I took my ACT today, and the reading prompt we had was a biography on your musical career in Battlestar Galactica. I have to believe that's a good sign.

Quetion, do you find it necessary to learn how to read music to compose a musical piece? I have been playing piano and drums by ear as well as teaching my self how to play guitar and violin. I would love to compose a wonderful piece but it seems reading sheet music/writing music(just music theory in general) is an obstacle for me.
@AnnNg90 that's ok. Baltar hates himself. And all people with long hair and facial hair are the evil twins of their good selves in a parallel universe. So, yeah...

I've found that I tend to memorize music after I've rehearsed it enough. It's like I can picture the sheet music in my mind without looking at it, so I'm still sort of "reading" it. but, this piece really was a bitch to learn. Took me a solid month of playing an hour or two a day.
@bearmccreary and you remember it "phrase" by "phrase". If I mess up at some stage, I can't just stop and start again. Sometimes I have to go way back in the track to start reading it (in my head) again.
Talking about energy, reminds me that I can't for the life of me speak (or sing) and play at the same time. Takes too much energy as well! Never mind reading and turning the pages...
@bearmccreary wow... I just got the BSG scores (Santa has musical taste), learned the easiest ones (Roslin and Adama, Something Dark,...) and I was already thinking this piece would be a bitch to learn. But if *you*, the guy who actually wrote that, say it was indeed, I'm freaking out!
Still, it seems to me Violence and Variations is lot more hellish to play... am i mistaken?
i can imagine battlestar being done as a play and people in viper costumes dancing around and chasing people in cylon raider costumes while the piano player plays this.
This is amazing! You know what you have to play? "Kara Remembers" from the season 4 soundtrack! I mean it was even done on piano in the show and it's frakking EPIC.
The true genius, I think, lies in the fact that he manages to re-arrange a (for all practical purposes) fully orchestrated piece into a piano solo while retaining most of the original's epicness. Few composers can do that.
@Yeesha8679 Actually most orchestrated pieces start as a song on the Piano and are evolved to all the different instruments. It's part of planning it out.
@paulmcc11 Yes, but with a piece this complex it's still handy to have the sheet music in front of you for reference. He uses sheet music on some of his other songs, which means two things.
1. He is so comfortable with this piece that he can just feel his way through.
2. He is pretty much a divine being of musical genius.
@teufelkim I did! Both my dad and I, as a matter of fact. That scene made me in a way wish the Pegasus/Galactica standoff boiled over into an all-out war. It would have certainly been interesting to find out who woould win... Personally, I would vote in Adama's favor.
Hey Cylon man... Yes... you...Cylon Man. This song is amazing, the best of Battlestar Galactica. Definely...my favority song. I hope...and I don't know... but I hope to listening this song in Battlestar Galactica Blood and Chrome, or... The new production will need to create a Cylon to find a perfect song like this. Yes... Bear McCreary's Cylons music. So say we all.
Blimey! I really love the soundtrack to the show - its what makes it so epic and emotive compared to any other show. My fave composer of the moment. Ive tried playing this and its just too tough for me so kudos anyone who can play this.
Ill just happilly sit here and listen ever onward.
@ScoutZugZug well dude... he wrote the piece, so I'm sure he has a good grasp of it... plus he's a fucking GOD, so this is like talking to you and me :D
please do Black Market next Bear :D I'll be your best friend... hell can I be your best friend anyway :D
@tehoken Funny you'd mention Black Market. I've often wondered why I didn't arrange it for the piano book. Somehow it just slipped my mind. Maybe if I do a second volume? One of these days. I've got too much on my plate right now to think about it at the moment though.
@bearmccreary well whenever you do it, I'm sure it'll pwn :p I'm guessing it's just SO awesome as it is now, it was off somewhere in your head surfing a dinosaur when you where doing the piano book :p good luck with your current stuff.
@ScoutZugZug As a pianist, this isn't very impressive. The capabilities of your body's muscle memory is often vastly underestimated. You can easily memorize a dozen or more pages of music just by playing it once a day for a couple weeks. What's more incredible to me is his amazing technique.
Man, I gotta say. Thank god that Ron D Moore and co decided to go back on their initial decision to have a minimal score and really give you free reign. Your score is such a huge part of what made BSG perhaps the greatest television series ever created. The raw emotional impact that comes from the fusion of the incredible storytelling of the show and your brilliant score really is beyond words. I am so glad you got to share your music with us all :)
@Atowntrekkie Because you have to watch him play everything - the from the subtle melodies to the blaring taikos, all with his fingers on piano! It is, I dare say, breathtaking.
I remember hearing this on your website--the video for "Prelude..." was incredible with full orchestra. Didn't think that it could sound even more so on the ivories. Thanks for proving me wrong!
What a nice attack....thanks for the negative input...just thought the normal populous out there should know and not the almighty music genius....no need to treat me has an anti-christ now
This is one of the best pieces of music from a tv show or film, that i have ever heard. Great work Bear, its good to see great music is still being made.
BSG was great. Actually the first time I found a remake of a series to be better than the original... and part of that was because of the music that fitted so well. Well done Bear! Sad that the series ended after 4 years. I still listen to the BSG music a lot, I can remember all those scenes by just listening to your music.
play for me forever bear..... :3

