haha, pearl articulites are so cute. Just like this one they come in sizes 14 by 10, and the older smaller size 13 by 9. Hes using the smallest of the smallest, the 13 by 9. That size is really hard to find these days.
Maybe YOU Are more like a sport! Snare- like any instrument- has a range of color (or timbre..."groove" junky..brass monkey..lazy diamond studded flunky) that can only be accessed by "quick and fancy moves!" And once the ear adjusts to these color changes.. it demands them! That's why groove-splattered, sausage dripping, cow-tipping, jingle-jangle, star spangled, banana-rama! Get it!
I'm a drummer myself (self-taught, drum set) . All those quick and fancy moves are impressive - better than I could do - but I don't get it. Somebody actually wrote this? It sounds like random noise. It makes me think either "Wow, your ability to precisely play random notes that somebody wrote is amazing" or else "Dude, are you playing what is written at all?". There is no "groove" to it. Maybe snare drumming is just a world of it's own that I don't understand, more like a sport than an art?
its pretty good. when you play a marching snare in traditional grip ur right elbow shoul be OUT away from your body. and in matched well the left one should be out too.

Generally we don't see overweight drummers, you need a drop a good 40 Lbs+. Judging from your mannerisms and general vibe, I think you're basically a concert drummer, right ? Other than that, good job.
rudimental solos use stroked out rolls (double stroke) and involve more complex stickings. concert solos are played with buzz rolls and do not involve stroked rudiments such as flamadiddles, book reports, grandmas, hertas, etc etc
A rudimentary solo utilizes rudiments, such as paradiddles, flamadiddles, doubles, etc. Whereas a regular solo is just a piece with notes, hardly any specific rudiments. Regular solos will generally have loads of dynamic.
fuck all these other cuntbags on here, clearly non-professional drummers. they dont know shit. i remember trying to provide clarity to this piece, you did an awesome job brother! i miss these days!!!
Good to see somebody play some rudiments for a change. Most drum set drummers nowadays just play everything single stroke and don't use any double stroke, paradiddle patterns for style. Way to go buddy. Keep it up!!
there's something wrong with your left hand traditional grip...looks like you are too much under the stick...stay more on top, not palm up. also, try not to rush so much...you are smearing everything together..get some clarity, then go for speed.
"too much arm" isn't the right way to put it... it's that your technique looks extremely awkward. Just try opening up the space between your arms more.
just like chauntetherocker said its pretty much all rudiments and also it has techniquest thrown in such as ghost notes, accents, rests here and there etc. Anyone can play like this its all about whether they can be bothered practicing rudiments every day it gets really boring!
Practicing rudiments every day is important. I practice every rudiment now...it really helps. Five minutes for every rudiment, five minutes for every hand. You get unbelieveably fast unbelieveably quick.
What the fuck are you talking about? I wasn't bashing anyone, I was just agreeing with him. Anyone can play like that if they can be bothered to practice their rudiments. I was just throwing in my opinion that practicing like that is important. Calm down, Turbo.
cant agree. I play all those standards like markovich´s, hurley or wooton in tempo and by heart, but I always like to have the part in front. its just a matter of prefference and it never influenced my performance in any kind of negative way. I dont believe ts a fair reason to judge or crush someone´s performance...
As the audience, I say it takes away a lot from the performance. I don't care about the performer. The performer is supposed to keep the audience in mind. Eye contact, grooving, all necessary for a nice performance, and gives a feeling of originality. If you're reading something off a page, you're just replaying someone else's work and seem to care only about that and the unconditional applause at the end.
"eye contact"?... "If you're reading something off a page, blablabla"...
haha you make me laugh! sorry but it sounds like a prolix wannabe rookie statement. you´re probably too young... well, no surprise "alphafalconx" - "copy?"
maybe you are one of those dci faggy dancing morons who love to play for the chicks and who believe that a good performance has to do with looking arrogant or "catchy", facing the audience right in the eye or something faggy like that. then, its all explaned. ENOUGH SAID.
i disagree with he's using too much arm. it could just be a different technique. phantom regiment uses a lot of arm and their drums have dominated the DCI the past few years
I agree. Watch any DCI I&E and you'll know what a good snare drumming is supposed to look like. Take a look at "Snare Solo Competition" by PJMSnare04 in the related vids.

I think you played rather well. I have to say, it is pretty obvious that you're into concert drumming, but of course there's nothing wrong with that. Ignore the marching snares with chips on their shoulders, they were born that way. Arrogance is coded into their cells.
Love how most of the douche bags posting NEGATIVE shit don't seem to have any videos of themselves playing. It's real easy to say that I'M THE GREATEST and not have vids or anything else to back it up. I also love the "Hold your sticks right dickhead" comment. Just goes to show that OTOT98 is about the biggest piece of shit there is who has absolutely NO IDEA of drumming. Go back to sitting on your daddies lap and play 'ride em cowboy' OTOT98!! As for the drumming, keep up the good work.
You know, it's a shame band director's still haven't been able to teach their snares that it's not all about THEM. At least concert drummers know what dynamics are.
your grip and general demeanor. the fact that you're reading the music instead of watching your stick height and playing position. are you not a concert percussionist?
did you start making stuff up? at the end? if you did you're a fuckin bad ass. yeah he's right about opening up those flams. i thought it was some bad ass shit.
the snare does sound kind of bad...you can tune a marching snare way better...i dont know if thats the best he can do with the sound but who cares when he can play like that...props to him

When it comes to back sticking and stuff like that i'd do traditional because of the visual affect. Just a thought.
NO!!! Never put the drum on a sling, harness, etc. you would be stuck in ONE POSITION! I did memorize the solo for the state comp and I took 5th. I didn't practice for shit. Yes, there are MANY solos that tell you which grip to use. Thanks tho!

rudimental snare solos are played with marching snare drums to allow the distinction of every single note to be heard with excellence, rather than a soft-spoken orchestral snare...
p.s. why do people comment on videos when they actually don't know what they are talking about? (to everybody)
rudimental solos were originally played on concert snares, but with the latest craze of playing fast and difficult hybrid rudiments, everyone figured they might as well play it on the marching snare. the marching snare sounds no worse or better for this solo.
Marching snares are tuned much tighter, therefore providing more rebound than a regular snare. And once more, Travis Barber isn't the best drummer in the world.
This solo was amazing. I won for my district too, I will be at the state competition but I don't think i will place very high. I have only been doing rudimental stuff for about 3 years. Good luck at state.
HELL YEAH DIXON! Keep it going man, You'll easily win state at this man. you kicked ass Blonde...congratz. oh and I'm pretty sure this was in Feburary man, not March...unless you have a time machine...
haha, pearl articulites are so cute. Just like this one they come in sizes 14 by 10, and the older smaller size 13 by 9. Hes using the smallest of the smallest, the 13 by 9. That size is really hard to find these days.

p.s. why do people comment on videos when they actually don't know what they are talking about? (to everybody)

rudimental solos were originally played on concert snares, but with the latest craze of playing fast and difficult hybrid rudiments, everyone figured they might as well play it on the marching snare. the marching snare sounds no worse or better for this solo.

Marching snares are tuned much tighter, therefore providing more rebound than a regular snare. And once more, Travis Barber isn't the best drummer in the world.

are those marching drums a similar feel to a normal snare or more bouncy?
Mahavishnu80 5 years ago
The heads are tuned way tighter, and they have a lot more bounce :)
