Second, Russians use equipment from 80's? Well yes, they do some of them, like BMP-2, but it is upgraded BMP-2M or BMP-3, BMDs, AK-74M is from 90's, if Russians needed new equipment they would already used them, but they dont need them. USA doesnt use newer, M16A2, A4 are old.

Reliability was increased greatly with the M-16a1, but was still prone to melted barrels due to it being fully automatic, and the draftees being under the impression that fireing randomly on full auto was a good idea. After 'Nam the m-16a2 variant was fielded with a single fire and three round burst option better suited for regular army forces, along with the M-4 and SOPMOD variant and attachments for Special Operations.

@XXAndriuchaXX Well in your Vietnam example you said AK-47 so i assumed you meant AK-47. The design it'self of all AK variants i have seen is very similar, and is designed for CQB. This is not a bad thing it is certainly usefull in the conflicts we see currently going on in the Middle East. The M-16 is a relic for lack of a better term of a by gone era. An era in which war with the Soviet union seemed inevitable. Russia's vastness destroyed Napoleons army of a million.
@MrJohn2010 Dont forget that Spetsnaz ALFA can get foreign equipment also like MP5's, M16's,Sig's.AK-47 was used in CQB but Russia's armed forces demanded something that uses smaller rounds to give way for mid range accuracy, giving birth to the AK-74. Spetsnaz required something lighter and more accurate, but variants like AK-103, 105 , AK-74's would do for them(since 107/9 and above are still prototypes).AS VAL and Vintorez is Spetsnaz favorite weapons...
@999cheetos999 This is entirely true, However my offense was due to the OP's use of the AK-47 as superiour to the M-16 and it's variants, and frankly storming a room sprinting and barrels pointed down seems a bit dumb. I don't remember if that clip was in this video, but regardless i find that the Russian tactics would not work for a lot of nations with smaller Special Forces units. Russia IMO should focus on streamlining they're forces into combat effective forces, and not relying on numbers.

Numbers with win that war at present, and the Chinese have those numbers. They have some fine weapons platforms but a more well trained force is key. The Spetznaz are a step in the right direction.
@MrJohn2010 The Spetsnaz with a high number of units are probably MVD, VDV . It is because these SF are mostly expendable soldiers and they are trained for war(due to high levels of conscription). But what I remembered, even though VDV is seen as a large army, they are a force to be reckoned with. They are combat effective, their bravery is seen in Hill 776 and other operations. ALFA and GRU in my opinion are the best trained(and ALFA is a relatively small group).
@999cheetos999 I don't doubt their bravery, the Soviet/Russian army has never lacked courage. The problem lies in overall russian reliance on huge armies. I am not familar enough with Hill 776. If you have the time could you relay what occured there? I have been busy lately and have been unable to do a lot of research.
@MrJohn2010 It was about 91 VDV units against a whole invasion, about 2500+ chechen rebels tried to break through from Ulus Kert. 7 VDV units survived and 500-700 Chechens were killed.Almost at the end of the battle they were using melee due to lack of ammo.And the VDV asked if all artillery fire be redirected to them.
@999cheetos999 Ah, Chechnians. Yes they are rather bothersome. Though the chechens are for the most part ill equiped and ill trained that is most impressive. Russians of course train for melee better than most nations (seems to be the thing among asiatic nations) this is the kind of thing Russia needs to expect if relations break down with China. A well equipped small force like the force of VDV at hill 776 is almost certainly able to hold out against a massive force.
@MrJohn2010 Now obviously they coudent stand toe to toe with a Chinese force of a million or so, but that is definatly a start. Spetznaz overall are a superiour force to regular army units, and can perform the raid type tactics they are meant for, but the Russian regulars and Spetznaz need to focus more on specialization as a whole. Im not suggesting adopting the M-16 or any of it's variants as that may be too big a step for regulars, but a smaller force is less expensive to maintain.
@MrJohn2010 As such money could be reallicated to weapon system development and training for the army, and God knows the Navy is neglected. Overall Russia needs to downgrade numbers, increase training, increase equipment quality (though quality is not bad as things are), and maintain freindly relations with Beijing as long as possible. Freindly relations with neighboring powers like India, or Pakistan (wouldent suggest Pakistan due to stability), Taiwan mayhaps, and of course the U.S.

Under extreme conditions of ice, mud, dust, the M16 is prone to jamming and requires a heck lot of maintenance, not to mention its more fragile compared to the AK. AK47 dosent need much maintenance, and could go over half a year without cleaning, its reliable and there was an account of it firing even when the wooden handle was smoking from the heat, try THAT M16!

Second, Russians use equipment from 80's? Well yes, they do some of them, like BMP-2, but it is upgraded BMP-2M or BMP-3, BMDs, AK-74M is from 90's, if Russians needed new equipment they would already used them, but they dont need them. USA doesnt use newer, M16A2, A4 are old.

Zenith and ALFA lost no more than 5 men. Only GRU entered Tajbeg Palace with full body armor.

After 'Nam the m-16a2 variant was fielded with a single fire and three round burst option better suited for regular army forces, along with the M-4 and SOPMOD variant and attachments for Special Operations.

