I actually think MGS4 is the most overrated modern game, plus its overall rating is actually below mass effect 2, uncharted 2 is a rival to Mass effect 2 but clearly mass effect 2 did a special interactive experience to make it NO.1
When you see something like this, you'd always expect hate comments, because not everyone enjoys a sci-fi RPG rather than the usual "more shooting and killing, less bullshit cutscenes that no one enjoys" thing. Try a new game, or stick with the same video game that'll rot your mind.

Bullshit like Call of Duty or Halo (not sure about Halo, actually, because they at least care about more than sales in their games) are just rehashes of the first game in the series. They're boring, generic, over the top action games that have no innovation whatsoever. Mass Effect 2's appeal is in it's attention to detail, wonderful character development and story, and fun gameplay. It's number 1 because it deserves it.

@LeonidasMGO Not bitching then, I didn't think I was either so agree to disagree. Well it's not just IGN, quite a few big names gave it GOTY's. And tons of fans, so don't say they got paid to make it #1. I do agree though that those two games are contenders, and it's an absolute outrage MGS4 didn't make it on the list. I can sort of understand IGN only having only one entry per series, but Peace Walker isn't near as good, and still only got 37. For me, those 3 are the best modern games.

@LeonidasMGO MGS4 did get a 10. But they don't take the numbers into account on these lists. The scores on the games are only for the person who reviewed that game. For instance, Borderlands scored an 8.8, lower than a lot of games on that list, but still got #35. Those scores are individual, so that's not part of the list. Obviously they get paid for reviews, but that doesn't determine score. Black Ops only got an 8.5, and it's one of the most successful games of all time.

@LeonidasMGO Watch some independent reviews on ME2 then. Like Youtube channels or whatnot. It's pretty well adored, not just by big name critics. They don't do that, actually. Bungie wouldn't give millions of dollars to every game critic just for good reviews. That's not feasible, I'm sure critics are more likely to highly review big name games but if a game sucks it will be reviewed as such. The only thing I agree is that MGS4 got screwed. It wouldn't be my #1, but it would crack top 5.
Mass Effect 2 was awesome, but i still dont understand, how is it that MGS4, a game that sold 5 million copies on the PS3 only, had a masterpiece of gameplay aswell as storyline, graphics that make you drop youre jaw to the floor. fun as hell online, a perfect send off to Solid Snake. and getting a perfect 10 at IGN(which you barely see). i still dont get how it didnt get to the list. =(

@Gambit7Beyond I didn't understand that either. I absolutely adore Mass Effect 2, it's by far my number 1, but MGS4 is easily 2 or 3. I think it's because they already had a MGS series entry (Peace Walker? Can't remember at the moment) and it seems that they only did one entry for each series. I think MGS4 is better than Peace Walker, it at least deserved the MGS entry.

If spongebob was the best game i've ever played, then it would be sad. ME2 is an incredible game that deserves all the praise it gets. Being a veteran gamer since '98 (age 6), i've played a lot of games. Including the top ten on this list and MGS4. Still, the experience I got from ME2 after playing the first was unforgettable. Totally agree. Mass effect 2 is my favourite game till mass effect 3 comes but till then its my fav game. I know ppl complain gameplay is not up to par. The reason i freakin love mass effect is not the because of only the storyline but the whole universe of mass effect. I have never played a game with so much depth in the universe. I have become a space fan because of it.

My god..... how can anyone think Mass Effect 2 was an amazing game is beyond me. The Story of that game is incredibly stupid and predictable. I mean, if anyone had EVER read a book before playing this game.... then you basically knew what was gonna happen an hour at least before it actually did! This game is just an incredibly EASY shooter with some predictable dialogue. I never had fun during this game, and I dont see how anyone else could either. I STRONGLY disagree IGN
To be quite honest, no matter what the "Top Modern Game" is, people will ALWAYS be upset. Everyone has different tastes and opinions. You shouldn't be upset because it really doesn't matter. Have fun playing the games YOU enjoy, and don't worry about what some other people think. After all, it is ultimately your choice and your choice alone as to what is your favorite game.
mass effect 2 really did not deserve to be number 1. The story was epic and really draws you in, but it had its share of flaws such as the third person shooting. You cannot roll for evading, the blindfire is weird and the cover system was unrealistic. They could shoot you from the side and still not get hit. The story-telling was the only good thing about the game. However, the gameplay, ehhh, not so much. These are just my opinions
@00loneX yeah there's some sort of blindfire. When you don't press the aim while taking cover and press fire, Shepard will take his whole body out of cover and shoot. Since I'm used to the controls of Uncharted 2, the blindfire is typically just pressing fire instead of using aim. See and try out for yourself. Yeah basically, it wouldn't be called blindfire.
@filopride619 I think they kept that out so it wouldn't seem too similar to Gears of War. Anyways, I have never encountered a situation where aiming was a hassle. I believe you have to make every bullet count.

