Luke is the greatest Irish singer ever to come out of Ireland. i am a Irish singer and trust me when you try to sing songs like him, you better get up early and by that i mean practising.
I don't think Luke seems confused on this video. He's very much in command of everything. I have really enjoyed this as I do all of his renditions over the years and I'm not even from his traditional background.
@Zesazerty When you can lilt rather than sing "a Rocky Road to Dublin" while keeping a consistence of passionate but not a over-zealous jaunty spirid about it, then i may consider giving you a new task, but i say emphaticallly that you will never beat Luke Kelly.
what a voice...what a man....true legend...my father in-law drank with him in dublin in the early 70's a true gent he was. I'm glad that my early years my father taught me these songs along with christy moore songs, the clancy brother's etc.... I am proud of my heritage and proud to say that Luke Kelly's brings a tear to my eye and joy to my heart. R.I.P Luke your soul shall live on in your music
@Inferno247 haha I haven't heard the first time! What a humourous singer, may he spend the eternity in the black peace of his peaceful and flowered grave.
Perhaps it originally referred to Irish laborers building railroads in Great Britain, but this song (in a different format and with a different chorus) has been a well-known folk song in America for as long as anyone alive today can remember.
I will say that the bulk of American folk music arose from roots in the British Isles.
fuck sake you cant help but love our trad its infectious well wer up to 90million claiments of irishness now but inky 3million got the green in our blood
Irish music is not just great for the Irish. I love it and know a lot of the lyrics of the songs by heart, used to sing my kids to sleep with Irish songs when they were babies. Though I've never been to Ireland...
I can tell something wasn't quite right in this vid of Luke. If he did have the operation before this concert then it would explain him looking confused a bit on stage. Rest in peace Luke and may your music always bring happiness and comfort to those of us still here on earth.
@kellyoneill I don't think Luke looks confused, but the sides of his face don't match. The right side of his face is more swollen than the left side. That could have been a sinus infection, though.
"In eighteen hundred and forty-one! *mutter* "When Ronnie Drew was born." Haha good song though and platformen don't say up the ra they're gone and hopefully forever.
God Blees to you Luke, you spread your laughter and your wonderful voice all over the world. You will never be forgotten in our hearts. God speed and send som love to Ronnie too.
i just only want to say thank you to all the irish artist,i'm from italy cheers to all irish people......thank you ronnie, thank you luke and thank you shane!!!!
PorscheJochen, I read that Ciaran had a brain hemorrhage in 74, he never really recovered and was unable to perform. According to the article the Dubliners never stopped paying him, nor would they consider replacing him until his death in 88. If thats true they sure were some loyal friends!
I play a similar song called 'Philamiooriay' which is a lot faster and uses most of the lyrics to the verses as they are on here. Interesting to hear another version. My version is entirely in G and Am so is a doddle to play - this seems similar although with an occasional C thrown in but it'd be good to hear people singing this sort of thing live again.
Ya haven't lived until you see Luke's blastful voice on a 8ft screen accompanied with surround sound speakers! Were studying Kavanagh as a Leaving Cert poet and were watched Luke sing Raglan Road, the majority of my class hadn't heard him before but they were awestruck!Luke just sung as normal in my life but the people in my class didn't no what was happening. My teacher even asked me for a loan of my Performer to copy the DVD to show to the rest of her classes!Just simply magical!

Luke Kelly, The Soul
(Written: november 2006)
A song of that Bird alone
The Irish red haired Lion
The Soul of Ireland who sang about Hope and grief with Passion
Truth in the world so painful and hard as Stone
You sang with Tears in the Eyes
Even battles in your Songs
And also courses with deep Cries
about the feeling Rights and Wrongs
poetry77 3 years ago
When you were Singing it was your soul who Spoke
Pure Magic words straight from the Tongue
while your Heart started to bleed, Sometimes
Your eyes closed and almost melt to one with you face
Such beautiful pieces
With such Poetic and such Clearly rhyms
Luke Kelly
