@iknewmikewell Modern kata are made for exercise, the earlier kata were made as a moving text of self defense techniques and movements, each to be executed separately with an opponent once the kata was learned. Modern kata have all been modified or watered down.
I think Shiina Sensei's Jitte is one of the better examples available on YouTube.
Jitte requires a heavier, more solid execution - the karateka should give the impression of being powerful and immoveable.
Your prejudice towards larger practitioners does you a disservice and once you can look past the bigotry of your opinion you'll see just why Shiina Sensei is so highly praised!
The beauty of karate is that it is for everyone, regardless of age, race and body type.
Nonsense!! I was trained by the JKA in Japan. Kata are about displaying bunkai. All of this nonsense about how a performance is graded is bunk. The bunkai of the technique is the only factor that dictates strength. You want to suck down that coolaide it is fine with me. However, your suppositions of who I am do you the disservice. Of course he is highly praised! By the JKA, they do that but they are NOT the keeper of karate and it is a stretch to say they even practice karate. A life member.
I'll take a look at Tanaka Sensei's execution and I'm sure he does it well. But I don't think Shiina Sensei did it bad here.IMHO this is a very good Jitte, as Jitte is a very specific Kata. It's not easy to perform it correctly. In this performance I don't see any serious flows. That is, if I have any rights at all to judge the performance of somebody who is a great master and superior to me in every possible way.
Strong kata from a great practitioner, the man has a fantastic attitude as well.

He looks very good for a thick man. Different shaped people do it differently , it is as simple as that.
Ronin6575 1 year ago
@Ronin6575 - Is he thick? I suspect you mean 'heavy set' or perhaps 'carrying a few extra kilos' rather than he's not too bright.

@BelloBudo007 I was thinking thick muscles or heavy, bulky, well-muscled....hard to tell now a year after I posted that comment.

Well done...
Shiina Sensei express the solid stance of this kata and his speed and technique is good.

Very heavy feet, lots of stomping. Bad on the knees over time and unnecessary to perform the kata. However, for a big guy, not bad.

...he should stick to kumite. The fact that he won 3rd exemplifies the role of politics in karate.

The goal in karate is not to win, but to surpass yourself.

Which decade of your training gave you that insight? A 21 year old can not possibly have that much insight no matter how long he has trained.

is there any vids on kou shan kou

If you mean Kusanku, you'll find several videos on youtube if you use that spelling. It's an Isshinryu kata and similar to Shotokan's Kanku Dai kata.