Because when I heard the game's an RPG, then I wouldn't mind the shooting mechanics.Then I picked the game up, and it feels more like Star Wars, just more casual, like more of an action game. @floppykid those games are written better, have better acting (motion capture was used so everything you see in the game is exactly what the voice actor playing them does in a studio), and are better directed and composed then most garbage in the theaters today. the textures and graphics are higher quality than any pixar movie you could think of. these and a bunch of other games surpass a lot of movies today. and btw you can't define what art is. no one can. if i wanted, i could call games art.

I actually think MGS4 is the most overrated modern game, plus its overall rating is actually below mass effect 2, uncharted 2 is a rival to Mass effect 2 but clearly mass effect 2 did a special interactive experience to make it NO.1

They're boring, generic, over the top action games that have no innovation whatsoever. Mass Effect 2's appeal is in it's attention to detail, wonderful character development and story, and fun gameplay. It's number 1 because it deserves it.

And tons of fans, so don't say they got paid to make it #1. I do agree though that those two games are contenders, and it's an absolute outrage MGS4 didn't make it on the list. I can sort of understand IGN only having only one entry per series, but Peace Walker isn't near as good, and still only got 37. For me, those 3 are the best modern games.

The top 100 games are bullshit i just looked at the review and it got a 9.7.So they even game Mario Galaxy a 10/10.Also as IGN is a horrible company didn't give a score for Metal Gear Sold4 it most likely got a 10/10.So this list is all complete bull shit.

@LeonidasMGO MGS4 did get a 10. But they don't take the numbers into account on these lists. The scores on the games are only for the person who reviewed that game. For instance, Borderlands scored an 8.8, lower than a lot of games on that list, but still got #35. Those scores are individual, so that's not part of the list. Obviously they get paid for reviews, but that doesn't determine score. Black Ops only got an 8.5, and it's one of the most successful games of all time.

@LeonidasMGO Watch some independent reviews on ME2 then. Like Youtube channels or whatnot. It's pretty well adored, not just by big name critics. They don't do that, actually. Bungie wouldn't give millions of dollars to every game critic just for good reviews. That's not feasible, I'm sure critics are more likely to highly review big name games but if a game sucks it will be reviewed as such. The only thing I agree is that MGS4 got screwed. It wouldn't be my #1, but it would crack top 5.

Mass Effect 2 was awesome, but i still dont understand, how is it that MGS4, a game that sold 5 million copies on the PS3 only, had a masterpiece of gameplay aswell as storyline, graphics that make you drop youre jaw to the floor. fun as hell online, a perfect send off to Solid Snake. and getting a perfect 10 at IGN(which you barely see). i still dont get how it didnt get to the list. =(
its sad cus MGS4 is my top game of this console generation.... for me, its my Ocarina of Time. i love it.

I think it's because they already had a MGS series entry (Peace Walker? Can't remember at the moment) and it seems that they only did one entry for each series. The reason i freakin love mass effect is not the because of only the storyline but the whole universe of mass effect. I have never played a game with so much depth in the universe. mass effect 2 really did not deserve to be number 1. The story was epic and really draws you in, but it had its share of flaws such as the third person shooting. You cannot roll for evading, the blindfire is weird and the cover system was unrealistic. They could shoot you from the side and still not get hit. The story-telling was the only good thing about the game. However, the gameplay, ehhh, not so much. These are just my opinions

@00loneX yeah there's some sort of blindfire. When you don't press the aim while taking cover and press fire, Shepard will take his whole body out of cover and shoot. Since I'm used to the controls of Uncharted 2, the blindfire is typically just pressing fire instead of using aim. See and try out for yourself. Yeah basically, it wouldn't be called blindfire.

Because when I heard the game's an RPG, then I wouldn't mind the shooting mechanics.Then I picked the game up, and it feels more like Star Wars, just more casual, like more of an action game. It was great!
But not exactly the best modern game ever. The characters were the best thing about it, and it gave you a lot of them which was pleasant. Still, I myself would give the title to Bioshock, assuming they're talking about the Ps360wii generation. The problem is that everyone has their own bias and nobody's played all the games modern day has to offer! Still, I respect people opinions for this game and i'm glad it wasn't COD.

@floppykid those games are written better, have better acting (motion capture was used so everything you see in the game is exactly what the voice actor playing them does in a studio), and are better directed and composed then most garbage in the theaters today. the textures and graphics are higher quality than any pixar movie you could think of. these and a bunch of other games surpass a lot of movies today. and btw you can't define what art is. no one can. if i wanted, i could call games art.
