  • This is the Met's production.

  • For God's sakw - IF you're going to use this specific time period - WOMEN never made eye contact ~ they looked downward in male company. IF you're going to use African~American Singers in this Production - use WHITE face. I have the SAME PROBLEM with the recent LUCIA - it's not period - it jars!

Leontine Price used appropriate make-up for "Butterfly" - imagine it otherwise?

Same thing here! No reason why an African-American singer cannot become Caucasian German [!] on Stage.

  • 45 users salute Landgrav Hermann

  • Can someone tell what production this is? I would want to get a CD of it. Thank you

  • Is Eva Marton on this recording?

  • @magikopa

    Yes, she is Eva marton.

  • Typical Met production - too much money and no imagination. This looks like a 'History for Schools' programme from the 1960s.

  • hail richard wagner, greatest german composer. proud to be german because of him!

  • @YourDad25

Wrong! The greatest german composer was Ludwig van Beethoven

and he was half a dutch.

  • @Erwin78609

how could beethoven be the best german composer when he was only part german?

would you say jimi hendrix is the best native american guitarplayer because i was part cherokee?

  • Une très belle mise en scène sur une musique absolument superbe !!! Quand le Met rencontre LE maître !

  • yo tengo este DVD, está muy bien

  • Ca c'est de la mise en scène belle et adaptée à l'oeuvre.

  • It doesn´t really looks like the Wartburg.... :-) One should read it to know where it is. But the music is great!

  • it's a Deutsche Grammophone release. You can find it every major shop.

  • Where can I get a DVD of this? It's amazing.

  • Ah yes, Ive seen this production several times- one of the best!

  • This production of TANNHAUSER is one of the most scenically beautiful opera productions I have ever seen.

  • Elisabeth is Eva Marton.

  • On a tour of Germany two years ago we visited the Wartburg. As we entered the grand hall the entrance of the guests was playing over the PA system. With a shock I suddenly realized that this was THE Wartburg of Tannhauser fame. There really is such a place.

    And what heavenly music.

  • Dann hast du endlich einmal Bildung genossen.

    Typisch Amerikaner...

  • Say what?

  • He said "You finaly get some Education... charateristic for americans"

But dont mention it. Im shure he dont know every every important place in U.S. (for example Little Round Top).

The Wartburg has an important place in German History not only by that Opera)

Greez from Germany (visit out beautifull county :D)

  • bist du deiner Sache so sicher?....

  • I have to apologize for sinuc's behaviour. Please do not care. He is just a silly, lonely idiot!

It would be great, if there would be more productions like this at european stages. Unfortunately, it seems to be popular to take a composer's work and twist into something totally unrecognizable. So much about european culture!!!!!

  • Na brich dir mal keinen ab..

Hey und zur Bildung gehört auch dazu sein Gegenüber nicht zu titulieren...

  • Dann halte Dich mal dran!

  • Yes, although some houses are now more change resistant. In the Wagnerian repertoire Lohengrin seems to be the prime target.

  • @ GregOpera What you describe happens here in the US also. I'd have more respect for other versions if I could see evidence of the skill required to handle the traditional versions. Instead they settle for self-indulgent & amateurish modern interpretations that are insipid at best. Traditional interpretations of all art (and ethics, for that matter) are revered because they've been refined with respect & humility over many years to become sparkling examples of the creator's true genius.

  • @FERENCEFF

of course, what did you expect?

  • @FERENCEFF I wish I will be at the Wartburg Hall too!

  • @ricolee830104 My wife and I visited while touring around Germany a few years ago. We visited many of the towns noted for the great composers who lived there. With a little luck, you can do the same. Thank you for your comment.

  • Wunderbar! Danke!
