Solid video! I've always wanted to attend a clinic. I'm into quite a bit of progressive metal/jazz, truly everything and this is a great demonstration of a rather interesting pattern (especially in it's conceptual form and it's theory value.) Have you ever heard anything from Thomas Haake? He has some pretty great patterns as well.
Haha awesome! noticed you didn't do the part later where I believe the foot pattern changes, and virgil follows the keyboards on the snare, i'd love to see you break that down!
Absolutely! I'm sure I'll get to it one day. have you heard the newest version on "Quantum Factor?" It's simply amazing; Virgil goes above and beyond even compared to the original '99 release.
I just have to say that this is not exactly how Virgil play this song. I've got a tab (that he made) somewhere on paper. You mainly use your right foot, but the pattern is played like RLRLR... etc.. And after each section of bars, when the riff starts over again, it's reversed to LRLR etc.
Thanks Frank. Yes, I'm aware of this; what your referring to is simply the alternating ostinato pattern. I wasn't so much concerned with the exact footing as I was helping them understand the rhythm itself and it's polyrhythmical value. Good eye my friend!
...and in fact, I'm cheating a bit in that I'm using diddles on the right foot and slipping in a single from the left foot on every 10th note (of the 11 note pattern).
Originally, Virgil executes a perpetually alternating footing!
Finally someone who plays it slowly, now I was able to transcribe the rhythm.
Started practising.

Yes, I guess one may have to be insane to progress as far as he has.

Hey there,
Nice video, sounds good.
I just have to say that this is not exactly how Virgil play this song. I've got a tab (that he made) somewhere on paper. You mainly use your right foot, but the pattern is played like RLRLR... etc.. And after each section of bars, when the riff starts over again, it's reversed to LRLR etc.
Just wanted to let you know.
Keep up the great work!
Cheers,

I know very little about drums, but what you're doing with your feet is amazing.
