@dfar1988 Perhaps, but that still doesn't give them cause to forget the relevence it has to the composer and the turmoil that gave way to its genesis.
It is impressive that the musicians are able to keep up with him, but I feel expression and the original relevance of the work is lost when you take it out of context this way
Evgeny Svetlanov is a great conductor, he developed russian orchestral music in an energic and vivid sort of way, some of his performances are really a bit faster then some other conductors performances, for example, in Balakirev's Islamey, Svetlanov's performance is much faster than Igor Golovschin's performance.
i think that this movement was meant to be fast. the tempo indicates 'fast with fire' but if it is going to be played really fast, it must be perfectly articulated. this is difficult. if the players have a hard time making each note as clear and well pitched as possible, then it is necessary and appropriate to play a bit slower. but you have to admit, it does sound amazingly energetic when played with great speed.
Sweet Jesus, when will you ever breathe at such a speed? It's too fast. Fascinating, but too fast. It is like an athlete being chased by lions instead of running with other athletes.
A bit too fast, with insufficient time for some of the details to properly register. Yes, the orchestra is truly excellent, but this performance oversteps the mark. [It seems that some Russians aren't the best with their own repertoire.]
All in all, I have no choice but to dislike this performance...
Svetlanov really pushed sometimes. There's a live recording of Balakirev's Islamey from the 60s which is just completely electrifying.
Svetlanov was definitely one of those conductors who really took off in live performances. Pieces like the Rachmaninoff 2 and, if anybody has ever heard it, a live Scriabin Poem of Ecstasy from 1968 that is completely unmatched by anything I've ever heard, are just overwhelming in their impact.
Terrific! I guess it's a rather questionable approach, but I like as much as Rozhdestvensky's anyway. It's a remendously enjoyable, exhilarating performance.
ROFL! So true! I played this piece,1st violin, in community orchestra in 1986. Totally no reason to rush it the way he does. Totally ruins the finale. The music itself will provide the power. (Our orchestra had a great conductor. Great tempo. Playing this piece really is like dying and coming back.)
The Dallas Symphony took the piece about this fast in concert, but it wasn't too fast for the players, as portions here are. Also, the brass were louder, but with better tone.
I'm sorry but I agree. This is a dreadful performance. Valery Gergiev and Lenny Bernstein are also on here and they are certainly worth taking a look at as well as the Barenboim. The tempo is far to quick to articulate any detail in the score. Does he have a date after the concert?
I agree. I know I've already spoken (below) but this does such a disservice to the cause of Tchaikovsky. I've just discovered Rozhdestvensky on here doing the same movement but I lost it... it's worth a look if you're able to find it. I'm not clever enough. But not this!
awful conducting, seriously, what is he doing? Marking the beat with one hand and giving cues that arn't needed with the other? great performance, but he looks so boring.
Whoever the cymbal player is they know their stuff, thats seriously fast at the end, theres no way they missed that entry by accident unless they fell asleep, its such a famous part. My guess is they were asked to leave it out? Dunno why though. Also notice the final cymbal crash isnt actually in the part. Karajan asks for it, but plenty of others dont. I have to admit its a complete anticlimax without the final crash, but who knows?

good lord that is fast. I guess that's acceptable in the opening and closing, but in the slower sections I have to disagree, but to each his own.

Grande Svetlanov
In alcuni punti il tempo scelto, per quanto accattivante in altri punti, risulta un tantino veloce

It sounds ok....
Should be slower.
You loose a lot of musical things playing this fast, and you don't get the full sound you could get when playing at say a 140 tempo.

The guy conducts like he has a hot date waiting for him in the wings or he has diharea and needs to get off stage to take a dump.
This moron should not be permitted, by law, to conduct Tchaikovsky.

Actually there's no Bass Drum in the score at 6.25 but there should cymbals and triangle!

Svetlanov... perhaps not the most amiable figure, but a great conductor. In the '90s he performed a lot in The Hague.
