This is such a wonderful musical. It gives the complexity and depth that a lot of audiences are looking for. I truely died over it right after hearing it's music for the first time. I think that this is the best musical piece that andrew lloyd webber has composed (based off of the original book).
This was a detour for ALW at the time but I enjoyed it a lot and play the soundtrack loads. It has one major drawback. ...... None of the characters is in any way likable. They are all so self centred and you really do need to engage and care about at least one character in a show. I think The Woman in White is the next step on from this in terms of using repetitive melodies instead of standout songs and I liked that one a lot too.
Sure the musical was a bust, but I am curious about the whole story. I would like to see the whole musical. How unfortunate, there is no recrding of the musical, only the voice recordings of the original casts.
No, nothing to do with Sondheim ALW. Some of the music and orchestrations are lovely, but that doesnt make a good piece of musical theatre. I actually think its a very lazy piece of writing, not brave. None of the characters have their own voice/depth of characterisation, they all just steal bits of each others themes. For a 100% sung through show of sophistication look at "Falsettos". Truly complex characters and relationships.
this is lloyd webbers best music. its a chamber musical. if u like wicked and rent etc then this is not for you. But this score will be the one by lloyd webber that will last.
Ok as in nice to listen to, but it isn't a good musical.Greatly lacking in drama and incredibly slow; when characters sing about ordering coffee and brandys or eating omletes, its all a bit trivial.
Infact i would go as far as to say its an anti-musical.
Also for a fully sung through show (two and a half hours of music) there are actually fewer "tunes" than say your typical "book" musical, just a great deal of represe. Count them.
But then life would be boring if we all liked the same thing.
Is this going to end up a sondheim/lloyd webber argument? I agree that there is not a lot of stand alone songs, but the reprisals and being through composed means there doesnt have to be. And you have to admit, the songs are beautifully orchestrated and have wonderful melodies. It may not be Phantom or Cats in terms of success but it was a brave and bld move by ALW to compose a more mature score. I also like Sondheim btw:-) My favs are Sunday with George, Into the woods and Sweeney.
I agree. The first time i listened to this was just for Michael Ball, and i think it's an amazing piece of work. I've never seen it done onstage, but it's easily become a favorite ALW of mine.
And YAY both for Sondheim and ALW (though Sondheim doesn't have anything to do with this show). I always have a list of favorite: for ALW, it's this and Phantom, and with Sondheim, it's Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods
I've actually listened to Company, my friend made me a copy. I wasn't completely thrilled with it. I'm still a complete Sweeney fan (before they killed it by making it a movie)
I listen to the soundtrack of this, but didn't care for it.

Sadly true-none of the characters have a real charm-especially its hero . And the strange happy ending is - strange .

I'm an ALW fan and I loved the musical. I love "She'd be far better off with you" in particular (as well as the usually sung songs.

This MUST be the WORST musical ever written, correction the most BORING! So much music and nothing happening.

I forgot to mention Company by Sondheim. Its another masterpiece, seek it out if you're not familiar. Well worth it!
