We have some of Liberace's records from the 1950s and 1960s and I still like listening to them. For the most part they are played as the music was written. I think it was later in his career, his "Vegas era" was when he started adding all those extra arpeggios and flourishes, probably to entertain his Vegas audiences. But on his old records, you can hear his true talent; he was highly skilled and played with passion and emotion.
You're invited to a HILARIOUS free master class on the life and music of LIBERACE! Includes analyzations of classic performances and a house tour:) U will LOVE this, type in "Dave Frank" Liberace in YT
Liberace did not have to be a prisoner of the written sheet music or score. His trademark was his style. We came to hear and love the Liberace touch. Do we judge a person's art by his personal life? Or does his art stand alone regardless of his personal life? Then again does his personal life influence his art? I believe all of us are the product of all we do.
Listening to his music has brought back memories of my youth...and I'm not that old! I feel transported back to the '40's, with all the romance and emotion of that era.
liberace was a damn fine pianist. he was so much better than he was given credit for. hell, he was so good he was even given a role as a guest villain on the old batman tv series... :)
@doglantis1 Rhinestone piano, chandeliers, candelabra, ring on every finger, jeweled tuxedo do not say "understated" to me. Could he play the piano worth a damn? Sure. I wish there was a body of longer more serious works that he could be judged by.
NOBODY PLAYS IT WITH MORE EMOTION THAN ''VALINTINO''. LIBERACE WILL ALWAYS BE NO. 1 HIS INTERPRETAIONS ARE DIVINE.NUFF SAID.......THIS RENDITION IS POWERFUL AND STRONG, THE WAY IT WAS MEANT TO BE PLAYED. POWER, STRENGTH & EMOTION, W/ A HEAVENLY SWEETNESS...... IT'S BREATHTAKING.............................
His own interpretation is better than the original score in my opinion of The Warsaw Concerto by Richard Addinsell. He has put in his own varations in places and it works better than the original played by most other pianists.
It is my understanding that the Warsaw Concerto was played over and over on Polish radio until the Nazis over ran Warsaw. What irony if it is true. Such a masterpiece of music representing the heighth of culture, was playing while the Nazis hordes were obliterating all vestiges of magnificent, century's old cultures. Liberace provides us with one of the most beautiful renditions of this concerto,. .
from the first time i heard this, i fell madly in love with the sheer romanticism of the concerto. the fact that there was war as a backdrop added an irony and pathos that made me love it even more...like you're waiting for the concerto, and the movie, to end happily, with victory in war, love, and music.
@bckm54 I have read wikipedia about Liberace first in English, which says his mother Frances Zuchowska was not musically inclined, then I read the Polish wikipedia, which said she was a talented pianist , from other sources I know she frquently played at home and at parties and encouraged him to pursue carrier as a musician. Why is English-language wikipedia outwardly lying?
@wladys678 Dear W., Quote:at parties and encouraged him to pursue carrier as a musician. Why is English-language wikipedia outwardly lying? ... Where ever you get data from you always must verify its source including, Was I in fact an adopted child? Have I left the oven on? Does anything ring a bell? ... Wikipedia is a reference source, if you require specific fact-information you have to rely on Evidence and Motive, really (Jessica Fletcher). ... Cheers. from, del-boy.
My Dad, Bill Cheall, remembers this music in his war diary. "The huge, tented camp was in the desert, the inhospitable desert - no give, just take. There was a brick-built cinema and another large tent, which was the canteen. I remember one particular thing about the canteen. When I first went in a soldier was playing a piano and he played a tune I had not heard before - Warsaw Concerto. It made me think of home and I have never forgotten that time." I lbelieve the only time Liberace ever played this piece was on his early TV series. He sort of got away from the classics in his 'live' concerts in the later years - except for Chopin's music, who was his favorite composer.
A superb rendition of Warsaw Concerto by the best pianist of our time - Liberace! He had such a tremendous talent and could play anything - popular or classical. As if that was not enough, he was just about the nicest person you would ever want to know. That you for this great selection.
@keyboardmagic - Yeah, one of my favorite pieces, and never heard Liberace do this, always heard Liberace do a lot of Chopin. Hard to believe that Ol' Lee has been gone for 23 years now. He was a great performer.

Of course he is with a bit of variation, but you cannot fault him as a pianist, much better than Addinsell and much better accoustics