SternMann93 4 months ago 7
@SternMann93 Yeap. I agree. Kara's Remember
amadesic 4 months ago
The true genius, I think, lies in the fact that he manages to re-arrange a (for all practical purposes) fully orchestrated piece into a piano solo while retaining most of the original's epicness. Few composers can do that.
Yeesha8679 4 months ago
@Yeesha8679 Actually most orchestrated pieces start as a song on the Piano and are evolved to all the different instruments. It's part of planning it out.
MaskedDominon 4 months ago
@paulmcc11 Yes, but with a piece this complex it's still handy to have the sheet music in front of you for reference. He uses sheet music on some of his other songs, which means two things.
1. He is so comfortable with this piece that he can just feel his way through.
2. He is pretty much a divine being of musical genius.

when watching that scene wherein Adama tells Cain, "I'm getting my men," I said 'hell yeah!' out loud. Anybody else do the same?
teufelkim 4 months ago 3
@teufelkim I did! Both my dad and I, as a matter of fact. That scene made me in a way wish the Pegasus/Galactica standoff boiled over into an all-out war. It would have certainly been interesting to find out who woould win... Personally, I would vote in Adama's favor.

He isn't using sheet music. He has this all memorized. O.o

please do Black Market next Bear :D I'll be your best friend... hell can I be your best friend anyway :D
tehoken 4 months ago in playlist tehoken's favourites
@tehoken Funny you'd mention Black Market. I've often wondered why I didn't arrange it for the piano book. Somehow it just slipped my mind. Maybe if I do a second volume? One of these days. I've got too much on my plate right now to think about it at the moment though.
bearmccreary 3 months ago
@bearmccreary well whenever you do it, I'm sure it'll pwn :p I'm guessing it's just SO awesome as it is now, it was off somewhere in your head surfing a dinosaur when you where doing the piano book :p good luck with your current stuff.
tehoken 3 months ago
@bearmccreary Yeah, that was a good piece, and scene, where the kid pulled the trigger.
Apolla became a good char in second incarnation of Galactica. But, I love everyting you did for the commander, cause I'm a fan of him.
efetherman 3 months ago
@ScoutZugZug As a pianist, this isn't very impressive. The capabilities of your body's muscle memory is often vastly underestimated. You can easily memorize a dozen or more pages of music just by playing it once a day for a couple weeks. What's more incredible to me is his amazing technique.
syntheticXstasy 3 months ago
man i wish i could play like that, but all i can do is favorite this video in appreciation of Bear McCreary.

One of my favorite songs from the series performed brilliantly by one of my favorite composers. Amazing stuff :)
VinceHolz 5 months ago
Man, I gotta say. Thank god that Ron D Moore and co decided to go back on their initial decision to have a minimal score and really give you free reign. Your score is such a huge part of what made BSG perhaps the greatest television series ever created. The raw emotional impact that comes from the fusion of the incredible storytelling of the show and your brilliant score really is beyond words. I am so glad you got to share your music with us all :)

I really like this arrangement. It's an amazing song already, but on piano, it's just epic!
Atowntrekkie 5 months ago
@Atowntrekkie Because you have to watch him play everything - the from the subtle melodies to the blaring taikos, all with his fingers on piano! It is, I dare say, breathtaking.

I thougth it was unplayabele in piano - too fast. Now i see i was just wrong.
Petrust1991 5 months ago
Effortless perfection. He's beyond just playing the piano masterfully, he's emotionally connected to the keys.

I remember hearing this on your website--the video for "Prelude..." was incredible with full orchestra. Didn't think that it could sound even more so on the ivories. Thanks for proving me wrong!

It is amazing the speed and coordination showed here. But then again I remember he is a god of the piano XD

BSG was great. Actually the first time I found a remake of a series to be better than the original... and part of that was because of the music that fitted so well. Well done Bear! Sad that the series ended after 4 years. I still listen to the BSG music a lot, I can remember all those scenes by just listening to your music.
