  • i feel like my religion is hijacked Errr.. :-/ this is humiliating !!

  • elizabeth and jane they're both look like Taya Rogers of Prissana of thai movie star

  • lol the mom does not fit the description in my mind but I do prefer this version i find it goes more into the decription and the 2008 version. I also do like the colin firth version as well

  • this is a very good adaptation.

the actress who play elizabeth here does a great job and fits the character in book (as few others here noted) .

going by comments it seems most ppl judge quality of production by the looks of actor plating darcy. i am sure that jane (and elizabeth) would have had witty things to say about that.

  • This Darcy is ugly. Maybe he's just not my cup of tea, maybe he's really not very handsome, but I don't like him at all. Colin Firth is perfect Darcy. The most handsome, expressive and cute (well, maybe Darcy don't have to be cute, but I want him to be cute. Sorry.). My #2 is Laurence Olivier in 1940's version of "P&P". I also don't like this Lizzy, Jennifer Ehle was too lovely...So, the best version is 1995 version, but at least this 1979 film is better then Knightley's one.

  • although this is my least favourite version, there really is a lot to enjoy in this production! thanks for sharing!

  • 2005 is the best one, keria knightly looks so beautiful (her neck is so long! jealous) and mr darcy just looks gorgeous in every scene. and plus the acting is amazing!

  • This is a good version story wise. BUT is a horrible production, this is like watching a PLAY on screen, as nearly all early BBC shows were at the time. It totally lacks a musical score during the picture and even sounds effects in the background are naught. You definitely know your on a sound studio with the lighting, the total quietness, its shot in video and the outdoor scenes in film. All of the newer versions are much more enjoyable to watch but I have it on DVD to watch another version.

  • The 1940 Version is not at all faithful to the book ,this one is.

  • I love Austen´s books

Id love to have all the versions of the movies and series...

  • Am I the only one who likes the 2005 version??

  • @LovelyAlice831 now you have a companion. i'm another one who like that version too

  • @LovelyAlice831 the 2005 versionis beautifully done and i don't care it's not the most accurate, though colin firth was a good darcy, mathew mcfayden is the best ever and keira knightley is just a great elizabeth

  • I am sorry but I can't help not to laugh at this version of Mr.Darcy.When I have Collin in my mind, it's impossible to like anything else. But it is always interesting to watch another version , and see the story in different perspective.it would be interesting to see the Bollywood version LOL

  • I really don't like this version of mr darcy at all. I mean, it's like the actor just learned his lines and just repeated what he had learn with no feeling(as most of the other actors as well), while in the 1995 version of pride and prejudice you can see everything Mr. Darcy feels just by watching Colin Firth's face.

Colin Firth will be my favourite Darcy, always.

  • it's always interesting to see other versions of a story we like

  • Darcy is nearly always 'silent, grave and indifferent'

  • This was the best and most agreeable adaptation for me. Liked all the Bennet sisters in this one, not so in the 95 version or the Knightly one, and the music credits in the beginning and end are so endearing and well suited to the time that no other version can match this one.

So pleased i have it on DVD.

  • Mathew Macfadyen is the best Mr. Darcy and then Colin firth's version is next best.... it is hard for me to watch any other version

  • Thanks so much for this little snippet! I want to see the whole movie! If you have it, can you please upload it? :D

  • I'v seen the first three epi's of this version, but I couldn't like it! With Collin and Matthew in my head, I just can't like this mister, and the acting is terrible. They are just saying their lines, without really acting. But, I can't imagine a series of P&P that I do not love, so I'll try to watch again. xD

  • Darcy is ugly

  • worse acting ever they completely trashed the story

  • wow this mr darcy is hott too! how many versions are there? mr binglely is hott also.

  • I can't belive that there is a version of P & P which I haven't seen. I'm in total shock LOL can anyone put it here? I wish I could see the whole thing. Although MM and CF can't be beaten as Darcy, this one here looks really interesting.

  • lizzy looks a bit cross eyed..but i would like to see the whole series..

  • @BinatHalev

You know, I couldn't put my darn finger on what was bothering me about her face... it was her EYES as you say! LOL! But I do still think she is attractive.

