  • Such an interesting substance.

  • Mercury is the only element people debate about. Mercury is toxic, and is a neurotoxin. However, elemental mercury poses little hazard in small amounts because it is not absorbed through the skin, and can pass through your body quickly if eaten (i dont recomend this!). Mercury vapors are a problem, but only in large amounts. Mercury is highly toxic in the form of soluble salts, like mercury nitrate or chloride. Insoluble salts are hazardous as well.

  • Does anyone really need that much mercury? :U

  • Anyone older than 50 knows that Hg metal is not toxic and probably played with it in their high school physics lab. We used to roll it around on the floor and coat silver coins with it. Forms beautiful, glistening amalgam layer. Also, we all had mercury fillings and seemed to survive. People have even drunk the stuff with no ill affects. On the other hand, all organomercury compounds, are very toxic. Unfortunately, the current generation doesn't know the difference between these and Hg.

  • @OldSundevil1

I will tell you why, because the media scares the people with lies about it, for example they say that Mercury metal can be absorbed by the skin and that is a lie, only mercury compounds like Mercuric (II) Chloride can, they make these lies about mercury metal in order to get people to give away their old Mercury devices to the government, so that the government can use it to extract gold much easier and cheaper.

  • i'll recomend you to put a magnet in your mouth

  • Whatever bollocks is responsible for this should do us all a favour and drink a pint of it.

  • ITS THE T1000 FUCKING RUN!!!!

  • Mercury is barely dangerous at all. Lewis and Clark took laxatives with them that were 80% mercury, it passed through them so quickly it never hurt them.

  • Glad to see you are wearing a scientific anti-mercury breathing apparatus

  • I wonder how would mercury behave with induced eddy currents...

  • @yo6ial have a look at some of those videos there great

  • hey its North America! 00:37 :)

  • Mercury is a non-competitive inhibitor; it attaches itself to enzymes in the digestive system and causes them to lose their shape and stop functioning properly. This means you can't digest food nearly as fast as you normally could and you basically starve to death as you're not taking in any energy.

  • Now pour water into it :D

  • You know what this reminds me of ....Terminator

  • Gallium is much better alternative if you're gunna play with it all day .

  • where can I buy mercury?

  • incredible

  • does this react with magnets?

  • shit looks like it's a living thing.

  • God imagine drinking that shit... It may pass through you but it will do so with a vengeance... Imagine shitting mercury... I guess T-1000 could put all that into perspective for you, lol.

  • Uh, just dont take that onto an airplane

  • Remember those Capri Sun Commercials from the 90s FTW

  • @chillmetal haha yeah!

  • I am no expert on the toxicity of mercury, but I would wear gloves no matter what.

  • you could explain it s lethal

  • let your kids play with it

  • I love the way people are jackasses when it comes to mercury.

  • @maxflack: that's just a good example of short-sightedness - get used to it...

  • @maxflack well this is most likely elemental mercury which is almost as safe as gallium

  • i have a question when i was a kid i broke a mercury themoter and it was on me but i clean it off and i live any explanation

  • haha, looks like fun. ur gunna die.

  • how are you gonna put that back into the bottle???

  • @cds417 Really? How would you put water back in a bottle?

  • @jspade1019 lol jk i wasnt thinking and mercury is poisonous water isnt so think of tht

  • where do u get it!!!!!!i want it sooooooo bad!!

  • I want to take a bath in mercury! xD

  • @TheLilla100 Darwinism at work

  • @TheLilla100 you'd be safe, aparently elemental mercury cant be absorbed by you're skin

  • @gunut4 And she's probably going to believe that.

Any way. You made me lol. Thanks :D xD

  • no, elemental mercury is not harmless. I'm not saying experiments like this will necessarily harm you, but its not something that should be done outside of a lab.

even dental assistants nowadays that minimize their contact with mercury , have impaired cognitive skills compared to the control group. its probably something that would have gone unnoticed if they weren't put through tests, but its something to consider, before deciding to do something like this in your house.

  • how the mercury is made????? and can you just buy or do i have to have a special license??????

  • @axenone Mercury is not made, it's an element... You can buy it from lots of chemical suppliers no license required....

  • @axenone you should really do alot of research before even contemplating buying it. its very toxic, and should only be handled by proffesionals in a controled enviorment.

