@Superguitarguy91 when doing solo stuff, crack the mids..try it. Usually the tone you think is gay or shit is the one that translates well to tape.

@DougFCKNSteele Im using a VOX Valvetronix VT series (Not quite sure which exact one it is -.-) but playing it at the Numetal preset with a Zakk wylde overdrive pedal on aswell.

@Heavenlydimebag sounds like too much gain. you either need to lay off some of the gain or get a noise gate to cut out the horrible hiss.

Do you use economy picking too or only alternate? How strict are you in your alternate picking, do you play like Petrucci, who alternates everything but arpegs, or kinda like more laid back picking? Also, what strings do you use mostly?

I slip into economy when I need to, but for the most part it's all alternate picking. Watch Gilbert for alternate picking, his shit is seamless. I use ghs boomers 9-42 set.

@lordvivec87 I can do both, depends on what I'm playing. I alternaqte pick the majority of stuff, a la PG. I use 9-42, and I'm not a big JP fan.

Hey Doug, fantastic video. I was wondering if you could do a lesson elaborating more on the George Lynch/Eddie Van Halen pentatonics like you did at 3:31 - 3:35, 3:48 - 3:51? I love that sound but never understood how to get it, none of my six string wielding friends could really answer my questions or get a similar sound at all.

I've just got a guitar defretted and I'm having some problems with set up, strings and tuning so I'm asking every decent guitarist I find if they know anything about it. If you've got any spare guitars doing nothing, I'd recommend ripping it's frets out, they sound great and are lovely to play.

Sorry but in the extra notes for the Lynch/EVH sound, what were those notes? Didn't really catch it. Kinda looked like a Mixolydian + blue note thing.

That's exactly what it is after I posted it, ha ha, it's always the way, hindsight.

frets on both b and high e strings, 9, 10, 12, which is basically f# min, or E mixolydian.