  • Every person that reads any book has their own version of the characters, regardless of what a book says. As for me, the Darcy I saw was more along the lines of Mathew McFadyen and Sean Penn. (I know, weird combination.) But still hot in meh-head.

  • good god the production value is so lame. no offense though. hahaha. acting is quite good.

  • David Rintoul definately makes a more acurate Mr Darcy, and I think is actualy quite handsome, but I still prefer Colin Firth as best. His eyes are so beautiful.

  • I actually saw this version before the A&E version with Colin Firth came out. This is definitely a very close second to the A&E production. I actually love Rintoul as Darcy, and I don't think he's bad looking. Haha! If you notice the first part of this production, he actually looks much better because his hair is better, and then for some reason his hair is off the rest of the production. I really do enjoy these older BBC productions. This is definitely a more theatrical approach.

  • Thank you for upploading this clip, The 1980 version of Pride And Prejudice is the only version I have yet to see.

  • It seems good and Lizzy is very pretty but... I don't like what they did with my Darcy :(

  • Jane es realmente muy bonita en esta versión. Saludos!!

  • The actress laying Kitty is Tessa Peake Jones, who is best know for marrying Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses. David Rintoul (Darcy) later starred in a remake of Dr Finlay. I don't know what happened to Elizabeth Garvie.

  • Mr. Darcy is ugly in this one :(

  • I like this version as a lot of the actors and actresses are rsc trained and speak correclly with voice ontonation correct.

  • Eww

  • I love this version, too- I saw it when it was first aired on Masterpeice Theater in 1980 - at the time I was 19 years so I loved it, the costumes, etc. When the 1995 came around I was also impressed-I like them both- 1980 screenplay is closer to original book. If you want to see UGLY dresses, 2005 wins the prize - LIzzie looks so ugly in all those brown, drab dresses ans the her hairstyle is appalling - she wearly wears period bonnets or jewelry and looks more like servant. Flat-chested, too.

  • I don't like quite much the dresses, they seem too simple to me... anyway, it is teh only version i've seen so far where all teh girls really seem like sisters...

  • The Lydia in this version has got to be the worst actress on the planet :-( But I prefer this Mrs. Bennett to the 1995 one.

  • I adore this version ! It is closer to the novel and allows nothing to modern times tastes. I like very much the composed manners of actors's speaking and moving around, nothing to do with the brisky, noisy ones of modern versions. Darcy is exactly how I imagined him : proud and stiff, melting only in the end...Very nice also the soundtrack and the cartoons introducing to the story. Absolutely a great production to me !

  • Thank you! Please post some more, it's so interesting to see another version!

  • can anyone tell me how to watch this version free?

  • humm...I didn´t watch this version. I only watched the 1940 and the 2005 and I liked them both. But i really would like to see the 1995 bbc version. Everyone talks so well about it! Does anyone know where can i download it? Thanks.

  • its on youtube..... try searching for "Pride and Prejudice 1-1"

  • The footman/butler who introduces them always cracks me up. He sounds like he only just learnt how to talk and had to struggle to perfect his two lines. Lol

  • Darcy looks so creepy!

  • um.. why is Jane not light haired? i thought Lizzy was the brunette to match her strong independent, fearless and adventures character and Jane was the blondy with classical looks to suit her mild feminine nature.. However Jane is very pretty in this version but not Eliza :( Neither is Darcy actually.. he just looks stuck up and at a loss for words, nothing attractive about him.. Collin is way better for a Darcy with his condescending expression and "critical" brow ;)

  • This is because I begin to confuse which wonderful version I watched and remember so vividly. And what I recall in YouTube is, 1980, 1995, and 2005 are not the version. o.O

  • Any piano part? I mean the part where the Elizabeth plays piano and teases back the old fussy lady which praises too much about (how well she plays her piano and her daughter did play! But sucks, hahaha!) her own daughter, which firstly going to engage with Darcy (Darcy's cousin).

  • My absolute favorite version of Pride and Prejudice. I was raised on this one and I think this Mr. Darcy is the most handsome and plays the part the best!

  • Hm...this mr. darcy isn't that handsome, but i think he is the most graceful darcy of all these versions...in the book he's also described as very elegant,so i think that this mr. darcy is quite good...and apart from that his facial expressions are what i expected too...the 1995 version is great too,though...