  • @peter17dude wooow when i was a kid i broke a thermometer an i play with it an i almost swallow it, i was so stupid for playing with that lolololol any way i gone get a couple of it an play lololl

  • @axenone playing with it is not necessarily dangerous. its a bad idea, but many of previous generations have done it. i would not worry about it mate, but if it was spilled indoors i would make sure its cleaned up very properly, and you can also buy a mercury badge to monitor the air concentration.

if you don't life in the house anymore i think you inform whoever lives there now, as they have a right to know.

all the best to you sir.

  • @axenone mercury is an element of it's own like carbon, oxygen or iron.

However, it is difficult to find alone in nature and is therefore extracted from it's main ores, Cinnabar or vermilion. (Pokemon much?)

as far as i know, you don't need a license

  • I wanna drink it.

  • @10Slayer01 no u dont

  • 0:43 nice camera

  • i love it

  • 2,501Kg? I've 13Kg (1L)

  • @vitorix24

    You lucky bastard. >:(

  • @HereIsJesus Would would you do-o-o-o-o, for 5 lbs of mercury?

  • see if it wasnt toxic we wouldnt need tv or internet i could play with that all day

  • mercury is so fun, cool, and bad for you!

    and its easy cleanup!

  • @meesterpotato1

I don't know if you were being sarcastic, but a mercury spill is one of the WORST kind of chemicals to spill. 10g of mercury is more of a problem than 1L of HCl acid.

It is almost impossible to be completely clean up

  • @mewrox99

Wrong, freeze it with some lN2, or just pour sulfur powder on it.

  • '

i have one mercury switch in my vehicle hood for light off / on,,,

open hood is on the light,,,

closed hood is off the light

  • isnt mercury like a mirror?

  • Terminator 2.

  • its harmful lol ppl have died make sure u take precautions btw nice vid

  • I'd like to have some of that, if only I weren't so clumsy.

  • its like a liquid mirror hehehe

  • POUR IT IN SOMEONES MILKSHAKE!

  • Mercury gives off toxic gas at room temperature, wear a mask next time please.

  • ...that's so weird...

  • That looks delicious.

  • i see youuuuuuuuuuuuuu!

  • How are you not dead?

  • @caseydrake69

Hg isn't actually all that harmful.

  • you can buy mercury at w w w(dot)plantsandstuff.ecrater(dot)com/ I did, its fun stuff!

  • they used mercury to make hats about a 100yrs ago hence the name mad as a hatter becos they breathed the fumes of the mercury

  • @tonictisor

everyone knows that its the oldest fucking story in the history of stories

  • just reminds me of terminator 2

  • you no wut happens if ya play whit mercury when its not in a sealed container it evaporates very slowly and if ya breath that in it gets in your blood stream and you die

  • Yes and no, elemental mercury is fairly safe and you can handle it for a while, just make certain to wash your hands very well after handling it so you don't run the risk of getting any into your mouth. Also elemental Mercury isn't absorbed through your skin, however the type the place in thermometers can, hence why it's so dangerous.

  • Mercury isn't something you can play with.

  • ok, your white with short spiky hair and a silver phone judjing by this video

  • what happen if we touch it?

  • @blablaablabla

    nothing

  • that's a lie!

some of it absorbs into your skin and you're fucked if you get it in a cut.

Mercury is one of the most toxic things you can fuck with

  • @HaunterV

Than why am i fine? I hsve used it to recover gold plenty of times.

Most toxic my ass. Its about as toxic as lead. HCN is far more toxic IMO.

  • i suppose you clean grease off your hands with gasoline too?

  • @HaunterV

I suppose your some asswipe too?

  • i try

  • Mercury is toxic, but it is not absorbed through cuts and will not kill you if you are exposed once to the elemental form. Even if you drink it, most of it will pass through your body without being absorbed. The body does not readily absorb metals, but in an organic form such as dimethyl mercury, one drop on the skin will kill you because the body takes it in. It causes nervous degeneration as a long-term effect, but the pure metal will not kill you if you play with it once. I have held it.

  • @ExplosiveScience yea mercury isnt dangerous unless you breath it when it evaporates then you have to go to hospital and if you breathe enough you will die

  • @ExplosiveScience

Well it's been 9 months since your comment so... Let's give it another 10 years and see how you're doing. You should let them release a public autopsy so we'll know for sure. You won't. But we will.

  • @ExplosiveScience I've give you $50 to put a video up showing you drinking mercury to support your claims it'll pass through your body without being absorbed...

  • @stromboldt what a stupid thing to say..... he said it MOST LIKELY passes through your body without being absorbed. just because i would most likely survive if i ate dog shit doesn't mean i would do it....

