At the same time, it may be legal to have sex with someone, but illegal to take their picture, as that would be considered child pornography. Sex and marriage allowances for age are often different. It's not as simple as "sex with minors is bad."
Considering his wide-spread influence, I don't see why. It obviously attracted attention, and the first step to discussion is acknowledging a problem's existence. Obviously he took the shock value over the actual positions of the organization, or he would have stayed.
People are usually fine with talking about other topics. Anything involving minors and sex is taboo. Alan did enjoy turning people's heads, after all.

It's no secret that Ginsberg was a member of NAMBLA. He said he joined only to stand up for their freedom of speech and expression and once doing so he quit. I don't agree with NAMBLA or Ginsberg's ideas on it but he sure did write some great stuff.

He didn't support NAMBLA's position, he joined them for a short time because he believed in their right to free speech and wanted to officially show that, and himself added that he hoped his membership would spark discussions about American laws about sexuality and youths. He quit when he thought his point had been made. He never said he supported pedophilia.

America in itself doesn't have as clear rules as one would think. Age differences vary among the states, after that, if you are an adult within a certain age you're still allowed to have sex with minors within a certain age range. At the same time, it may be legal to have sex with someone, but illegal to take their picture, as that would be considered child pornography. Sex and marriage allowances for age are often different. It's not as simple as "sex with minors is bad."

As a musician and artist, I'm very influenced by the not only creativity, but the sheer solidarity of the beats (Cassady, Kerouac, Ginsberg, etc). I only wish that spirit of freethought and creativity would live on in current milieux. It's great to hear Leary, Depp and Thompson comment on him.

Allen Ginsberg was a human being. He loved life and poetry, wrote and spoke well, and became well-known and loved in his time alive.
