My father started me with gun safety and shooting at about 3 y/o. We are from So Cal, and not gun nuts. He just thought it was important, like teaching your kids to swim. I have had to respond a couple times with my firearm in unexpected situations. Thank you dad.
The mother was wrong for leaving children this young home alone. But she or someone close in the family did teach the ten yr old at least some sort of gun safety and defensive use. Most 10 yr old boy's wouldn't have had knowledge of how to use a gun correctly or think of using it in this situation. Maybe she didn't teach the ten yr old, and it was by God's grace that he knew what to do.
@rushgrip, its was by his parents educating him that he knew what to do. It was by God's Grace that he had the courage to do it. I'm 37, when we were kids we stayed at home by ourselves. Only in America is it ABUSE & neglect to expect your children to be intelligent, competent & self reliant.
Its not wrong to let your children be in their very own home alone.
@tmomof6 lol...agreed. I'm 21 and my grandparents raised me. I did live in a small town, but my grandparents told me never to answer the door to any body. Police came knocking once and I wouldn't even let them in. (I was 8)

FYI i have had this happen when I was 14 and it's the most natural thing in the world to get out a gun to defend yourself when you are scared.
Parents will get arrested? Policemen need to understand untrained civilians aint going to think about the law when two armed men break into their house.