  • @ExplosiveScience insteed playing with mercury you can make silver slime by mixing white glue, tide and silver color

you can make it by mixing borax with glue too and adding silver color in tide or borax

    but remember borax is corosive

  • @ExplosiveScience If you say so then how are you living? You say you have held it? Either you mean bare or with gloves.

  • @EbilGrunt360 Like I said to ExplosiveScience: I used to break thermometers and play with mercury (Which I do NOT recommend) all the time when I was a kid. I also used to melt down lead and shape it into stuff like lead knuckles. If it would have been so toxic I wouldn't be here without any health issues typing this message after 25 years.

P.S. I have NEVER been hospitalized for anything, I have no allergies, no health issues, nothing at all. I am a 100% healthy adult.

  • @ExplosiveScience What do u mean? PLay with it once? i cant play with it more than twice

  • @ExplosiveScience

even so we have to evacuate an entire lab if someone drops a mercury thermometer XD

  • @qwerty5000 Of course. The elemental form can be handled for a short period of time without any effects, however; the vapors it releases are very poisonous and can fill up a room.

  • @qwerty5000 My brother-in-law, who is a fireman, teaches a HAZMAT course to new firemen. I'm a PhD chemist and have played with lots of Hg metal during my life. I once asked him why HAZMAT teams and the press always show up & make such a big deal over every little, piddly Hg metal spill, even though we both new that the metal was not a hazard. People are unduly alarmed and lots of money is wasted. He said he knew it was stupid but "The ignorant press and public now DEMAND they respond"

  • @OldSundevil1 That's ok, you tell us it's a waste when the next mercury spill pollutes the groundwater near your water supply! :D

  • @bigglessy I certainly will! Hg metal is insoluble in water, stupid. Thus, it can't pollute a water supply. Hg contamination of water, are most likely inorganic Hg salts--most of which are not toxic and come from natural sources. Conversion of Hg metal to the toxic organomercury compounds (eg., methylmercury) requires conversion of inorganic Hg salts into these organo compounds. I know. I made these compounds in the lab for my Ph. D. thesis. FYI, check out Minamata disease in Wikipedia.

  • @OldSundevil1 The soil in many places contains lots of leftover chemicals left over from farming and other tasks, goodness knows what's left over in some places. Are you saying to me that it's entirely impossible for mercury to "accidentally" react with some pesticides and other chemicals before entering the water supply? Would you be willing to take that risk?

  • @bigglessy Very unlikely. Elemental Hg is not very reactive. Would have to be converted to inorganic Hg+ or Hg++ first in order to react with the pesticides. That would require centuries under normal natural conditions (if at all). The pesticides would have decomposed long before that. Unreacted Hg metal has been observed, co-mingled with cinnabar deposits in Hg mines in Spain, for instance. Imagine how long it had existed, as an unreacted metal, before discovery.

  • @ExplosiveScience True, but if someone were to inhale it, most of it is absorbed. Just cause a low amount is absorbed by touching it, doesn't make it safe.

  • @ExplosiveScience Why is Mercury so deadly? There's little of it in the ocean and animals live in the ocean.

  • @ExplosiveScience I agree, I used to break thermometers and play with mercury (Which I do NOT recommend) all the time when I was a kid. I also used to melt down lead and shape it into stuff like lead knuckles. If it would have been so toxic I wouldn't be here without any health issues typing this message after 25 years.

It's like what they say about Marijuana. It's supposed to somehow make you slow and stupid but yet millions of highly intelligent and productive people smoke it everyday.

  • @from212 The only side effect is that you repeat yourself.

  • @ExplosiveScience true.. but you never know dude

  • instant death

  • nothing, the surface tension of mercury is way bigger than water's. But, if mercury get in the blood, that could be deadly

  • @itsaidhi

because the mercury forms compounds in the water.

  • hope you dont use thispan for cooking

  • @BovrilKetchup well its toxic but its very easy to clean because of its surface tension

  • where did you get so much of mercury? I dont think it is free sold on the market.

  • @Erniz2

Sure it is. 7lb goes for about $80

  • I would appreciate for any reference or link where to buy it .

  • put up a wanted ad on craigslist, ebay, chemistry forums, everywhere. thats what i did and i got a couple responses after a month.

  • they used liquid mercury on a hot plate for the regenerating effect in terminator 2. (you know, after the liquid nitrogen)

  • mercury doesn't cause fatal effects but it does make you go insane from prolonged exposure

  • Hence the term "Mad Hatter." Hatters would rub beaver pelts (at least I think it was beaver) with mercury as a way to treat them before turning them into hats.

