I wish i heard this 10yrs ago, this is the type of music I like, well from that era anyway. I wish they played something like this in the clubs i go to
IM HERE CAUSE THIS IS AN ALL TIME CLASSIC FROM WAY BACK IN SUMMER OF 79 . IT WAS SO DIFFERENT FROM ANYTHING IN THE CHARTS IN THE UK OR ACCROS EUROPE . STILL DIFFERENT AND A MASTERPIECE TODAY
Classic new wave, post punk electric song....This album must be one of the best ever with Bowies Low and Iggy's The idiot. I know....we have a couple more of them. FANTASTIC !!!!!
Gary Numan and Tubeway Army came along and re-introduced melody and harmony into a very confused scene. This is a classic that will live with me for ever.
i have been listening to music well over 35 years since i was a kid and this is definitely in my top 10 best songs of all time. it is the best new wave song and one of the best dance songs as this song always made me want to dance. it disgusts me how the programmers in radio then and now (e.g. satellite radio and tv) would not play so many good songs but play the raunchy trash instead.
I think that this is the only song in history that has a midway 'talking bit' that I can actually stand... it was also one of the first records I ever bought... it's as fresh now as it was then! It was also ridiculed by people at the time who had mutton for frontal lobes, but what do those types ever know?! Great track, great guy.
30 years old and it sounds like it could have been written yesterday. So ahead of his time, shame it took so long for him to get the recognition he deserves, but atleast more and more people are finding out about the genius that is Gary Numan and I am glad. If only today's pop music was this inventive, creative, interesting and catchy.
@killingheroes In the lyrics that come with the album it says 'S.U.s', but I always thought 'issues' was cooler. How he says it. But yeah, I have no idea what it means.
@crampcake S.U refers to a lady named Sue who he was previously in a relationship with. But I can forgive your confusion as the lyrics to this song change almost everytime you read them. Especially that 'I put one white on line' bit
this song was always a dance song to me. makes me think of being in a bar while checking someone out and feeling a joyous, mellow feeling with this song playing loudly.
lil wayne, drake, nicki minaj and justin bieber we know u all disliked this cause u all wanted a guest spot guess what all of us werent even born when this came out suck it
Wow all these years I thought he was just some nameless one hit wonder. Fuck the over marketed music industry for branding this guy unfairly. Have you seen how he's portrayed? It's the reason I've missed genius, and my stomach feels sick with guilt. I can hear the influence of David Bowie. I'm thankful Gary had such musical influences because the children of today have nothing, not a damn thing. A beaver, and the country of Cyprus, and all of these parasites from the ghetto aren't music.
@aaronscrewme Well Done. Disciplined Folks Like Yourself are what this World Needs More of.
Yeah, Too many Kids think Rap is Music. Its Fun to see when My "Friends" Mature and Realize who they really are and move on from the "Hyphy" Phase...And Girls have almost No Positive Influences either. (I'm 23). Even for a Metalhead like me, Only 10% of Metal actually being put out is actually worth putting on a CD...
@aaronscrewme It's always cool to discover how good some one really is. NA really hasn't a clue to how popular he really is. Personally The Pleasure Principle is my favorite album with Cars actually being my least favorite tune (probably from overexposure I'm sure) Films M.E. great tunes, what am I saying the whole album is brilliant.
If ALL of your 'friends' on this site (or perhaps Facebook) were actually fictional & created by a powerful program would it MATTER? If it DOES matter WHY would it really matter if you never KNEW your 'friends' were electric?
-Gary was REALLY ahead of his time back in 1979 wasn't he...
been looking for this song soooooooo long knew the beat and stuff in my head but forgot who the hell played it FREAKING good give me the shivers every time
@RocketFoxStudio: Quit being a duche! Why should you care where he found the song or weather he's a fan or not. He apparently likes the song, that's what brought him here, so there isn't anything wrong with his taste. So what he's a little delayed, different media tangentially provide sources of music for people to enjoy. I don't see that as a problem at all. It let's the person expand their horizon and it helps the artist. How would you feel if some Mozart fanboy from back in his day call you
@emmyrenny no I really couldn't care less. if you look at the comments posted before mine, listeners said how they enjoyed hearing it back in the 80s. I'd only ever heard covers of this tune that aren''t anywhere near as good as the original and when I heard it all the way through for the first time recently, over 25 years after it was released, I really enjoyed it. My comment was directed at the original listeners...
@Rock4070 if a video game 30 years later is your only way to hear such good music then you have only luck to discover it and not any actual good taste to begin with. Numan > Need for Speed. Get it? got it? good.
@phailez no, but neither did I play one game, heard a song I liked, and then acted like a fake Numan fan who only knows that one song and tried to get thumbs up when no one else here mentioned NFS carbon. If you hear good music, where you found it doesn't matter. So go get thumbed up elsewhere. :P
@RocketFoxStudio How can someone be a fake fan? You either like something or you don't, if they do like one song logic says that they would continue to listen to their other songs. And before you assume as much no I didn't discover Gary Numan from need for speed.
gary looks like an icon in this picture...maybe a legnd with such a worthy track..gary numan has never sounded or looked as good as on that cover of replicas maybe age has no kindess.
@DollWillKillYou Yes, time moves on, that doesn't necessarily mean things get any better. This is how "Are Friends Electric" should always sound IMO. I don't think the NIN inspired piano version is any better than Numan's original; in fact it's not as good and the way he performs it live isn't as good as it use to sound in the early 90s. Of course I have my opinion, you have yours, and that's fine. People are entitled to their opinion.
Remember seeing them live at Preston Guild Hall in the late 70s early 80s.... an amazing set/show..... all the musicians were on their own podiums all at different levels... there was a support act who came on in an invisible man type mask and black suit with a big box and played a violin through a modular synth in the box... any one know who this guy was????????
@zedster911 I think you're talking about Nash the Slash. He played an electric violin in some of Gary's songs on tour. If you look up Micromusic - The Joy Circuit he plays near the end.
Lee Cooper Jeans, NME, Manchester Victoria Station, Manchester Poly in the late 70s, wishing I was proficient on my 21st Birthday pressy (Roland System 100 Synth) wishing, wanting, hoping... those are my memmories
