum had holes in the bottom and top heads, hahah, and was out of tune. oh well :)

  • the unedited three seconds of paper and camera being put away were stylish.

  • hahaha, yeah, I just wanted to throw the video up there. this was a long while ago. hehe

  • I defiantly like the old school style of it, and I can tell there is some choppy stuff in there, but you need to really work on sound quality. It's really weak sounding.

  • man, i seriously walked away from my computer when i saw top secret.

  • cool dude, have fun on the college level snare lines. go to a big school, they're more challenging when it comes to perc marching stuff. i give you props on match grip, it's a more natural technique when playing a flat drum. When it comes to back sticking and stuff like that i'd do traditional because of the visual affect. Just a thought.

  • NO!!! Never put the drum on a sling, harness, etc. you would be stuck in ONE POSITION! I did memorize the solo for the state comp and I took 5th. I didn't practice for shit. Yes, there are MANY solos that tell you which grip to use. Thanks tho!

  • Needs polishing.I've never heard of music telling you what grip you could use. Put the drum on a sling, use traditional grip, and memorize. Look up TOP SECRET DRUM CORP of BASEL SWITZERLAND for some interesting and innovative stuff. Swiss drummers are some of the best in the world. Check it out.

  • i like it, and you look like my econ teacher, not saying thats bad, but you do

  • you need to work on your technique cause you hack way too much

  • great solo and cool chops dude!!=O)

  • yeah, i agree that the solo needs all traditional, but the solo was written for both styles... and what do you mean by my technique doesn't match the drum... jesus,

  • use traditional sticking and forget the matched grip sticking.I also feel that your technique doesn't match the drum.

  • i thought it was pretty good, bad snare sound though

  • maybe need to try some traditional play so it looks better

  • truly american, why should it look good I prefer a good sound over good looks and thats whats its all about why play traditional both your hands look and work the same so why treat them different

  • besides, everyone is so used to hearing marching snares we've grown unaccustomed to the concert snare's sound.

  • its not bad but i just don't think you should be using a marching snare. your technique doesn't match the drum.

  • rudimental snare solos are played with marching snare drums to allow the distinction of every single note to be heard with excellence, rather than a soft-spoken orchestral snare...

p.s. why do people comment on videos when they actually don't know what they are talking about? (to everybody)

  • rudimental solos were originally played on concert snares, but with the latest craze of playing fast and difficult hybrid rudiments, everyone figured they might as well play it on the marching snare. the marching snare sounds no worse or better for this solo.

  • class performance, and humble performer. well done!

  • your definitly talented, but try not to be so conceited ;-)

  • Marching snares are tuned much tighter, therefore providing more rebound than a regular snare. And once more, Travis Barber isn't the best drummer in the world.

  • are those marching drums a similar feel to a normal snare or more bouncy?

  • The heads are tuned way tighter, and they have a lot more bounce :)

  • *jaw drops* speechless

  • Do me a favor-go down to your local U.S. Army recruiters office and join up to be in the Old Gaurd Fife and Drum Corps! You got the chops!

  • That was awesome!! Good luck at your future competitions.

  • thats pretty rad man, keep it up

  • that's sum good stuff right there. I tried my hand at making a solo for a competition and it's hard stuff to prepair for. Good luck on everythin'

  • AWESOME MAN!!! And thanks for the tips, once I get better I'll post another video, thanks man, and that was awesome, you're great.

  • This solo was amazing. I won for my district too, I will be at the state competition but I don't think i will place very high. I have only been doing rudimental stuff for about 3 years. Good luck at state.

  • thanks! what state did you win district for? what solo are you playing?!

    -Josh

  • Oregon. I play for Lebanon High School and I am playing Like A Big Dog by Alan Koewn

  • You're definitely going places with your playing, at 18 you're incredible!

  • Thanks man!!! Yeah, i've pretty much been drummin' all my life, and It totally kicks ass!!

  • this is just about the coolest thing i have ever seen in my entire life. josh is the best drummer in the world!

  • HELL YEAH DIXON! Keep it going man, You'll easily win state at this man. you kicked ass Blonde...congratz. oh and I'm pretty sure this was in Feburary man, not March...unless you have a time machine...

    -C

  • KICK ASS!!! this video is the best ever!! BEST RUDIMENTAL SNARE PLAYER IN THE STATE OF OREGON RIGHT THERE!!!!