  • this is about 68ML of mercury.

  • It seems so strange to say five pounds of a liquid, but seeing as it's also metal, it makes sense.

  • i held about 5 lb of mercury ^^ could play with that stuff for days q: we almost got up fighting for just to sit and play with gravity and mercury :D fills NOTHING but weighs so much .. awesome and its kinda liquid gold..

  • Think of all the vaccines they could make with this.

  • That looks like dark eco from Jak and Daxter.

  • are you sure that isn't gallium?

  • i think it is, because mercury is extremely toxic, and mercury has a more silver color.

  • no elemental murcury is not toxic mercury solutions or "watered down" mercury is.

  • that doesnt make sense. Why would watered down mercury be toxic, and not mercury is pure form.

  • go watch bionerd 23's videos experiments with the liquid metal then ull understand

  • maybe because the watered down mercury's properties change and allow it to seep into the skin more easily.

  • lol- galium is solida at 30ºC so, only contact with body.... ahaha LIQUIDE!!!!!!!!! :D

its mercury because is very very briliant...

  • Mercury is so cool, it looks like animation

  • has the pan already got water in?

  • Whenever I see a pool of mercury I think of the scene when the T-1000 is thawing out after being frozen and shattered

  • actually they did use mercury for that effect

  • its a T-1000 ruuuun!!

  • That better not be a metal pan!

    There's a risk of amalgamation

  • that little puddle weights 5lbs? o.o

  • lol mercury is very dense

  • its possible. mercury is very dense

  • .. very dense .. o.o indeed lol

  • Mercury weighs alot lol. 1 liter of mercury weighs 13.595 kilograms which is about 27 pounds. Though don't quote me on my conversion to pounds lol.

  • lol it looks like the bad guy in terminator 2 hahaha

  • like its in space lol

  • They actually froze mercury in the film and let it melt + pool lol

  • hahaha nice i did not know that thank u for the info :]

  • I got 1/2500 of that ammount for my element collection lol..

  • that's 5 lbs?! that's like 3 oz in water!

    and isnt mercury a liquid?

  • actually its a solid and a liquid when it comes together its a liquid when it seperates its a solid.

  • It is always a liquid at room temperature. if you freeze it enough, it becomes a solid. if you heat it enough, it boils and. Just like any other metal. Mercury seems so different mainly because of its extremely high density and low melting point.

  • It is a liquid. Are we watching the same video?

  • what will happen if you put it in the oven?

  • i tink it whould expande

  • 51b... wow now that is retarded. thats 5lb as in five pounds.

  • what hapens if you use a magnet or something like that eh?

  • nothing, mercury is a non ferrous metal.

  • whats the 51b stand for?

  • awesome science rules

  • Nice video, but some of the comments make me wonder why people search these videos in the first place. It's almost as if people type/search "mercury," see a result like this one (or the bionerd vid) and want to be extra shocked when they see someone "playing" with Hg in the video. I don't mind looking for "extra shock" in videos/movies, I'm all for it, but some people need to separate the need for shock from the need to reply with false "hysterical" comments like "Hg kills u ZOMG!" and the like.

  • It tastes like chicken ;o)

  • My friend is about 60 years and i remember him telling me he used to play with mercury XD Lol they say back then kids wud break the thermomiters to play with mercury :3

  • Holy crap, you must have spent your life savings. In my experience it is very expensive.

  • You do know that the Mercury will probably start to amalgamate with that tray, don't you?

  • not this one

  • i really want like a bottle of mercury... were do u get it from???

  • try UnitedNuclear

  • Lol mercury is SUPER toxic, it causes brain toxicity too. Plus a super small amount can decimate even a large body of water. Not fun stuff. Although most of the baby boomers handled the stuff in highschool chemistry

  • Im not eatin a caserole out of that pan now...XD

  • I think author is dead by now, breathink above the mercury is suicidal. Atliest he isnt gonna have baby.

  • no itts safe its only a hazard when in the blood stream...

  • the mercury evaporates in the room temperature slowly. And the author was not wearing gassmask (for sure). He was breathing mercury wapor in to his lugs. And the lugs are direct way into blood stream..Dude I know what Iam talking , there were few cases in my town of mercury spill. Special unit evacuated all the block. Amount of spill was slightly bigger. Kinds ,please , dont play with that stuff or you will day in 5-10 y.

  • yes but he inhailed sooo little of it it was of no danger now if you are in a poorly ventalated room all day with large amounts of mercury than yes
