You can play single without internet but there currently is no LAN play for sc2 and they also currently have no plans for it. Sux for college students.

Well, it's easier to get ahold of people you want to play with, you don't have to use a bunch of other mediums like MSN for instance. You can chat directly with the people you wanna play with.
