You have forgotten an important clue to this project: The resistor! It is required if the new LED requires a different supply voltage than the stock LED.
It is bad idea, because it will not work with some mouses. I tried to change the LED in three mouses, and it didn't work with any mouse correct. I tried green, blue, yellow, and it didn't work. Only one mouse worked with the green LED. But it WASNT'T good. I agree with Jakemmx.
The detector they use is highly optimized for the mid 600 wavelengths. I am sure it will still work on most surfaces, but I bet the controller had to drop the wavelength.
