  • mañana dia 3 me examinan para cinturon marrón estoy super nervioso, tengo 13 años, nos han dicho que va a caer jion, basai dai, los 5 heian y tecnicas que nos dira el maestro ;) deseadme suerte jajajaja

  • our intro is a balance move but this is kool too..

  • wow has anyone noticed that people who train in japan always seemed to perform it much better to anywhere else ? must be tht its thier martial art to begin with and they have great passion for it

  • thats a perfect demo of the kata learnt it tenyears ago thats it move for move

  • WOW this is the only good video i've seen of a dude that actually know's bassai dai!!! all the others can just fuck off

  • @hltdude09 while I agree that this is an amazingly good execution of Bassai Dai (hey, this is Kagawa Sensei!!!), you should know that there is a lot other great videos of this kata here on youtube. Look into videos of Kawasoe, Kanazawa, Osaka, Kawasaki Norio (to mention just a few) Senseis, and you'll see.

  • This is 100% Shotokan. The person performing it is Kagawa Sensei of JKS. Excellent!!

  • @bstrac77 yes, Shotokan at it's best :)))

  • This is Shotokan Bassai Dai

  • i learnd this kata vhen i had yelow belth that was last year i think its prety easy to know how to do it but prety hard to do it whit all the details

  • @SamuraiJapan100 It might be, though I don't see the kanji on his gi. It looks pretty similar to the Kyokushin Bassai Dai, but other styles have this kata under the same name and perform is differently.

  • @SamuraiJapan100 The name "Bassai", couple with the reverse of Sho and Dai as compared to Shuri-te suggest Shotokan.

  • nice

  • Awesome cheers. I'm going for Orange next but we're learning this anyway.

  • i do shukokai karate and this is my kata - i am 3rd brown belt - wish me luck for my black belt !!! its a long kata - bassai dai is japanese for battling the fortress !

  • aew

  • Bassai Dai is our blue belt kata i gotta leearn this for my next belt in 2-3 months :-S ............. where do i start ? lol

  • in the spring im testing for my black belt and i need to do this kata kan ku dai, hangetsoo, amd empi srry my spelling isnt right

  • anyone know the breathing count or time count for bassai dai

  • The counts are in the "Best Karate" series by Sensei Nakayama

  • Im doing kan ku dai

  • this is the first kata i learned

  • woooow, that's cool! Now, you can keep practicing and learning more difficult Kata... so, one day you may even try Taikyoku Shodan!

  • eyy dude.sorry but this kata is way more advanced than taikyoku shodan..taikyoku the white belt kata and bassai dai is brown belt kata ..!! os.

  • this is a brown belt kata i stated to learned it wen i was a purple belt and finished wen i was a red/brown

  • im learning basai dai at the moment

i can normally remember katas pretty easily but this ones slightly harder. its a nice kata though.

i think i can remember it all now. :)

  • @izzzzzzzzzzzzzi yeah it btw wut belt r u?

  • @izzzzzzzzzzzzzi yes bassai dai is a good kata i did it in by 1 st dan grading and that got me my black belt keep going.

  • @izzzzzzzzzzzzzi hurrhurr good luck with Unsu or Kanku Dai

  • There are some little things they would complain if I did it so!

  • i think it wud be better if my style did this kata this way

  • Nice !

  • I have passed all my gradings with a distinction i am very lucku to have such great sensei's 3rd dan 4th dan and 5th and 6th dan instructors

  • How would you know, its not like thiers only one way of doing each Kata.

  • OSS !

  • Ha,ha I was practicing Bassai Dai in my basement and I forgot how it went! XD.

  • Grading tomorrow, this is my grading kata, this and Tekki Shodan.

  • Hope you did well!

  • I passed! :D

  • Congratulations!

  • This is a complex kata with relevant meaning and folks who don't see that are not paying the proper attention.

  • The difficult part is getting the techniques out of this kata, but this is a pretty easy kata...

  • i can do this kata!

  • when he has to move slow, hes slow, ok, but...

its me or when he has to do strong and quick moves he doesnt go fast enough???