  • I like Mrs. Bennet best in this one, she seems the most like a real woman.

  • Nice to see that Lizzie is blonde and Jane is the brunette for once!!!

  • I can't help it - Colin Firth is Mr Darcy in my mind. So nothing in this version is going to beat that I'm afraid.

  • i think the actor for darcy in this version was brilliant..you just have to watch the whole thing

  • Yeah, Jane Austen never said Darcy was handsome, just very refined and aristocratic looking. I think this Darcy is THE ONE. Collin Firth was such a sappy Darcy - seriously! IF you disagree, go and read the original book - then you'll know what I mean.

  • Agreed!

  • i dnt like this one as much as the 1995 one mr darcys much better lookin!!!! lol ;)

  • god this is horrible.....

    bad acting

colin and firth and jennifer ehle will always be fitzwilliam and elizabeth

  • er, don't u mean, darcy and elizabeth? ^.^ fitzwilliam was his cousin.

  • Aloud me to say. Mr. Darcy´s first name is also Fitzwillian =)

  • @myh3artb3ats fitzwilliam is mr darcy's first name.......

  • This is a brill version you really need to see the whole thing & not judge on small clips.Mrs Bennett is the best by far & there are some real comedy moments. Liz totally fits book description - 'sweetness & archness' & Darcy does disgust with his manners & pride! Some most important scenes better here eg 2nd proposal & revelation of elopement scene. Bennett Sisters very funny here too.

  • @fidelma37 True. Pity the costuming is so awful.

  • i dont like this one as much as the 1995 one.

  • I really liked versions (1940 (movie) and 1995 (BBC mini series).

  • I know you wrote this two months ago...I have to agree, I love the 1995 version. I believe it is the best one, but I have to disagree on the 1940 one. I honestly couldn't get through it. It was very, very cheesy, and it cut out many important parts, while adding parts they made up.

Eh, just adding my two cents.

  • Yes, quite cheesy -I have to agree with ya! And the costumes were all wrong - so 1940's! The 1980 & 1995 versions have similar feels and I like both for different reasons. I think 1980's dialogue is clser to the book, though. I liked the 1980 Jane character and Lydia was very well-played, too. So fun to watch again here on youtube after so many years.

  • Why do you say the costumes are wrong ? I found them marvellous and prettier compared to the 1995 version.

  • Jane is altogether too forward...Jane is supposed to be calm and composed more so than she was earlier in the movie...here this beautiful lady seems to welcome him unabashedly!

  • Darcy looks quite draggish and he isn't even dressed as a woman, this version fails.

  • how many pride n prejudices were made??

  • many-many-maaaannny :)

  • There are four different movies that I know of.

  • Hello, does anybody know the link to watch these whole series of P&P 1979 in You Tube? It´s fabulous. Thank you.

  • 2.11mr Bingley is holding his hat just in front of his ****, i know it's silly but i couldn't stop laughing lol

  • Xp I don't like it...

  • I love how Mrs. Bingley is so happy to see Bingley, but when she looks at Darcy she's like "Oh...YOU'RE here."

  • LOL, yeah! Although I think you mean Mrs. Bennet, not Mrs. Bingley. ;-)

  • Ah! Thanks for pointing that out. LOL! I'm silly!

  • Haha! It's okay - you're not silly, anyone might make that kind of mistake! :-)

  • Haha! The Mr. Bingley in this version is so sweet and charming! :-)

  • I like Mary, the rest is awful!

  • 2005 version is the best!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow, that was deplorable! the 1995 version is totally the best!!!!

  • I love this Elizabeth! Only a woman would say the 1995 Elizabeth is better.

  • I am a woman, and I think Elizabeth Garvie's Elizabeth is definitely the best! ;-)

  • me too

  • I really like this version. Definitely my favourite Elizabeth and if the manners appear stiff and formal, that's because they would have been in those days. I also think the dialogue is far superior to the 1995 version and generally remains truer to the original text. We were shown this version at school so I have a particular fondness for it.