@MrJohn2010 Now the M-16a2 is one of the most popular rifles in the world right up with the AK-47 and it's variants. Infact Taskforce RANGER faced both AK, and M-16 fire in the Battle of the Black Sea/Mogadishu. The M-16 is more precise than the AK, but the ak i would say is the superiour CQB combatant. Personally i prefer the M-4 for room clearing but all are excellnt weapons as proven by their world wide popularity.

@XXAndriuchaXX Well in your Vietnam example you said AK-47 so i assumed you meant AK-47. The design it'self of all AK variants i have seen is very similar, and is designed for CQB. This is not a bad thing it is certainly usefull in the conflicts we see currently going on in the Middle East. The M-16 is a relic for lack of a better term of a by gone era. An era in which war with the Soviet union seemed inevitable. Russia's vastness destroyed Napoleons army of a million.

@MrJohn2010 Dont forget that Spetsnaz ALFA can get foreign equipment also like MP5's, M16's,Sig's.AK-47 was used in CQB but Russia's armed forces demanded something that uses smaller rounds to give way for mid range accuracy, giving birth to the AK-74. Spetsnaz required something lighter and more accurate, but variants like AK-103, 105 , AK-74's would do for them(since 107/9 and above are still prototypes).AS VAL and Vintorez is Spetsnaz favorite weapons...

@999cheetos999 This is entirely true, However my offense was due to the OP's use of the AK-47 as superiour to the M-16 and it's variants, and frankly storming a room sprinting and barrels pointed down seems a bit dumb. I don't remember if that clip was in this video, but regardless i find that the Russian tactics would not work for a lot of nations with smaller Special Forces units. Russia IMO should focus on streamlining they're forces into combat effective forces, and not relying on numbers.

@MrJohn2010 While this will work against small nations like Ossetia, God forbid relations break down with China, and they want oil. Numbers with win that war at present, and the Chinese have those numbers. They have some fine weapons platforms but a more well trained force is key. The Spetznaz are a step in the right direction.

@MrJohn2010 The Spetsnaz with a high number of units are probably MVD, VDV . It is because these SF are mostly expendable soldiers and they are trained for war(due to high levels of conscription). But what I remembered, even though VDV is seen as a large army, they are a force to be reckoned with. They are combat effective, their bravery is seen in Hill 776 and other operations. ALFA and GRU in my opinion are the best trained(and ALFA is a relatively small group).

@999cheetos999 I don't doubt their bravery, the Soviet/Russian army has never lacked courage. The problem lies in overall russian reliance on huge armies. I am not familar enough with Hill 776. If you have the time could you relay what occured there? I have been busy lately and have been unable to do a lot of research.

@MrJohn2010 It was about 91 VDV units against a whole invasion, about 2500+ chechen rebels tried to break through from Ulus Kert. 7 VDV units survived and 500-700 Chechens were killed.Almost at the end of the battle they were using melee due to lack of ammo.And the VDV asked if all artillery fire be redirected to them.

@999cheetos999 Ah, Chechnians. Yes they are rather bothersome. Though the chechens are for the most part ill equiped and ill trained that is most impressive. Russians of course train for melee better than most nations (seems to be the thing among asiatic nations) this is the kind of thing Russia needs to expect if relations break down with China. A well equipped small force like the force of VDV at hill 776 is almost certainly able to hold out against a massive force.

@MrJohn2010 Now obviously they coudent stand toe to toe with a Chinese force of a million or so, but that is definatly a start. Spetznaz overall are a superiour force to regular army units, and can perform the raid type tactics they are meant for, but the Russian regulars and Spetznaz need to focus more on specialization as a whole. Im not suggesting adopting the M-16 or any of it's variants as that may be too big a step for regulars, but a smaller force is less expensive to maintain.

@MrJohn2010 As such money could be reallicated to weapon system development and training for the army, and God knows the Navy is neglected. Overall Russia needs to downgrade numbers, increase training, increase equipment quality (though quality is not bad as things are), and maintain freindly relations with Beijing as long as possible. Freindly relations with neighboring powers like India, or Pakistan (wouldent suggest Pakistan due to stability), Taiwan mayhaps, and of course the U.S.

@MrJohn2010 Having this collection of Nuclear powers to support Russia would ward off nuclear warfare, that much is almost certain (unless of course they developed a system similar in concept to SDI). Again i hope relations maintain between the two Eastern powers, but it is always good to be prepared for that possibilty.

In fact he stated that both were good and bad in different situations. Also, how do you know he's American, and what does that have to do with his comment. @enjoiskate41 I wouldnt say that. It all depends on the environment. Under extreme conditions of ice, mud, dust, the M16 is prone to jamming and requires a heck lot of maintenance, not to mention its more fragile compared to the AK. AK47 dosent need much maintenance, and could go over half a year without cleaning, its reliable and there was an account of it firing even when the wooden handle was smoking from the heat, try THAT M16!

Now main weapon - AK-74m. Special forces like spetsnaz FSB uses AK-103(7.62), AK-105(5.45) and AK-74m. Spetsnaz GRU sometimes uses AKM and AKMS.
