Love this tune...first heard and loved it on one of my dad's Irish folk/rebel song albums when I was a kid. Then when PP&M came out with their version, I fell in love with it again. Like your version best.
Thanks for tagging this as a response to my dulcimer version. I was delighted to see that several days ago, and now embarrassed to see that I didn't approve the response until just now. Sorry about that, no snub intended. Thanks again!
I learned this song as a child in fifth grade, we sang it for our spring concert that year. I have never forgotten it, and it still makes me come all over goosebumps when I hear it. thank you for posting it~
It's wonderful, your voice is very good. I see that that the intro is a little bit different from that of PPM. Could you mind sending me the guitar tab or sheet music of this song?
ps. I dont try to copy the original. Its been maybe 40 years since I heard it. I sang this to the kids and it evolved this way. Probably its the path of leat resistance to play. Thanks.
You have a very soothing voice perfect for this song. Your playing was wonderful! I love folk songs and you have done this one justice. Thank you for sharing.
the original words are gaelic. they belong to an irish folk song called shul aroon. if you've heard the song johnny has gone for a soldier it is also very similar.
way to kind. Its a good guitar that plays like a 6 string. Variants of travis pick but now the theories are in my fingers and not my brain.Basic chords with runs off the basic chords. Thanks so much. Does inspire me to continue. :-)
These songs arose from my childhood out of the interest of "oldstewball" et al.

Oh, it's Irish (i.e. Gaelic). I used to think they were singing about their shoes.

I was drawn so strongly to this song also ... The olde midieval sound ... and the non-sensical syrics drew me to it ...

I think you are about the best 12-string guitar picker that I've heard.
