What an elegant solution. Though I'm sure it won't be the only solution...I want to see an image that takes advantage of BOTH gradient meshes and diffusion curves.

Wow.. yeah, gradient meshes are cumbersome, this is what we needed.
I noticed color bleeding on the eyebrow at 1:58 though, hopefully it was an artist's error and not a fundamental limitation of the technique.
