You still don't understand. i'll admit that it could be about the Reagen era, but Nasa wasn't decomisioned until Obama, and inequality didn't start under Reagen. I know as a a citizen who wasn't born under Clinton, who had to steal to feed his family, that this "inequality" wasn't created. The song is about selling drugs, forcing people into the same life that they were forced to live. The only way to get ahead is to force the addiction on others. Until you've really lived that way youWon'tGetIt
@VonPerouski You people... Patterson's mid 40's ,did you ever think maybe that's when he wrote it? ektrules has wtf he's trying to say there at the end. The establishments fucked and the poor get poorer, bottom line. It's a great song, I can't believe your trying to date and understand in some weird way what it's all about....
@jczother You people? Sorry for trying/hoping to apply a song to my current life and being really drunk when I do it, but I think the hallmark of a good song is that it does seem applicable to any time. Excuse me if I was that deeply moved by the band. And yes, understanding what the songs about is important to me. If thats not for you try listening to instrumentals
@VonPerouski Could be! That's when he wrote the m.f'r! NASA closed in Huntsville, I'm livin it and hear him scream and scream with him! Workin for the Walmart, what's ol Patterson mean, tell me.... Dip stick!
We haven't had the capability to put people on the Moon for almost 40 years and we probably won't again for another 40 years. That should stop being used as a scapegoat for everything.
... Okay. No doubt you thought that was clever. (Although, for serious, I do think your username is clever.)
Pretty sure I got the point (it wasn't overly subtle); I'm just tired of people using NASA as the go-to scapegoat for everything, particularly when that argument is no longer correct. We gave up 38 years ago and have thus lost the ability to put people on the Moon.
The point will send you christmas cards that offer ponies and trips. But the point will never pick you up for those trips and will never bring you that pony.
This song is obviously about the Reagan years. And I don't think people are using NASA as a scapegoat for anything. Maybe back then, but I wan't alive, so I don't know.
We still have the capability (we are much more capable actually), but there isn't really any point in sending people to the moon (or Mars). Sending robots is cheaper and easier.
@ektrules If you don't understand now you never will. The same reason people still climb Everest, because its there to be conquered. Also, this song isn't about the Reagen years. I don't know when this song was written, but its not about the president, its about the situation, which is prevelant in alot of poorer southern society. "I wish there was a better way of life" which is what everyone wants, but he's forced to sell drugs and put other people in his way of life. Living on the moon. tool
@VonPerouski Well, I understand the desire to send people to the moon, but I meant that there isn't any real benefit over sending robots right now. And I meant the song is set in the time that Reagan was in the white-house; not that it's about Reagan or the president in particular. I think the song is about inequality (which started growing rapidly under Reagan, and is probably why he was mentioned), resentment, and society ignoring the regular folk.
rarely does a song capture the state of affairs in such a clear, linear manner. i wonder how it came to be. i imagine it could go either way. 10 minutes of inspiration or an idea he couldn't let go of until he expressed it perfectly.
You must not be from the south if you dislike this song. Unfortunatly there is more truth in this one song than most of america has the balls to speak.
This REAL music you talk about? It's over played and predictable. This "gay" stuff? It ISN'T overplayed and it's ORIGINAL. Your stuff is the gay stuff.
love this song. thanks for letting me stream it online at work :) cool vid too...woulda liked a more 'explosive' ending at the end, i can understand that the budget isn't always there for something like that tho...excellent work
Wow i just heard this song for the first time maybe twenty minutes ago and have already listened to it three or four times. Its fucking amazing, and this video compliments it perfectly. Great job.
Really dig this video, having the guy walking around in different scenery is perfect for this video, because this song really seems like the personal thoughts of a man who has reached the end of his rope and is just wandering, letting all these emotions boil inside of him.
The video of DBT was really good - sound came out good as well. The other video clips don't really line up with the words - its just the same guy walking around (doesn't make sense). If you choose other shots that correlate to the words in some way it would be really cool. For example, when Patt says "Mary Alice in the ground" that would be a great time for a shot of an old cemetary or something. Other than that its cool though - great choice in song.
yeah for some reason the sound lags towards the end on youtube.com but for people who have embedded it in their site it syncs back up. you can also check it out at georgeburroughs.com
Worst song ever

I imagine you sitting in your living room, wondering when the point will get home from work.
but the point isn't at work. Nor did it really go our for smokes. It left, and you're going to miss it forever.

The point has come over for dinner, has married me, and is now having my children. They are twins (fraternal).

while i applaud you for playing along with my goodnatured ribbing, the point in my analogy is your missing father, so that's pretty messed up.

Drive by truckers are gay.
Listen to REAL music like Molly Hatchet and Skynrd!

no, i believe referencing ford fairlane in ones handle is gay. look into it.
DrivinDiscoDrivin 4 years ago 3
I'd also go so far as to state ffairlane's inability to properly spell Skynyrd indicates a general inability to appreciate good music.

William Gibson linked to this video. William Gibson. As in "Neuromancer." I'd be pretty happy ...