  • says in the book: "The gentlemen pronounced him to be a fine figure of a man, the ladies declared he was much handsomer than Mr. Bingley, and he was looked at with great admiration for about half the evening, till his manners gave a disgust which turned the tide of his popularity; for he was discovered to be proud; to be above his company, and above being pleased; and not all his large

estate in Derbyshire could then save him from having a most forbidding, disagreeable countenance,"

  • Doesn't Elizabet squint?:D and mr darcy's curly hair is funny:D

  • Oh dear I couldn't even tell Mrs Bennet was Mrs Bennet! (I thought she was one of the girls at first!) And she seems a bit too smart to play her. Oops Jane looks like she wants to rip Bingley's clothes off.

  • No.

  • But I think he is. really. I'd probably laugh out loud if I met him face-to-face.

  • Ah, but Mister D'arcy has many fine qualities. To judge him according to physiognomy alone is surely a prejudice which only pride itself countenances.

  • Lytton, dear --

    1) Mr. Darcy, not Mister D'arcy, is the correct spelling

    2) Mr Darcy may have any number of fine qualities, which he does in the book, but in this screen adaptation I find him so hideous that his acting quite exacerbates it

    3) It is a prejudice, indeed -- but life itself is prejudiced. Get used to it.

  • in the book Darcy is a handsome man, which beauty and richness are only eclipsed by his pride and his manners.

they must work better in this version, because he doesn't look like a Darcy at all....

so i agree with StrangerToEarth , about the year (1979) i think it's not the problem: 1940's one it's good too, an it was made long before this version

  • Didn't care for Mr. Darcy in this one. I love Colin Firth in the 1995 version, but I also thought that Matthew Macfayden was really good, you have to watch his eyes..

  • oh me neither! I love Colin Firth and I haven't seen Matthew in too many movies but I think he really captured mr darcy in the 2005 P&P

  • this mr darcy puzzles me. he seems so...young, he looks somehwat childish

  • It kind of screams eighties all over it, I can't say why.. I once read a recap of this version in which the writer constantly named this Darcy the Jaw. I cannot keep a straight face while looking at him ever since ^^

  • This is the best Pride and Prejudice ever. Nicely understated. The hair of Elizabeth and Jane is beautiful, truly crowning glory on two lovely girls.

They just don't make them like that anymore.

    (sigh)

  • lol, is that Kitty batting her eyelashes at Bingley? lol! I wanna see this version... :(

  • Haha true. I first thought Kitty is Jane when she was staring like that! I wanna see it too!

  • I think that almost every 10 years a new version of Pride and Prejudice is produced. And each new production reflects the ideas of the new audience. I have seen all the versions, and like this one the best. And I love all of Jane Austin's works.

  • I rather like this one. I think Mrs. Bennet and Elizabeth were perfect. Mr. Darcy....well no one besides Firth has nailed him yet.

  • very true about Firth being Darcy - absolutely right for the part

  • Hear, hear!

  • Colin Firth is forever Darcy for me!

  • I love Elizabeth Garvie as EB.

  • Be kind, you guys! This was made BEFORE the 95 version, and even thought I like the 95 version better, this one is done very well. Some parts are a bit more faithful to the book, even.

It was also a different time when it was made, so that always affects the look of the whole film.

  • By today's standard, this 1979 version look like a low-budget soap. sound quality, settings remind me of BBC sitcoms. I wonder the costumes in 1979 are authentic or not. I heard the 1995 version has the best & authentic costume design. 2005 version Kiera's wild hairdo without a cap is really not 'fashionable' in that era.

  • True, but this is by far closest to the book, which makes it the best in my mind. Elizabeth Garvie was a perfect Lizzie. The rest of the cast was good too.

  • eww. darcy is UGLY.

  • I can't help laugh at Mr darcy in this one - 1995 rules i think. Colin firth is Mr Darcy

  • Mrs Bennet looks like an old mouse...and Jane's very mediocre...veeeery British 'beauty'

  • She's beautiful.... What is a 'beauty' in your mind? The bleached and blonde calendar girls that pass for actresses in hollywood?

  • Yes, please, can you upload more videos from this version? Jane's beauty is more enhanced and Lizzie is quite interesting...but Mrs Bennet is not very annoying.

  • can you upload more videos from this version?
