The first 2 Hellraiser films are cold and dark with absolutely no humour in the slightest and I think that's part of the reason they have held up so well over the years.

Very true, Pinhead was originally written as another demon from hell, he however turned out to be very popular among horror fans. So from Hellraiser III: Hell on earth and forward its more or less his show. If memory serves Hellraiser part 10 or something was released earlier this year.

You know even though... The first movie, wasn't really the most pretty sight. I think it represents what the writer wanted for his book, I'm going to see if i can get my hands on this book. Since there is more of a background on the "Cenobite's."
