Cats 101: Russian Blue

Once you face a russian blue, it's impossible not to fall in love with them.

Though my tomcat is not steelgrey... it's more like anthracite with the typical silvery shine. And it's true that they're very intelligent (opening doors and so on..) =)

My cat Nimbus seems to be a Russian Blue... But she came from a very mixed litter, a sort of all-types litter. Her brother Zaboo is a thin, dainty black and white cat with golden eyes. Still, Nimbus retains all the characteristics, physical as well as mental. How is this possible? Jus asking.

I got a Russian blue, its smart, knows how to open doors, and are only attracted to the owners, me and my family, the other cats we have got will get a growl if they get to close to it, also if it meets strangers it flees, and its so beautiful, light gray with very green eyes, <3

It has the same features as the RussianBlue except its eyes are Orange instead.

My Russian blue Duckie is my sweet baby girl, I love her to pieces. I rescued her when I witnessed someone tossing her out their car window in the dead of night right into a briar bush. She was in a burlap bag, just a tiny one month old baby Blue Russian with more of a quack than a meow (Thats how she got her name).

I extracted her from the bush, cleaned the prickers from her, took her home and she has been my best friend for over seven years now; I would die if I ever lost her.

I really want to own (or should I say, be owned by) a Russian Blue cat. But I was broken-hearted to learn from this Cats 101 show that Russian Blue do not adapt well to a changing home environment. We move to different houses every 2 years because we are still renting apartments. It will take many years before I can adopt or purchase a Russian Blue cat because I need to get an own house first, so that my cat can thrive on a consistent home environment.

My best friend (non human) is a russian blue. He's never cautious of strangers. Loves to be the center of attention and is my neighbors cat who always hops the fence to look for me. He's the most unique cat I've ever met. He tries to pull me back when i leave out my yard and runs in front of me. He sits on my shoulder like a pikachu and usually sleeps on his back.

this is almost all correct. but my russian blue adapts very well to new homes takes him about a week and hes good.. also ive noticed hes not the only one with a white patch on the neck !!! and are there black versions of these cats? cause my cat had a sister that looked like him but a bit thinner , all black but had the one white patch.

I really love cats but the one thing I cant stand is the amount of shedding. My sister has two siamese cats and and the amount of hair that is on my jeans from a day chilling there is ridicioulus. I'm not judging or anything but I just dont want cat hair all over my flat.

But I love this cat breed so much and I heard that with shorthaired cats its not that bad at all, so people who own this cat, how often do they shed and is getting rid of cat hair hard?

Can anyone let me know?

@TheVilllageIdiot - Go with the Russian. I have had one for over two years and the shedding is minimal. She doesn't require a lot of brushing either. I've had life-long sinus issues as well and they haven't worsened at all with my cat around. Most other cats affect me badly.

They weren't kidding when they said Russian Blues will grow very attached to you. I have two. They hide around anybody but my girlfriend and myself, but around us they're like our best friends. They're great lap cats, and they like to snuggle and be close to me. Great breed for those who want a very affectionate "buddy" sort of cat that will follow them around and snuggle.

Lily (my Russian Blue) is NOT lean. She is ULTRA FAT. ; ) But Lily doesn't have green eyes... I don't think shes a pure-bred, though.

As far as I know there are several recognized kinds of russian blue cats. The American and European types have come to differ somewhat; traditional Euro-type Russian Blues tend to be larger and more heavily built than American Russian Blues.

My first russian blue cat was American, the second one is European. So I experienced the diff. myself. I am sure your Lily is pure bred.

I've got 3 of them. All of them were rescued. Not sure if they're purebreeds cause they all have yellow-green eyes. But they otherwise fit the description. Our oldest always comes up to me and makes me pet her but when a friend comes over she'll hiss at them. They all have the softest fur.