  • This is a tutorial so all the guys who doesn´t know this kata, can look at it and maby learn it. I think this is from a video like a DVD you buy at a store

  • it aint hard. keep practising, and u'll get the hang of it

  • och ne, diese Kata brauch ich bei der nächsten Pfrüfung und die is verdammt schwer

  • I have try this kata before but it's very hard... And i don't know have i can't learn this kata

  • bassai dai aint hard

  • are you kidding! It's pretty easy compared to katas like Gojushiho dai or Kanku sho

  • One of the things that set this kata apart from many is the fact that movements aren't mirrored on both sides... very asymmetrical.

  • i done this kata for my black belt grading a couple months ago

well my version had 1 or 2 different moves but i enjoyed doing this kata

  • Heehee. I have try this kata Befor it's verry hard

  • i have my grading next week and i forget this, this has been a great help.

  • Oddly enough, we do this form at my TKD dojang as our Grandmaster did a lot of Tang Soo Do (essentially Japanese karate) and is a master of it. Interesting...

  • This is the brown belt 3 stripe kata which I'm learning ( = soon I'll be a shodanbo hopefully. And then 1-2 years later black o.o

  • wow holy crap in my style its a 5th kyu kata? wow

  • Good Kata!

I've been studying Shotokan Karate for 6-7 years now and I am testing for my black belt in the end of this September. Im considering posting some videos so I can get some positive feedback. Should I?

  • This guy is good, his position and execution are almost perfect, check how straight his back is all the time. Lacks little bit of strength and speed, but i am sure it is because this is an explicative demo and not a full power performance. 100% shotokan correctness.

  • it looked to me as if his shuto was wrong, this mght be how i was taught it tho. his hand at the back was quite high, shouldnt it be at hs waist ?

  • Not long ago shuto "had" to be more or less at middle of the body (just under the end of the chest bones), but it was changed back as how it was some 10 years ago, just over the navel or a little bit higher if u want. It had something to do with the shoulder position and the angle of the arm or something, i don't remember, but that is the current correct height.

  • oh okay, i thought id been doing it wrong all these years haha. im doing this for my grading on saturday, and i think ive pretty much nailed it. i only have to do the first half though, i struggle with the kick at the end, i get the hands wrong. but thank you anway

  • GREAT JOB!! I don't really care for this kata. I like Jion and Empi better. But my teacher is making me go through all of the katas I have learned so I had to watch this video to remember it. so THANKS for uploading it!!!

  • This kata is one of my favourites aswell as empi

  • uh when your a orange belt you should be practicing Hein Sundan not Nidan.

  • hmm...i saw my master do this...

  • it depends

    whats triple grading?

  • when you grade for a belt 2 above the one you should be. double would be grading for a belt one extra.

  • He didnt chamber for any of his middle blocks

  • good :] but my favorite is Heian Godan

  • ye shotokan ftw! :) i got this kate now i think i well be good at my exams...

  • had the black.. this routine is easier than it looks

  • Oh it's great I found this, I need to learn this kata for martial arts

  • im only an orange belt, going for a green belt pretty soon and I'm really interesting in learning this kata soon. there's more moves and action involved.

  • so r u doing heian sandan?

  • yeah i am

as an orange belt it was heian nidan

  • Yes, this is DA KATA for green belts to do in competition. I just passed to green belt (performing tekki shodan and its bunkai)and i am starting to learn bassai dai, is long but very stright forward kata. i like it a lot.

  • I'm so glad to see this fairly slow compared to some of the other kata videos I've watched tonight... after two years out, I'm trying to relearn everything I used to know, and having it a bit slower helped me put things back together. This was my brown belt kata when I was still actively training.

  • A lot of funny comments here. Guys, the person in the clip is Osaka sensei. He is one of the best kata guy you'd ever met on earth. In this kata clip, he took out power and speed just to show the moves very slowly, in very basic form. Search for his name on youtube and you will know what he could really do.

  • This is not Osaka Sensei, this is Kagawa Sensei during his younger days, but I agree with you regarding everything else you said. Also, Kagawa Sensei's kata is almost as good as Osaka Sensei.

  • Thanks for correcting me.

  • I'm a Black Belt 4th Dan.

