He uses his custom Telecaster with Dimarzio humbuckers. A Fender FM 25 amp. His affects include a BOSS Super Overdrive, a Chorus Ensemble (or some other form of chorus pedal), and a wah-wah pedal (Crybaby Classic if I'm not mistaken). Anything more you'd like to know? You could visit his website too, it has a full list of all gear he uses.

two questions....1.) how does he do pickup tapping and 2.) how does he do the chicken pickin from 3:35-3:40?

@jumbodieger 1.) I've tried it myself, and he's simply tapping the string hard enough for it to sound like a tone. He just uses the pickup as a directive so he knows where to tap. 2.) That's something that takes some practice. Firstly, the chicken picking is with the tones alternating, not playing at the same time, so you have to learn to alternate the finger picking. And he palm mutes the E string so it doesn't ring out.

Well, the first song I learnt was Damaged. It doesn't have any sweeping or that sweep tapping. Although it's still very hard. You need to play fast. You could try to play Young Thing if you have flexible fingers and good simultaneous capacity. But I don't really know. All his songs are challenging in some way.

Easiest John 5 song, I wouldnt attempt it without first consulting your physician,LOL Let's see how many summers do you have available. If you're not already playing in a band or near good enough too I would just try and cop some of his licks, the ones you like. If you dont do it by ear and use tab that might give you some of the right notes ( Tab often misses alot) but it wont give you the ability. Ever try country chicken pickin in a metal tune with distortion? Beautiful People?

"betcha Can't play this" columns; start there. he also has a dvd and tab book (its tabbed the exact way he plays it, unlike most tab books he wrote it himself) Other than that its just a matter of patience, there all hard as fuck to learn though

fairly simple - he was a fan + composer abilities + experienced guitar player.

he did some really good things in manson - the live solo in sweet dreams live version, still rather simple, but much more expressive than the original

and the solo in astonishing panorama of endtimes, pure john5 style !

A lot of treble and mids, I think. Guy loves his pinch harmonics. Sometimes I'll go overboard with them to, especially if I plan on playing a lot from the neck pickup. Kind of balances out it's lower response. He seems to be doing a lot of the same. When he alternates his picking, you get that characteristic thud of the neck pickup, but without the muddiness.

i always use the neck pickup and always have treble on full but i make up for it with mid on th low side a little and bass a bit high. i love it lol
