It was a staunch US ally under the rather corrupt and militant Shah, who was put into power thanks to a coup backed by the CIA in the 1950's. @fenwick23 Iranian constitution of 1906 modeled on the Belgians gave the king the right as his duty to appoint & sack all PrimeMinisters so no PrimeMinister in Iran was ever elected. The Shah twice appointed Mosadegh as his PrimeMinister. The reigning king does not need to stage a coup unless he is overthrown by an illigual coup. What happened than was a counter coup & had nothing to do with the USA.