This was my kata for when i was a Brown belt.

It needs power, Good stance, and very good sprit.

He needs to have more kumata and power.

    But good stances.

  • im brown dis my kata :)

  • Shotokan style relating to Shito Ryu style.

  • oss

  • it just needed some power and keymaa. well i'm only a brown belt so...

  • u need better stance and power ;)

  • Yep, it lacks power, but the stance is perfect. remember this is a demo to teach.

  • hey sory for this comment but juz wanna tell the truth....ur kata will be nicer wif more power....n ur stance muz be perfect....ur rely good....k? we r all learners....so we muz improve ourself rite??? tc bye

  • 100% Awesome im only a white belt.

  • Work at it in the dojo and home. Best advice you can get.

  • Thanks man =)

  • I had to do this Kata (in addition to the other 7 before it) yesterday to get my 2nd Brown belt (2 white stripes). It was a tough grade!

  • same but i had to do mine today

  • How did you get on?

  • i passed 6months then im takin brown two red stripes

  • We don't use stripes for brown belts here, from brown you go directly to black and then all the dans. i supose is the same taht we have 5 levels for white belts before they can go yellow :p

  • Had a gold medal once in this kata and on tekki shodan!!!!still love that shoto uke stuff!!!!nice vid!!!

  • I am Brown and white belt, I had to do this kata for my grading, I'm gonna learn Jion on wednesday!

  • Im first brown belt. I know this kata, but not good.

  • I'm a green belt and I know this kata, kanku dai, enpi and wankan.

  • I'm an orange belt and I know it :|

  • your school is untraditional crap. <__<

you shouldn't be able to do any of this or even understand it D:

  • iam a green belt and i know this kata

  • if i graded like that with that much time in between moves would i pass?

  • A good club won't grade you on how fast you do the moves, but on their quality. When you know the kata very well you can add speed. Also, some katas have deliberate pauses built into their form.

  • k, so if i graded at the speed of this guy with good form and power, would i pass?

  • I'd say you'd have a pretty good chance! I'm only a first dan but it's been my experience that demonstrating good technique recieves the most praise - but bear in mind different katas have different speeds, each is geared towards a particular kind of defence so they all emphasise power/speed in different measures. Also you're clubs probably been watching your development all the way through, they'll know how good you are, so don't worry about making a mistake here and there!

  • My reply's further up the page, stupid website doesn't make it very clear where your comments are going to appear! :-(

  • "i do GKR (Go-Kan-Ryu) in the UK. And we call this Bassai Dai, not Shotokan.

P.S. Im not trying to be offensive! "

    ...

is this boy below me a full blown retard?!...what the people were trying to say is that this kata is from "shotokan karate" and yes avcourse it is called bassia dai...idiot...

  • i do GKR (Go-Kan-Ryu) in the UK. And we call this Bassai Dai, not Shotokan.

P.S. Im not trying to be offensive!

  • Shotokan is the style of karate not the name of the kate....

  • i have this kata in my style and it isa shotokan kata

  • it is shotokan stupids !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • it's wado-ryu

  • I take Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Genbu-Kai and your version of Bassai Dai is almost like ours

  • i take hayashi ha shito ryu, but iv seen that style at tournaments

  • what style is this the one i learnt is different

  • i dont know, i take shotokan

  • This is an effective and fun kata for martial artists to do. The styles vary always, and are still slightly updated within styles sometimes. It's unfortunate to see the loss of appreciation, and the rise of critical junction.

  • süper bi kata!!

  • This was my tournament kata for a very long time.

  • wow! katas are evolving, ever changing.. no mater how hard senseis try.. our version of bassai dai is a bit different, sorta how stories change as they are being told from one person to another. anyway, this was pure pleasure to watch!

  • its great kata.

    yes.tath is a shotokan style.

His leags is to high, but everything else is OK.

  • thing id like to point out: starting his hands should be at chest level, palms down. other then that it looks flawless

  • re: his hands. That's the correct way to do it JKA style. Some styles start the way you suggest, other start like this video.

  • 80's sometime. Official JKA stuff...

  • how old is the actual video ?
